LGMK Scenery Now Available Free Posted: Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 12:47 AVSIM partner HSP, the freeware scenery design team from Greece, just released a new airport scenery. This time it's FS2004 Mikonos LGMK airport, serving one of the country's most beautiful and cosmopolitan islands in the Aegean sea. The airport requires stick & rudder abilities from any jet pilot that will visit it. It's a short and narrow runway, hit by gusty sea winds most of the time, on terrain rising 405ft right up from the sandy beaces below and also with rocky terrain rising further in the immediate vicinity. Airport photorealistic scenery was produced by on the spot pictures as well as detailed satellite imagery. All objects are carefully added so as not to reduce frame rates. HSP also recently released an update to Kos LGKO airport. You can preview the scenery and download the files from the project's website and also view some pictures of the (real) airport, as well as Mikonos' island beauty, at this photo album. HSP's Mesh terrain and "Base" scenery are highly recommended although not cumpolsory for individual airport sceneries like Mikonos to display properly.

AlphaSim Gloster Javelin Mk.9 Released Posted: Saturday, September 23, 2006 - 18:22 The legendary Javelin is now available as a state-of-the-art flightsim package from AlphaSim. The Mk.9 variant is depicted in four configurations; two camouflage versions with Firestreak missiles and aux tank options, an all-silver 'clean' version and finally the red & white trials aircraft used at Boscombe Down in the 1970's. All models have a high-detail and high-FPS virtual cockpit with a great many mousable parts. The 2D panel blends with the v-c perfectly and is equipped with several useful pop-up sub-panels.
The flight model was carefuly researched and the Javelin's strengths (and shortcomings) have been faithfully replicated. The manually-switched reheat effects provide added boost at higher Mach numbers and a thunderous soundset rounds out this rendition of the famous Cold War interceptor. For FS2004/FSX only. Filesize 39.56MB. Screenshots can be viewed at the AlphaSim Website.

R. Harvey Scholarship Update Posted: Saturday, September 23, 2006 - 14:30 In February, 2002, AVSIM established the Richard Harvey Endowed Scholarship at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. This scholarship was created to memorialize Richard, who was the lead programmer and advocate of the FLY! flight simulator series. Its purpose is to finacially aid a deserving student who seeks a career in aviation. The scholarship is awarded to one ERAU student each fall and is now endowed; that is, it is self perpetuating. We are pleased to provide you a report on the status of the scholarship. As of June 30th, 2006, the scholarship has $15,600.14 in its account. This school year, rather than the $500 scholarships previously provided, the scholarship award will be $900.00. Last year's recipient was Adil Samhaoui, Aeronautical Science major, Daytona Beach Campus, from Webster, NY. We are very proud of the community and its donations to this worthy cause in memory of one of the finest individuals to ever participate in our hobby. We are also very appreciative to the companies in our hobby who have also contributed to making a future pilot's dream come true. If you would like to contribute to the Richard Harvey Scholarship, you can do so here.
Adam Szofran Posts On "Blurries" Posted: Friday, September 22, 2006 - 22:48 Adam Szofran, a Microsoft ACES team member, and well known community member (and a member of the AVSIM Hall of Fame), has today posted a detailed exploration of the commonly referred to issue of the "blurries". Adam starts his post off by saying; "There has been much concern about the display of lower-than-normal resolution textures on the terrain in Flight Simulator, a condition often called "the blurries". I am a software engineer on the ACES team at Microsoft and my primary area of responsibility is the terrain engine, so I'd like to give my take on the "the blurries." The views expressed in this posting are my own and don't necessarily reflect those of Microsoft." You can continue reading Adam's post and joining in the discussion here.
