Aerosoft Releases Tronheim-Vaernes X

Posted: Friday, January 29, 2010 - 1:07
It's been a while since new Scandianvian airports were released, but Aerosoft has a very nice one for you. Trondheim-Vaernes X is a scenery of the third largest Norwegian airport. The single runway stretches into the fjord and weather conditions can make this a very difficult airport to use. Though detail is great all over the airport it is relatively friendly on framerates, something you will appreciate as you come in on a dark evening with some crosswind and some snow. There are full seasonal textures and of course it is AES compatible (but not before Aerosoft releases the next version of AES). Check out the great screenshots and details at the website.

A second GXM can now be connected to the secondary output of a supported dual monitor graphics card so two DualHead2Go GXMs can power up to four outputs in 2x2 or 4x1 modes, while two TripleHead2Go units can be combined to connect six displays to produce either a 3x2 or 6x1 set up. This will bring flight sim to a whole new level.

ERJ Ver.2 from feelThere

Posted: Wednesday, January 27, 2010 - 1:41
Staff reviewer Marlon Carter looks at the Embraer Regional Jets Version 2 as presented by feelThere. "The Embraer RJ family has become quite common place within regional travel. The introduction of Version 2 of the ERJ family comes as a result of many dedicated users requesting a more up to date simulation of the ERJ."

"feelThere has done a marvelous job on recreating the ERJ family. The models are very detailed and from every angle you can find something to appreciate in the time and hard work that has been put into these models. The textures produced by Mcphatstudios are second to none when it comes to high definition aircraft textures. The high quality repaints that come along with this package takes the ERJ family to another level of quality that is rarely seen."

"After comparing pictures of the ERJ V1 cockpit panel and the ERJ V2, it’s clear to see that even the panel and VC have received a makeover. The textures are very high quality and they almost give a new but slightly “weathered” look to the 2D cockpit. The virtual cockpit is also very detailed, from navigation charts to soda cans, it seems like nothing has been missed. feelThere has provided a high quality virtual cabin with textures created by Mcphatstudios. These textures are very detailed and almost transport you from your living room into the real aircraft."

"My overall summary relates to all versions provided in this package and from the very start I was quite impressed by the dynamics of the aircraft on the ground. Turns are smooth and braking action is spot on. The takeoff felt very natural and for the first time I felt like I actually had a heavy piece of machinery in the palm of my hands. Whether you are using the autopilot or hand flying, turning the aircraft and initiating climbs and descents are very smooth and allows the pilot or autopilot to be in full control of the aircraft at all times. With landing gear down and full flaps applied, the aircraft takes on a new feel as you can really sense the added drag on your flight yoke or joystick. Landing the ERJ was a dream, if you have ever seen or experienced a landing on a real ERJ; users will be quite pleased at how realistic the handling on landing and deceleration really is. I think feelThere did a good job in fine tuning the dynamics of these aircraft."

"I have never had the chance to fly onboard an ERJ but if I did, I imagine that the experiences would be equal to what the ERJ V2 provides. The package itself is quite a bargain; you not only get the ERJ135, 145 and 145XR, but also a high quality sound package, HD aircraft textures from Mcphatstudios and CALL! This is a great aircraft, well built and a lot of hard work has gone into creating what may now be one of the best regional jets for FS9 and FSX."

TCAS from DBS Studios

Posted: Sunday, January 24, 2010 - 23:53
Senior staff reviewer Angelique van Campen makes modification to various aircraft panels with the addition of DBS Studio's TCAS (Traffic Alert / Collision Avoidance System). "These systems are referred to as TCAS II (Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System) in the United states and ACAS II (Airborne Collision Avoidance System) internationally."

Angelique guides you through the installation and adaptation of this instrument in various default and add-on aircraft. Specifically she looks at the installation of this utility in the Cessna 172 SP Skyhawk, The Mooney Bravo with default instrumentation and the Glass Cockpit version, the CRJ700, Capt Sim's 757, the Level-D 767, Wilco's Airbus Vol 2, and the ERJ 135.

"Although the DBS TCAS instruments are slightly different from each other depending in which airplane they are fitted or should I say which gauge file is requested, the general idea of this add-on software is to warn you about other traffic and if needed, helping you with what to do."

"Looking at this add-on software I must say, when you’re flying mainly with default FS9/FSX airplanes, it’s worth buying it. However, when you only fly add-on planes that are equipped with an integrated TCAS functionality, then there’s no reason for buying this add-on in my opinion. Overall impression: not bad at all and keeping the price in mind and what it’s intended for, I think it’s a useful add-on package."

Ostafyevo from AlfaFly

Posted: Saturday, January 23, 2010 - 18:39
Staff reviewer Xavier Noche heads to Russia to review AlfaFly's Ostafyevo. "Oddly, this airport does not exist at all in FSX; it is just regular landscape and trees. This airport opened in 2000 on a former military air base near Moscow, Russia. The Ostafyevo airport is located South from Moscow, exactly midway between Vnukovo and Domodedovo, and has a single 6600 ft long concrete runway 08-26. It is mostly dedicated to general aviation."

"The scenery includes the airfield with all the buildings and parking lots with busses, cars, animated people in various places. The surrounding areas add real buildings, the real lakes and ponds, the approach lights structures, the roads with car and truck traffic, local trees like fir trees and birch trees, and much more. Lots of areas in the field are what we could call “sub-sceneries” of their own with custom details such as specific 1940’s cars. There are civil works scenes, and military storage of various vehicles."

"Ostafyevo proves to be amazingly detailed, in all areas, providing new things to discover each time you fly or taxi in the area for quite some time."

FW190A:The Late Variants from Classics Hangar

Posted: Friday, January 22, 2010 - 0:58
Senior staff reviewer David Wilson-Okamura continues the other half of the Classics Hangar series of the FW190A: the Late Variants. "The latest product from Classics Hangar is “Focke Wulf Fw 190 A: The Late Variants.” Using ten models, it tells the rest of “Anton’s” story, from the A-5, which debuted in 1942 (when the defeat of Germany was still uncertain), to the A-8 and the A-9, both of which were still being manufactured during the last week of the war in Europe."

"Each of the ten models in this package comes with its own virtual cockpit (VC). Most variations are minor but all of the models have an artificial horizon gauge (something that Allied planes got earlier) and the very latest Antons include a vertical speed indicator (something, again, which today we take for granted but which most German fighters did not get until late in the war). Also new to the Late Variants are nav radios and the AFN-2 radio beacon indicator."

"The flight model for this aircraft, even though it was calculated on the basis of the aircraft’s weight and dimensions, feels as rich, responsive, and ‘analogue’ as any I have owned. One improvement in the Late variants is that prop speeds are now governed by a custom gauge, which responds proportionally to input from the throttle. Engine modeling for this product is on par with the Acceleration P-51 Mustang or the RealAir Spitfire: you can burn up the engine if you push it too hard, but the state of your engine -- its health or lack of same -- is not preserved from flight to flight (as it is, for example, with A2A’s Accu-Sim products)."

"This is one of the best-looking models in my hangar, and also one of the best-performing, with frame rates on par with the default planes and the RealAir single-engines. I have a few products that I use as reference standards. Occasionally, a new product is so good that it becomes a reference standard in its own right. That doesn’t happen very often, but this is one of those times, and one of those products."
