Painting Tutorials Web Site: Home Page and News Items

By Jim Oates

A very warm welcome

I remember when I was starting to learn to paint aircraft. I did not know who to turn to or where I could get help. I found a lot of the forums were beyond my level and I spent long hours into the night doing very basic tasks which should have taken no more than minutes. Then I came across Simon Jamies' tutorial using Fireworks and the 737-400 included with FS2000 as the aircraft. His tutorial is included below which I am in the process of updating. With this I learnt about layers and what they could do to increase productivity dramatically. One happy painter and one happy painters wife!

I have not been able to find any other tutorial like Simons' anywhere. Now I am doing my own tutorial using Paint Shop Pro version 6.02 and CRJ200-ER by Barry Blaisdell as the aircraft. Two different aircraft, two different applications and two different texture formats. I cannot forget Walt Barrett who was kind enough to send his beginners tutorial for all to share. Thanks Walt.

I hope that together, with the tutorials I have here we can learn, teach and have a bit of fun as well. Some of the things I will be telling you about will save you a lot of time. Did you know you can take a day texture and, by using layers, change it to a night texture and have the whole thing completed in less than 5 minutes and that includes adding night lighting?

These pages are dedicated to all the aircraft painters wife's, husbands, children, cats, dogs and anything else that is lacking attention because you are "spending too long in front of that computer again dear". I have an understanding wife, sorry her name slips my mind at the moment, I am thinking of my next colour scheme. With a bit of help with these tutorials you just might.........."coming dear" sorry goto go!

Please feel free to comment, good or bad about what you find here and if nothing else, drop a wee line to say hello. "Yes dear, almost done, I'm sending a letter to the bank manager"

As most sites are, this is a work in progress. I hope you like it.

I have imported all of Simon Jamies tutorial onto the AVSIM.com website. I have updated all the pages and now all the links work, I think!. If not then please let me know. Now that that is done I can get back to doing the Paint Shop. Pro tutorial

14th July 2001

I have removed the web board. Mainly because nobody was using it. I will do the same with the guest book as well. I have added part 6 to my paint shop pro tutorial and we are ready to start night textures which will be coming in part 7

21st July 2001

Marco Rensen, a member of Flightsim Developers has allowed me to host his tutorial. This is a night texture tutorial and I have enclosed his original zip file for you to download

After a "fair bit o nagin" I have added to my Paint Shop Pro tutorial, link below. No I am not going to tell you what is there, you will have to check it out for yourself. It will be well worth the effort though.

If you would all be so kind to take a look at the top of my page. I have been accepted as an AVSIM partner site. I am very pleased indeed that they feel my efforts and all my contributors are worthy of this. I would also like to thank each and every one of you who have sent me e-mail or signed my guest book. I have had nothing but good comments. It seems that there has been a lot of people waiting for a site just like this one to appear.

I have still to sort out this page as it is looking a bit messy and I need to add a links page. I am also working on my Paint Shop Pro tutorial as a PDF file which was requested by my readers. I also need to sort the FSD links below.

9th September 2001

I have been made a few changes and hopefully the site is easier to naviagate around. There is a dedicated links page and the tutorials are on a seperate page too. I have had a lot of nice feedback regarding this site so want to thank you all for your input. You will also find available my Paint Shop Pro tutorial as a PDF format file. I hope you like it.

No more emails - Explained below. I stated below that I lost my job and would try and get to answering emails if I could. But some people are just plain rude. Not only do they send huge enclosures but because I did not respond, I then get rude emails with even bigger enclosures.

One person even told me to hurry up as their shareware version of Paint Shop Pro was due to run out.

I started this site with Simon Jamie's tutorial and from there developed my own. This is for free to help people. Most of my visitors to this site are great and I like to read the comments in the guest book. But don't start giving me grief when I don't respond to your email. I love to help people and I appologise for the lack of updates. When I get sorted out I will do what I can.

Thanks to all my loyal readers for everything, 41 thousand and counting. Your support is great and this site is dedicated to you.

Sorry for the lack of updates. First of all I would like to thank you all for your e-mail. I appreciate you sending them. I will certainly try and get you some sort of response, but as stated below I just do not have the time. The reason that I have not been able to update this site or indeed respond to your e-mail is because I am currently looking for work. I lost my job due to a restructure and this is top priority at the moment. I have been thinking about adding a link to my 2 other websites so you can see who I am and the other side of my life so here you are. This is the first one. Advertising. Of course it is. lol

:

Exciting stuff or what? The second site is my band site. The John Ford Highland Pipe Band. We are based in St Louis, MO. We recently returned from New York were they had over 10,000 pipers, drummers and banner carriers marching through. This was to raise money for various charities. Here is my band site.

Once again, I apologise for not updating this site with tutorials and information. I will do my best and please try and visit the forums for help. But if you e-mail. me I will try and respond.

10th February 2002

Please read I have to advise you, good readers, that I will no longer be able to respond to your emails. It is taking up too much of my time. I hope you all understand how much work this all takes. If you have any problems can I suggest you try the many forums that are around.

I am still trying to finish part 8 of the paint shop pro tutorial.

As you can see from the logos above I now have the honour of being a part of the Avsim Educational Resource Centre. I feel very privileged indeed.

I have had more requests for items on how to paint the default FS2002 aircraft than I care to mention. Mark Kiszkiel has come to the rescue and he tells all. This tutorial deals with the default 747 and shows how to convert the textures for painting using Paint Shop Pro.

Nice one Mark. Click this link for his tutorial How to repaint a default FS2002 Boeing 747-400. Dont forget to visit the tutorials page and check out the downloads section too.

Mark has already created a downloadable version. Click the Quicklink below.

There is a 2 new additions to the tutorials page. I have added a Photoshop tutorial by Finn Newick and a Texturing tutorial using Corel DRAW by David Eckert. I get a lot of e-mail asking about Photoshop and Corel DRAW so hopefully this should keep our non PSP painters happy. Thanks Finn and David for your efforts with these.

23rd September 2001

My Paint Shop Pro tutorial has been completely re-done. I have changed almost every page. Hopefully it makes more sense. Let me know if it doesn't.

16th September 2001

The Fireworks tutorial by Simon Jamie is now available as a downloadable PDF file. It is about 450k in size.

There is now a frequently asked questions page (FAQ). I see a similar trend in some of the questions being asked and I know that there is some confusion in this tutorial. I have a few more questions to add. Part 3 has been redone and hopefully should make a lot more sense.
