New Review Staff Needed

Posted: Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 1:47
Our supply of products to review is starting to outnumber our reviewers, so it's time to hit the recruiting trail again. If you've enjoyed reading the reviews submitted by our staff and feel that you can provide the same indepth coverage of flight sim software, hardware and utilities, then I'd like to hear from you.

I'm not looking for people who can write about a nice airplane that flies well and I really like it (yes, I have had these type of reviews submitted), but flight sim enthusiasts who want to pass on their genuine opinion of products that their fellow simmers should know about, whether it be to praise it or to advise giving it a wide berth.

Oh and the benefits....no pay, lots of flying and hours at the keyboard. What's in it for you? The products are yours to keep as a way for the vendors to say thanks for looking at their product and from AVSIM, for taking the time to be part of the #1 fan-based flight sim website. Plus we'll put you to work at the annual Conference should you decide to attend. It's all about the networking. You've heard the names from such developers as Flight 1, Just Flight, Aerosoft, AlphaSim and some company called Microsoft...now you can meet those people. Plus hardware developers like CH Products, Saitek, Hotseat, Matrox and Sim Cockpit Systems.

"So now what do I have to do?" Just send the Reviews Editor a review sample of something in your inventory in a style similar to what you have seen on the AVSIM site, plus a quick blurb about your simming experience. Reviewers to emulate?, take a look at the reviews of Angelique van Campen, Zane Gard, Gene Davis, Laurence Aston, Robert Mariani and Etienne Martin. I can't list all of our reviewers, but you can see who they are on our front page. I ask that you be able to produce a review every 4-6 weeks and yes, I take into account that you are a volunteer and real life takes priority. If you're going to fly the aircraft, the scenery or use the utility to their fullest, why not write about them at the same time and get something you might not purchase right away. Something that you might wait to read about at AVSIM first? That's what many of our readers do...they wait for the honest product opinions from the AVSIM review team. Be part of that team.

Just Flight Releases A Swarm Of Mosquitos

Posted: Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - 1:26
The Mosquito Base Pack package includes three classic variants - the B. Mk IV, the FB. Mk VI and also the FB Mk XVIII Tsetse.

The Mk IV led the famous attack on the Gestapo HQ in Oslo, Norway in September '42. The Mk VI was involved in the famous Amiens Prison Raid. The "Tsetse" is a ground attack and anti-shipping fighter-bomber developed from the Mk VI.

The Mosquito Special Ops Upgrade Pack includes 4 models types and four new liveries plus ads 2 new liveries to the Base Pack. The B Mk IV model has a "buldging" bomb bay which enabled it to carry a 4,000 lb bomb. The BOAC high speed courier model was adapted to carry one passengler in an extemely compact compartment in the bomb bay during its high speed envoy missions. The Mk IV "Highball" model was a one-off conversion for testing the Barnes Wallis spinning bomg of "Dambusters" fame. This pack also includes the Mk XVI model.

The Mosquito Photo-Recon and Radar Upgrade Pack includes another 4 models and liveries plus 2 new liveries for the base pack and a new model for the Special Ops Pack. These models include variants of the Mk IV airframe.

Mosquito is fully licensed by the Royal Air Force and has been developed to the very highest standards by the vintage aircraft experts at Aeroplane Heaven as a lasting tribute to this amazing aircraft. Check out these wooden wonders at the Just Flight website.

KATL from ImagineSim

Posted: Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 18:13
Staff reviewer Jeremy Fletcher visits one of the wrold's busiest airports, KATL, Atlanta International Airport from ImagineSim. "This airport has five parallel runways heading east and west; two north of the gates, two south of the gates, and one all by itself on the south side of the airport."

"The south cargo area of the airport is made up of a lot of hangars and miscellaneous buildings, all of which are textured to appear weathered, and most of which have some form of company logos or other identification. There are some static and AI aircraft that frequent this area, as well as a number of static and dynamic ground vehicles. If you like flying cargo aircraft you will feel welcomed to the north area of this airport. UPS and FedEx hubs have taken over the eastern portion of the north cargo ramps. Both areas contain a host of ground support equipment, static and AI aircraft, and plenty of static and dynamic ground vehicles."

"In the center of the airport is where you will find the terminal, tower, and all of the passenger gates. The gates come complete with jetways, Delta parking systems, and more ground support equipment. The Delta parking system is a handy traffic light type of system that will help you to position your aircraft properly for correct jetway docking."

"ImagineSim has modified all pavement textures to resemble well used, yet sufficiently maintained taxiways, runways and ramps. Each runway now has much more authentic looking identifiers, markings, and touchdown marks. All pavement has indications of cracks here and there, some natural weathering and discoloration, and all markings are moderately worn."

"I have very few complaints about KATL from the folks at ImagineSim. I give this product my thumbs up, and am grateful that ImagineSim has kept those of us still using FS9 in mind."

Austria X from Aerosoft/Flugwerk Design

Posted: Friday, July 18, 2008 - 1:51
Senior staff reviewer Gene Davis visits a country on his wish list with Flugwerk Design's Austria X Professional available at Aerosoft. "What Austria X does for Flight Simulator X is quite remarkable, as it adds the entire road network, custom buildings and objects, landclass, photo type scenery for several cities and accurate terrain mesh data for the entire country. Thus giving the Flight Sim user an all-out true to life representation of Austria in FSX."

"All of the buildings in Austria Professional, aside from the autogen, are native to that country, and if you are flying in places like Vienna, you will see accurate landmarks and commercial buildings plucked right out of that part of the world.Included in this package are four of Austria’s biggest cities; Vienna, Linz, Salzburg and Graz. Each have been designed from the ground up using aerial photographs for proper placement of all of the buildings, landmarks and bridges, along with a photo-real overlay that blends in well with the surrounding terrain textures."

"The roads, rivers and landclass is where the heart and soul of this product comes in to play as it covers the entire country no matter where you fly. If you are flying VFR, as this product is intended, then you should be able to find your way via geographical references with little or no instrumentation. The terrain mesh that is included with this package really enhances the look and feel of the surrounding mountain ranges, especially in areas like Salzburg! Salzburg is inherently mountainous, and you don’t have to go far to find that mountainous terrain and the valleys to fly into."

"Austria X Professional is a beautiful product and it adds a lot to that particular region of the world," says Gene, "the box calls it an “accurate visual model” of the places in question and I really do think they deliver on that statement. You are getting roads, landclass, terrain mesh, custom objects and buildings, and photo real scenery for four different cities all in one nice little package; and if that was not enough, the product covers the entire country instead of just a portion of it."

MAAM's TBF/TBM Avenger Reviewed

Posted: Tuesday, July 15, 2008 - 5:02
Contributing reviewer Chris Kiehl looks at MAAM's latest release, the TBM/TBF Avenger. "Leroy Grumman designed the XTBF-1, or what was to become the TBF Avenger, and the heaviest single engine aircraft of World War II. The Avenger has several unique design features including the rear facing dorsal and ventral turrets, a large torpedo bay, and a three man crew."

"The external model of this ship is as expected from MAAM's development team. In one word, stunning. The attention to detail of the ship itself is remarkable. All regular and expected animations are included, and even a few unexpected 'extra' animations are included like a droppable torpedo. The regulars are very well done of course, and include great suspension modeling, flaps, and control surfaces."

"This aircraft comes full of 2D panel options and many sub-panels. If you enjoy good 2D panels, this is the ship for you. Also, many sub-panels are included. These sub-panels look remarkably detailed and realistic, because they are photoreal and taken right out of the real Avenger that MAAM has restored. The Virtual Cockpit is near seamless in its representation, with nearly every switch, knob, and lever being clickable. Not to mention the amazing detail included in everything, I just feel like I'm sitting in their Avenger when I 'climb' into this ship. Everything needed for your day-to-day operations is clickable in this virtual cockpit; radios, aircraft and engine controls, and tons of little extras."

"The Avenger's flight dynamics are another home run of the package. Very docile and forgiving handling characteristics make this ship an absolute joy to fly. Flight is very enjoyable, and as I said, forgiving. She'll cruise along nicely with just a bit of trim work and at a nice cruising speed. The sounds of this package are simply more of what I call the best. Recorded from the real Avenger that MAAM has, you simply cannot beat the sounds."

Wrapping up his look at MAAM's Avenger Chris says, "I greatly enjoyed this highly anticipated release. It's going to be one of my regular aircraft to fly. MAAM's work to keep you immersed simply can't be beat."
