Multi-screen requirement

Recommended Posts

Are there any functions of the PMDG part of the forthcoming B777 which could usefully use a second/third monitor?

Richard,

We only have the NGX to go by ATM.

I have been successfully using multi monitors within FS9 & latterly FSX for about 7 years...from a purely practical point of view so long as your GPU is capable of supporting multiple monitors there should be no issues interacting with FSX. Ensure the multi-monitor set up is configured correctly within windows & also ensure that the resolution of the second monitor matches that of the primary one within the FSX cfg.

In the NGX I always move the 2d Lighting Panel, 2d MCP, 2d Quick Access Radio Panel & both 2d CDUs over to my second monitor.

If my fading memory serves me correctly we should have available to us some 2d pop ups for the T7...I sincerely hope we at least see the MCP & CDUs available as 2d pop ups. T7 versions of the 2d Lighting Panel & the Quick Access Radio Panel would also be useful, as would the availability to interract with the Electronic Checklists & the like.

Personally, I just use the native FSX view panning commands & controls for 3d flying...there are programmes out there that can do this for you but I have yet to find one that works effectively with a multi monitor set up & in full screen (let the flames begin). As with everything FS related its about personal choice & what the end user is confortable with.

Besides...they are an extra programme to go wrong at the most inconvenient moment.

Combine this with a networked PC (or laptop) to run peripherals such as WX/ Graphics Engines, ATC clients, TOPCAT, Flight Planners, Chartage, IE & Skype etc & you have all components for a v immersive full screen FSX experience where you can happily fly about all day in a 3D view with some essential stuff that a pilot interracts with regularly available as 2d on a secondary monitor & all the other "gubbins" that helps to enhance FSX on a totally separate computer. You wil never have to minimise FSX ever again to fiddle with an external programme.

I'd also wager that at least 50% of all the 'poor FSX performance' issues we hear about on a regular basis are due in part to the amount of peripheral & additional programmes users run on their FSX computer whilst running FSX...buy moving all of these to a networked computer you will see a performance improvment inside FSX.

The only advice I would give here is the use of "hardwiring" to link networked computers (via your router) rather than say a wireless connection for obvious reasons. CAT Cable is relatively cheap for what it enables!

Indeed I am contemplating a further GFX Card & further monitors to enhance things further.

Hi Steve,

Thanks or your fullsome reply. Like you, I use additional monitors, one for the pilot ATC client, and another for AS2012.

In using the words 'functions of the PMDG part of the forthcoming B777', I was trying to get a feel for those parts of the PMDG product designed to optionally use a second/third monitor where one is available, rather than functions of software beyond the PMDG product.

It would be great, though, if we could use additional monitors to support 3D windows of views to half-left and half-right. But perhaps I am asking for a step too far?

Regards, R

Thing is I dont do as you say.

Those programmes peripheral to FSX I run on a separate but networked (by hardwiring) laptop. I mentioned this as it is a sure fire way to unburden your FSX CPU is performance is an issue.

I mentioned that I placed some of the PMDG NGX 2d panels onto my second monitor on my FSX PC & that we might reasonably expect some 2d panels for the T7:

That part of the Q might be better answered by someone with more insight into 3d panels.

Normally, when PMDG supports DOCKABLE windows - like they do with their 737 and even with the 747 - you can drag and drop these over to another monitor. (PFD, MFD, FMC...EFB ?)

For their full simulation version this is supported but for their "light" line I am not sure.
