Latin VFR releases Sucre Bolivia SLSU

Posted: Saturday, February 27, 2010 - 16:55
Sucre is the capital city of Bolivia. Though many people would confuse it with La Paz (which is the administrative seat) Sucre is the capital city of this South American nation. The only airport in this city is "Juana Azurduy De Padilla" Airport SLSU (SRE). And it has on average 2 daily flights within Bolivia servicing this city. The airport is considered by most one of the most challenging and difficult of Bolivia and also among South American airports.

Ever wanted to fly your airliner (737/A320) into a sloped runway airport such as Lukla or Courchevel? You know you can't because the runway is not apt, but Sucre airport's runway which is significantly sloped because of its location in mountain ridges is a 9000+ feet runway, but because the field's high elevation of more than 3000+ meters above sea level coupled with the sloping runway it's quite a challenge to both arrive and depart from this airport.

For landing, usually on runway 05, its quite a challenge because once you touchdown the runway starts a downward slope and the pilot would think he's going to run out of runway and fall into the abyss at the end. For departure, which is only in one direction, full power is to be applied in order to avoid a hill that is ahead and caution on rotation is to be exercised in order to prevent a tail strike.

This allows AirView to be used for instructor/student training and monitoring, connection to large screen displays or to have multiple instances of AirView running concurrently. AirView Remote works with both FSX and X-Plane and is free for registered users. A free trial version is also available.

Bretagne and Brest from France VFR

Posted: Friday, February 26, 2010 - 2:07
Senior staff reviewer Angelique van Campen heads to the northwest of France to look at France VFR's Bretagne and Brest scenery titles. "Since I’ve included the airport and surrounding Brest area - which makes sense because it lies within Bretagne VFR - the differences between FSX and FS9 Brest software aren’t that big within Bretagne VFR except for the LOD outside/inside the airport fences. Still I’ve split up the review into two parts and where and when needed, I’ll be referring to each of them."

"You can see for yourself it’s very difficult to pinpoint default FS9 Brittany locations versus the real Brittany if you’ve chosen the France VFR software. What I like about the France VFR software is that you can use it in combination with VFR charts or if you wish, just an ordinary Michelin car route chart."

Angelique takes us on a descriptive tour of these titles by conducting VFR cross country flights fromm Rennes to Brest. There she looks at the Brest airport. Then she flies another route, Rennes - St Malo - Brest, to cover more of the title's scenery.

"Is Bretagne FSX better than its FS9 counterpart? The answer is yes, but that’s not strange due to the LOD difference. Remember, FS9 is based on a LOD10 (38.2 meters), while the FSX version is LOD13 (4.75 meters). The Brest airport scenery is more or less the same for FS9 and FSX. Probably there are some small differences but honestly, I haven’t noticed them. One thing is for sure; the amount of FS9 ground vehicles/airport ground equipment is more present than in FSX. However, FSX allows the adding of default ground stuff via the menus. My overall impression of these titles are that they are very good with some slight discrepancies."

Citation X from Eaglesoft

Posted: Wednesday, February 24, 2010 - 1:52
Senior staff reviewer Bert Pieke and staff reviewer Marlon Carter team up to fly Eaglesoft's Citation X. The result,a Gold Star Award. The Cessna Citation X is a long range, medium size business jet aircraft. The X is the fastest operative civilian jet with a top speed of Mach 0.92, making it the fastest business jet in history."

"Eaglesoft did a fantastic job in modeling this aircraft. From almost every angle there are very few if any inaccuracies and even though it looks close to version 1.0, the CX2.0 is a total rebuild of the Citation X. The model comes with many new features, including winglets which can be added without having to load a totally new aircraft from the aircraft menu. The Eaglesoft Citation X 2.0 also has an animated Pilot, First Officer and Female VIP passenger, along with engine and pitot tube covers and a host of other “hidden” features in the interior cabin. First impression upon loading the Citation X is that it truly looks like the real thing, inside and out."

"The FMS setup is a no compromise situation, you have to set up the FMS by the book or you WILL run into problems. Flying the Citation X was a joy. It’s not often you find a complex aircraft with so many features and flying characteristics that are so accurate and unique. The biggest surprise to me, is how easy this airplane is to fly by hand. It is very well behaved, and once you get past the overwhelming level of information provided via the PFD and MFD screens and just look out the window, you can make a perfect landing every time."

"I can honestly say is that the Citation X has been the best aircraft I have flown for the FS platform all year (2009). The Citation X 2.0 sets a standard that other developers may have a hard time catching up to. I found the Eaglesoft Citation X V2 to be a well crafted package with a lot of content. In my books, The Eaglesoft Citation X V2 is a winner."

Sion X from Aerosoft

Posted: Sunday, February 21, 2010 - 21:23
Staff reviewer Rick Desjardins heads to Switzerland to check out Aerosoft's Sion X. "Sion can be found in the Rhône valley in the Swiss Alps. Surrounded by picturesque mountains this is a very beautiful area. The airport currently operates two runways; a 2000 meter concrete runway that was upgraded with ILS capability in 1991 and a second 600 meter grass runway. In 2007 there were over 44000 combined aircraft movements making this small airfield a busy place."

"The first thing that jumps out at you is that you're in a valley surrounded by the Swiss Alps. Panning around, you begin to notice that there are lots of little touches that bring the airport to life. Looking to the west there is a line of cargo hangers, once again you have items such as boxes and crates and a variety of airport vehicles, some of which are animated. It was not uncommon to see a fuel truck driving around the airport."

"On the south side of the main runway is the military portion of Sion airport. Just as with the civilian side you will find a variety of static objects but this time, as you would expect, they are military in nature. There are some static military vehicles, personnel and aircraft. Beyond the borders of the airport you'll come across some extra objects included to spruce up the area."

"Flying in and out of this airport can prove to be a challenge depending on the aircraft type you choose. As is recommended, I normally approached the airport from the east. Doing so provides certain advantages, the ILS is active on runway 25 which includes approach lights and the valley is much longer and wider from this direction making it easier than a westerly approach. Most of my departures were also to the east as the initial climb is not as steep."

"There are lots of little extras in and around Sion X that give you the feeling that the airport is alive and not just a deserted concrete strip. The scenery is not without its faults but overall it's nicely done."
