FriendlyPanels Releases FMC's Pack One

Daniel López from FriendlyPanels has wrote in to announce the release of FMC’s Pack One for Flight Simulator 9 and X. This FMC pack contains seven FMC gauges, all of them working in a very similar way imitating the look of a Boeing or Airbus FMC. Four of them are intended to be used with B737-400, B777-300, B747-400 and A321 aircraft. The other four gauges are general purpose FMC gauges and they don't contain specific aircraft data pages so that they may be used with any aircraft. The purpose of these gauges is to implement the FMC style you can find in many of modern jetliners or business jets, using the flight plans created with Microsoft Flight Simulator FS9 or FSX, or any add-on which can export flight plans in the FS format. We have eliminated the complex way in which you have to plan your flight in current commercial FMC’s implemented in some of the aircraft existing for Microsoft Flight Simulator, but keeping the feeling of a real FMC-CDU. They are general purpose FMC and, in fact they can be used with ANY aircraft, though its normal use will be airliners or business jets - even a little Cessna 172 will follow the programmed VNAV in the same way that an Airbus 380 does, with the normal limitations due to differences between both types of aircraft. Space Shuttle Mission 2007™ new mission in the works – STS-122

Exciting Simulations™ is proud to announce that work has started on the first add-on to the Space Shuttle Mission 2007™. The add-on will add the Space Shuttle STS-122 mission – which has begun on February 7 with the launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis and ended on February 20 with a perfect landing at the Kennedy Space Center. The goal of STS-122 was to expand the scientific capabilities of the International Space Station. This has been achieved by delivering the new module Columbus. Also Astronaut Daniel Tani who has been on the ISS since STS-120, returned home on the Atlantis, while being replaced by the European Space Agency Astronaut Léopold Eyharts. The STS-122 mission add-on will be FREE and will include all the operations performed by the Astronauts in the real mission, from liftoff, on orbit, docking with the ISS, performing EVA, deploying the

Hawker Hunter from AlphaSim

Staff reviewer Laurence Aston climbs into the cockpit of AlphaSim's Hawker Hunter and puts it through its paces. "If there was ever an aircraft that displays a timeless shape and excellent aerodynamics, then the Hawker Hunter has to be the one."

"In the usual 2D display or Virtual Cockpit (VC) mode, all the instruments look good and are easily visible. Pop up displays for electrics and radios etc. are installed neatly, and looking out of the working environment forward, left and right gives good views with the high seat back restricting rearward views just as it would in a real Hunter. The panel is typical of a 1950’s design. A standard flight instrument layout with all the extras required for single pilot operation. On either side of the cockpit, below the coaming, all the expected controls and switches are readily at hand. In “VC” mode, they are functional for the basic applications, like gear selection, flaps, air brake and throttle etc."

"I have to say that the aircraft handles just as Sir Sydney Camm’s design intended, right through the flight envelope. From testing the brakes on taxi-out to applying full thrust at 50,000 feet plus, it is all there, and flies like the thoroughbred that the Hunter is. Even the speed brake functions correctly. Which means that with the gear up, the brake will extend below the lower fuselage to slow the aircraft down. But as soon as the gear is lowered or the aircraft is sitting on the ground, the speed brake is accurately inhibited to prevent ground strike action taking place."

Putting the Hunter back in the hanger, Laurie comments, "The Hawker Hunter is to be thoroughly recommended. Although the cockpit function leaves little for one to do in flight but navigate, clock watch and keep a look out for conflicting traffic, the sheer design accuracy means that this aircraft is a must for any Hawker enthusiast."

AlphaSim Releases The Rutan 61 Long EZ

Indianapolis X from DreamScenery

Staff reviewer Etienne Martin looks at DreamScenery's Indianapolis X. "Indianapolis International Airport (KIND) opened in September 1931, and received its current name in 1975 after being called Weir-Cook airport in 1944. It now occupies some 7,700 acres located 8 miles south-west of downtown. According to the operator, the Indianapolis Airport Authority, KIND saw over 8 million passengers last year and 1.15 million tons of cargo."

"DreamScenery depicts the airport with the new midfield terminal still under construction (the facility is scheduled to open in October 2008). The scenery comes complete with cranes, unfinished buildings and structures, and even a picnic table under a tent. At first glance, everything around the airport points to a high amount of detail and many small objects that add to an immersive ambiance."

"DreamScenery adds an interesting twist to the rendering of ice in the virtual winter, using optional polygons in winter time. The effect is quite pleasing as it allows ice and snow to make it across the taxiways in irregular lines – much more realistic and a good idea. Moving towards downtown, we find that autogen fills the 8 miles between the airport and downtown and does a good job filling the gap. The quality of the 3D modeling is good to excellent."

Etienne's screenshot intensive review of Indianapolis X concludes with, "it provides a high fidelity rendition of the Indianapolis International Airport and adds many of the buildings and landmarks found in Indianapolis and vicinity. The package’s ability to tune details through its configuration utility will certainly help mitigate the frame rate hit that is sure to come. Seldom has so much detail made it into a scenery add-on at this scale."

Mooney 201 M20J for FSX

Carenado developed the Mooney 201 M20J using most of the new features FSX allows for external shadows on VC, dynamic shadows, normal mapping, specular mapping and bloom lights. This aircraft joins their fleet as probably the best aircraft created by the company in terms of the 3D model textures and effects on textures. Of course it has all the standard features from Carenado like full interactive VC, friendly frame rate, much attention on details (as always)…and of course lots of eyes candy. AVSIM Announces New FANCON Schedule

The Board of Directors of AVSIM has been reviewing the FANCON schedule with an eye toward the economy, the interest shown by vendors, and the likely turn out for our 2008 event. As a result of this review, the Board of Directors has unanimously voted to change the AVSIM FANCON from an annual event to a once every two year event. Therefore, the 2008 FANCON, which had been scheduled to take place in Orlando, Florida, is cancelled.

The AVSIM Board will now start work on the next FANCON, which will take place in the third quarter of 2009. Whether the 2009 event will take place in Orlando is yet to be determined. The Board will hold its 2008 board meeting in September as usual, and will hold a Saturday night “social” for those who wish to attend. This board meeting will take place in Washington D.C. as in the past. We will be posting more information on the social as we get closer to the event.

New Releases - German Airports 2 - Hannover X & Munster/Osnabruck X
Aerosoft has the FSX version of Hannover added to their download section of their website, as well as Munster. Good performance, superbly realistic and if you have the FS004 version you get the FSX version for free. That's a deal you can't afford to miss.

Updates - Lukla X Update 2.10 - Missions. The missions for LuklaX are now available. The first mission is a straight landing and departure (well no landing is easy at Lukla), the second a challenging mission to safe some climbers. Both missions can be flown with a default aircraft but are also available for our Twin Otter X.

- DHC-6 Twin Otter Update 1.10 - The Twin Otter got a 1.10 update today, it solves most bugs and adds many things that were requested by the users, such as a DME and Marker Beacon Lights. Obligatory update for all who love the Twotter.

Boeing 757 Professional from Just Flight

Staff reviewer Sngelique van Campen takes Just Flight's Boeing 757 Professional for a test run. Her indepth analysis and comparison of this wide body aircraft includes a test flight and numerous screenshots. "The Just Flight 757 Professional for FS2004 is, let’s say for 99.9%, the original PSS (Phoenix Simulation Software) version. The offered 757 comes in different models; the -200, -300 and -200F (Freighter) with two possible engine types, the Rolls Royce RB211 Series and the P&W (Pratt & Whitney) PW2000 Series. Additional to the basic software, you’ve got 66 liveries – including the Phoenix house colors – divided over the three different models."

"When FS9 is started and the JF/PSS 757 is loaded, we start with a great looking 2D panel. Apart from the main instrument panel – captain’s side – many other sub-panels are offered including two different EADIs (Electronic Attitude Direction Indicator). One without an electronic IAS (Indicated Air Speed) scale and Auto Flight mode settings at the bottom while the other EADI has an IAS scale on the left with a FMAS (Flight Mode Annunciations) on top of the display. Other sub-panels can be requested via the FS menu or directly from the JF/PSS “Panel Switch Command Bar”. Sub-panels include the overhead panel, pedestal, EADI, FMS CDU, radio stack, COM for primary communication frequencies, a DOOR panel and finally the Performance and Set-Up panel."

"Creating a VC is difficult. The VC gives me a good impression of the overall cockpit lay-out, the panels with printed text, the sharpness of the individual instruments, close-ups of the pedestal and overhead panel. On the other hand, certain parts in the cockpit look cartoonish like the control wheel steering horn, the back side of the pedestal and the lower part of the captain’s and co-pilot's seats. These are just a few small details, and for some those, are not that important but for others they are."

"I would like to advise you that once you’ve bought the JF 757 Professional, to read the tutorial not once but at least twice. It’s not difficult to read or understand, but during certain flight phases, you don’t have the time to read the book while flying either manually or via the Auto Pilot. Using the tutorial, you start learning how to handle all the systems. I can conclude that there’s not really a negative frame impact on the FPS. Thus resulting in good frame figures. So even for low end computers, it’s a nice airplane to fly."

After putting Just Flight's Boeing 757 back into the hangar, Angelique closes with, "JF/PSS offers a good product although certain parts could be lifted to a higher standard. I think it’s a good product since as far as I have seen and tested, the avionics offers what it should do, as well as its behavior. The JF development team is still working on this 757 Professional to make the necessary improvements and offer new service packs. I think it’s definite worth adding to your hangar."

FSFlyingSchool Version 1.9 Released

FSInventions announces a new version of its FSFlyingSchool add-on for FSX and FS2004. Version 1.9 introduces several new features which are free to existing customers and new users alike:

  • Tips of the Day; A randomly selected tip is now displayed when the user launches FSFlyingSchool. The tips can be examined one by one if the user prefers and this feature can be turned on or off as desired. The tips contain a wealth of information about how to get the most from FSFlyingSchool.

  • New Aircraft Supported; Support for several new aircraft has been added to FSFlyingSchool.

  • Link to Video Tutorials in FSFlyingSchool program; The Information Page now has a handy link direct to the FSFlyingSchool web site’s Tutorials Page so that the user can jump directly to a set of detailed narrated video tutorials on how to get the most from the FSFlyingSchool program.

  • Enhanced Non-English PC Support; Corrects problem experienced by some users with PCs not set to English language whereby the Career Analyser and Traditional Log Book would cause errors if displayed.

  • Altimeter Fix; A few users reported that the instructor repeatedly asked the pilot to reset the altimeter when this advice was incorrect – this no longer occurs.

    A Tribute To Sir Hilary

Walk and Follow allows the user to freely walk around the Flight Simulator environment and has the unique function of creating FSX Cameras, and saving these for future use.     Staff reviewer Etienne Martin reforms Europe and Asia with Scenery Tech's Landclass software. "Scenery Tech’s Europe and Asia Landclass products provide accurate terrain mapping data for large areas of the world."

    "The Scenery Tech landclass visibly increases both the variety and resolution of the terrain type across the areas covered. The effect is drastic in areas of the world neglected by FSX where pervasive desert textures make the visuals rather bland and uninteresting. I also found the Scenery Tech data refines the transitions by utilizing more classes on the Olson scale, in particular for population areas. This makes urban areas from small villages to large cities magically appear in the terrain, while providing a gradual transition from rural to urban types. The new textures and texture map file impacts mountains and rocky areas significantly. It adds “more rock” to mountains, and second, it eliminates some of the zigzag effects on sloped surfaces."

    "Because the additional landclass data must be loaded and processed, one can expect an additional burden on the scenery engine, primarily in load times. This said, I did not notice any frame rate impact on my system outside of a slightly increased load time. It should be noted that landclass data increases the variety of textures loaded, which increases the number of textures cached in memory for a given region."

    This screenshot intense review of Scenery Tech's Europe & Asia Landclass is one that has to be seen more than read. "In the narrow confine of terrain classification, Scenery Tech’s landclass does the job well and fills major gaps in the default landclass data. For these reasons, Scenery Tech’s landclass deserves a good look if you’re looking at improving scenery in FSX."
