Virtual Co-Pilot Ver4.8 for FS2002

(C)1997-2003 George Dorkofikis

Online Manual

This adventure will add a virtual co-pilot to your aircraft. Virtual co-pilot will add many new features to your aircraft that unfortunately are missing from Flight Simulator.  This adventure was not made having one single aircraft in mind. Instead it includes warnings from many different aircraft types, in order to allow use  in any type of aircraft and not limit the pilot to a single type.

WARNING

Some adventure functions may NOT work with highly sophisticated & details panels like Pilot In Command, Dreamfleet B737-400 and PSS Airbus A320 series.  The functions that do not work with the above mentioned panels are concerning the autopilot altitude and heading changes, due to the fact that those panels use their own autopilot gauges and not the default FS autopilot.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

CAUTION: THIS ADVENTURE WILL NOT WORK WITH ANY OTHER VERSION OTHER THAN FS2002.

 INSTALLATION

STARTING VIRTUAL CO-PILOT IN FS2002

Go to Flight, Select a Flight and scroll down to the FS2000 Adventures.   From the list choose the Virtual Co-Pilot adventure.  After you read the briefing (optional) and load the adventure, the adventure is initialized you will asked you if you wish to configure Virtual Co-Pilot or use the default settings. Read further below in the adventure description section for more information about what the default settings are.

Regretfully, the only way to finish the adventure is by finishing the flight by pressing ESC.  Unfortunately this mean that the flight will be completely finished getting you back to the 'Create A flight' menu of FS2002.  This is a limitation of FS2002 and the way (quite bad I might say) Microsoft chose to end adventures.

It is REQUIRED that you are on the ground with parking brakes set before starting the adventure.  This will enable the program to detect the correct cockpit height. Although during initialization VCP tries to determine whether you are flying or not, starting Virtual Co-Pilot during flight may cause unneeded warnings or weird situations.

ADVENTURE KEYS

SHIFT "U" Increases Decision Height (DH) by 5ft
Initial/Default value is 250ft AGL
Maximum limit 500ft AGL
SHIFT "D" Decreases Decision Height (DH) by 5ft
Minimum limit 50ft AGL.(For ILS CAT II/III approaches)
CTRL "3" Prompts the Pilot for setting the Vr speed bug.
(Default 135Kts).  During approach your aircraft will warn you with a sound if your speed drops below your Vr -5kts (IAS) setting.   You will also be warned if your approach speed is higher than your Vr +40Kts (IAS) setting.
So, you may also want to reset the Vr speed to approach reference speed during your descent.
CTRL "1" Prompts the Pilot for setting the V1 Speed.  (Default 125Kts)
CTRL "2" Prompts the Pilot for setting the V2 Speed.  (Default 145Kts)
CTRL "4" Prompts the Pilot for setting the Flaps reference speeds for Flaps UP/5/10/20 Degrees (IAS)
CTRL "5" Prompts the Pilot for setting the Acceleration Height (Ft, AGL) (Default 1500Ft AGL)
CTRL "U" Increase Autopilot altitude hold by 500ft (1000ft above FL100).
See detailed instructions further down this document.
CTRL "D"  Decrease Autopilot altitude hold by 500ft (1000ft above FL100).
See detailed instructions further down this document.

SHIFT "[" Decrease heading hold (LEFT) by 1 degree.
CTRL "]" Increase heading hold (RIGHT) by 10 degrees.
See detailed instructions further down this document.
SHIFT "]" Increase heading hold (RIGHT) by 1 degree.
CTRL "6" Exchanges the frequencies between NAV 1 and NAV 2.
i.e. NAV1 will be tuned to the NAV2 frequency and vice versa. This function will not change the OBS settings.
SHIFT "F" Fuel Dump emulation.
See detailed instructions further down this document.
SHIFT "B" Fasten Seatbelts signs ON/OFF switch. If during configuration you have selected automatic operation, 'fasten seatbelt' signs operation will turn to manual.
SHIFT "S" No smoking signs ON/OFF switch. If during configuration you have selected automatic operation, 'no smoking' signs operation will turn to manual.
CTRL "T" Configure Virtual Co-Pilot.  Available only on ground.
CTRL-SHIFT-"T" Perform  the before take-off checklist.  If you have selected Automatic checklists the automation will be switched off.
CTRL-SHIFT-"L" Perform the landing checklist.  If you have selected Automatic checklists the automation will be switched off. Works only when airborne and after the descend checklist has been performed.
CTRL-SHIFT-"D" Perform the Descend checklist.  If you have selected Automatic checklists the automation will be switched off. Works only when airborne and after the after take-off checklist has been performed.
CTRL-SHIFT-"S" Perform the Before Start-up OR the shutdown checklist depending if the Landing checklist is performed or not..  If you have selected Automatic checklists the automation will be switched off. Works only on ground.

CTRL-SHIFT-"C" Performs the call to the crew to position for take-off OR landing depending if you are airborne or not.
CTRL "Q" Accept displayed value when entering V1,Vr,V2, flap speeds or number of wavs. This key is also used for turning on the Approach mode on the Autopilot. You do not have to worry. The key is only used and trapped during the input and is disengage after you are done typing in the value.

Decision Height and Speed bugs settings will be confirmed by displayed messages.
These messages will remain on the screen for maximum 3secs, in order not to interrupt flight and visual clues.

ADVENTURE DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTIONS

All speeds referenced in this part are Indicated AirSpeed in Kts (KIAS)

Configuring Virtual Co-Pilot to your needs.

    Virtual Co-Pilot calls.

  • Parking Brakes.
  • Speed calls during take-off roll.
  • Speed calls during landing roll.
  • Calls during climb.
  • Autopilot.
  • Descent and Approach.
  • During approach, your co-pilot will call for flap extension at the appropriate speeds as you have set them before take-off or during flight.  You can set the flap reference speeds by pressing CTRL-F.  Calls are made at +- 2Kts of each flap reference speed.
  • Ground Proximity Warning System.
  • Aircraft configuration errors.
  • Fuel low warning.
  • Cabin calls.
  • Crew announcements.
  • Go Around.
  • Virtual Co-Pilot monitors your approach.  In case you decide to go around, your co-pilot will call for the take-off/climb flap setting according to the aircraft type you have selected during initialization.
  • Gear up call will be given on positive rate of climb.  From this point after, your co-pilot will act as on climb.
  • A message "Go Around initiated" will appear on your screen confirming that the program has detected the go-around.
  • The go around trigger is activated in two parts.
First the program has to determine that you are actually making an approach.  The program will assume that you are making an approach when you descent below 2500ft with vertical speed more than 200ft/min descending, and with IAS (Indicated Air Speed) less than your V2+40Kts.
The go-around is activated if you climb with vertical speed more than 500ft/min for more than 2 seconds.
  • User defined Speed settings.  How to use the input routine.
  • Virtual Co-pilot allows the pilot to set the V1, Vr, V2 and flap retraction/extension speeds
  • To do this, press the respective key  of the speed setting you wish to change (CTRL-P/S/M/F).
  • A message will confirm what speed you will change.
  • Type the new setting slowly, in three digits, one digit at a time, and wait a while between each digit until the speed display is updated after your input.  APL is a bit slow with key entries, and if you key in the speed too fast, some entries may not be recognized.
  • Once you have given the third digit, wait until the value is displayed.
  • If you are happy with it, press CTRL-A to accept it, otherwise retype the speed from the start.  The setting will only be accepted by pressing CTRL-A.
  • Sorry, there is no escape from this point.  You will have to accept a speed to continue.
  • DO NOT PRESS THE ESC KEY TO EXIT THE INPUT ROUTINE.  DOING SO WILL TERMINATE THE ADVENTURE AND YOUR FLIGHT!.
  • Fuel Dump emulation.
  • Exchanging the Nav Radios frequencies.
