NuukX Scenery For FSX Released

Posted: Friday, October 1, 2010 - 12:42
NuukX scenery package is the most real mesh for Flight Simulator X for the Nuuk area. This area covers more than 6,734 Sq. miles. The mesh data is made from ASTER GDEM data. While ASTER GDEM data is not nearly refined as STRM source data, the data is the best data for Greenland. The raw ASTER GDEM data is not without its problems, but they have remade large areas to make it usefull. But it's not only the mesh they have reworked. The coastline and islands are reworked for this release. Beside this scenery you can download the satellite imagery for the ground texture. This is optional, and the scenery will work without it. But it will give you a more realistic ground texture. You can find the files at FlightSim Greenland.

Posted: Thursday, September 30, 2010 - 12:52
PRE-Flight RC Simulator is pleased to announce the release of their Messerschmitt Bf 109 for free download. The Me 109 was a German WWII fighter - designed by Willy Messerschmitt and formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe fighter force. The 109 was extremely well designed as evidenced by the fact that it was the most produced airplane of the war and the most manufactured fighter in history with over 33,000 produced. The 109's light weight and powerful engine combined with its lethal weaponry helped credit it with more kills than any other aircraft in history and enabled over 2,500 German pilots to gain the coveted "ace" title.

Singapore from ImagineSim

Posted: Wednesday, September 29, 2010 - 4:34
Staff reviewer Gary Yip travels to a well known Asian destination with ImagineSim's Singapore airport. "Lying well in the middle of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) Singapore also gets a lot of weather phenomenon designed to put pilots to the ultimate test. Tropical thunderstorms are commonplace in Singapore and CB clouds are the only type of cloud you are likely to see. Typhoons can mean that wind speeds can blow you way off course and make things interesting as well as adding some heavy rain to the mix just to make sure that you sweat during your approach!"

"Terminal 1 is home to many international airlines such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Emirates. The H shape is designed to maximize gate space so as a result, the small area has enough capacity for 29 aerobridge gates as well as an additional 16 remote stands. Terminal 2 is the main base for Singapore Airlines and is the most recently upgraded out of the 3 main terminals. A380 flights to take advantage of the 8 new A380 gates in Terminal 3, in addition to the 11 A380 capable gates in Terminals 1 and 2."

"The docking system at an airport is one of the most important aspects of flying. ImagineSim has created a very easy to use parking guidance system that will accurately and precisely guide you onto the line. The airport upgrade does not come with any form of moving jetway. Instead, what the developers have done is let all the hard work be done by Aerosoft’s AES program for FS."

"The scenery as you’d expect from ImagineSim is of very high quality and designed to make your simming more fluid with good performance. This Singapore add-on is true to its word and with my dated system, flying complex aircraft such as the PMDG 747-400 aircraft, I gained a not perfect but perfectly useable 20fps in the virtual cockpit. Overall, the impressive credentials that ImagineSim have are testament to their products and this latest release will not let you down. It provides accurate and spectacular scenery to add to an otherwise desolate and bare default airport and in such a beautiful country such as Singapore. "

Battle of Britain: 70th Anniversary

Posted: Monday, September 27, 2010 - 5:33
In commemoration of this week's anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Senior Staff Reviewer David Wilson-Okamura looks at Just Flight's presentation of the aircraft that fought during this famous air battle. "This product, developed by Aeroplane Heaven and published by Just Flight, commemorates the planes of the Battle through a series of models for Flight Simulator X. Several types were involved, including Heinkel He-111 bombers and Junkers Ju-87 Stukas, but the objective of the battle was air superiority over southern England, as a prerequisite for seaborne invasion. This meant destroying the enemy’s fighters, and fighters (accordingly) are what this package is about: specifically, the early versions of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk. I, the Hawker Hurricane, and the Messerschmitt Me-109E (“Emil”)."

"For the external model, the Just Flight Spitfire has twelve liveries and three separate models, representing the prototype, the early Mk. I (with two-bladed wooden propeller) and the Mk. IA (with bubble canopy and three-bladed, metal propeller). Unlike the Hurricane and Spitfire, which come in three versions each, the Me-109E only comes in one version, but ships with more liveries: seventeen, including a Soviet scheme (from the period when Germany and Russia were allies), French colors (for a 109 that the Allies captured during the Battle of France), and a Japanese livery (flown by the test pilots of Kawasaki)."

"The Spitfire and the Hurricane in this package both have 3D gauges. So far, no one has produced 3D gauges for the Me-109. For clarity and sharpness, Just Flight is the winner. The 3D gauges help, but in general the textures are sharper too, and it’s easier to read the labels on the instrument panel."

"On my rig, the Just Flight models took a little bit longer to load their textures, but I would put them all in the category of frame rate friendly."

"The download version of Battle of Britain: 70th Annivsary, if you buy all three models, is 40 pounds, 50 euros, or 60 US dollars. If you want to buy the planes individually, the price is 20 pounds, 25 euros, or 30 US dollars for each fighter (or series of fighters, for the Hurricane and Spitfire). If you want to get a series of planes, including prototypes, then Just Flight has what you need."

Radar Box Pro from AirNav Systems

Posted: Sunday, September 26, 2010 - 18:09
Staff reviewer Marlon Carter takes a look at the real world of commercial aviation with AirNav Systems' Radar Box Pro. "AirNav RadarBox is the world's best selling and most advanced Real Time Virtual Radar. Designed by Professional Pilots and the first and only ADS-B receiver with a presence in space."

"Flight number, aircraft type, altitude, heading, speed are all updated each second. Two of the features I enjoyed with this program is the networking capabilities which is described as revolutionary since it is one of the first worldwide flight radar flight data. This feature allows you to access data from other Radarbox users around the world. Another feature of the product that I enjoyed was the alert function that alerts you whenever aircraft come within your radar range."

"RadarBox is not only a useful tool to pilots but also to those of you who are interesting in air traffic control and even if you are neither of the two, I can guarantee that if you love aviation you will enjoy having this product. This is the closest you can get to real world aviation without leaving your living room. It allows you to monitor the movement of aircraft not only at your home location but also worldwide."
