[ History ]

Kerkira airport in Greece, is the NorthWesternmost island airport of the Ionian sea and Greece, closest to the international borders with Italy to the Northwest.

It is named after the famous Greek Politician Ioannis Kapodistrias.

Beyond its tourist destination popularity, it is also known as one of Greece's dangerous airports due to its surrounding terrain. As I state in my "Flight Simulation in Greece" document (link further down)

Quote :

"In Kerkira (Corfu) you get a runway built on land filled area over water looking at a mountain 7 Nm the North and approach this runway by VORDME offset course due to another mountain to the West, while on short finals you have a hill just East of Rwy 35 threshold."

I think that explains it best!

Kanoni hill to the East of 35 threshold, may be an aviation obstruction, but certainly offers some stunning views from 25 m height just 400m East of the threshold, from a nice terrace of a local Hotel while you enjoy your Greek coffee !
