Bear's Cave

The world of Flight Simulators

short reviews by Steve "Bear" Cartwright

The week of February 16th thru the 22nd was actually a bit slow for any new or original files and the download count for many files showed this as well, but I managed to find a couple of aircraft and scenery files for everyone to check out. The one exception to this slow library week, was the upload of the trial version of the MAAM-SIM B-25 "Briefing Time", bt_trial.zip, which did manage to rack an impressive 7,000 + downloads. Lets take a look and see what I turned up besides the beautiful MAAM-SIM B-25, from this quiet week in Feburary:

FS2002 Aircraft

Erick Cantu, Jonathan Stewart, and Mike Baumann have collaborated and the results of their combined work has produced one of the most attractive appearing DC-9s available. These aircraft contain all the FS2002 bells & whistles including, FS2002 lighting, reflective textures, accurately rendered gear and fully animated, flaps, slats, spoilers, reverser clam shells—you name it, these aircraft have it.

Liveries available include TWA 1980s, TWA 1970s, Northwest Airlines, Hawaiian Air, Eastern, Delta, Cebu Pacific, and base white textures, so that you can paint your own favorite airline colors. These downloads do rely on the default 737 for a panel and sounds (check out Paul Golding's MD-80 panel for these aircraft from the AVSIM library at pg.md80.fs2k.pnl.v2a.zip).

I particularly liked the Delta DC-9 textures, as the finish appears as an "in service" aircraft, lending a strong sense of reality. Very well done aircraft and with Sam Chin having provided the FDE, we've got a sure winner here. None of these aircraft garnished much more than a few hundred downloads (save for the Delta version which just managed to break 1,000 downloads) and I believe that the more of you that see the quality in this aircraft, those download numbers will rise sharply! Excellent job guys! ...Bear!

FS2002 Scenery

It seems that over the last couple of years, there has been no shortage of quality scenery files for the United Kingdom! I don't believe any one country has garnered a longer list of freeware files than maybe for the State of Alaska in the United States, but heck, I love flying in England, Scotland, and Ireland (not to mention Wales and Northern Ireland too).

Here's a very excellently presented and photorealistic version of the Land's End Airport on the most Southwestern tip of the United Kingdom and this scenery package is a real beauty! Reminiscent of a Richard Goldstein style airport (Flying M Ranch, Diamond Point, Hurricane, etc..), Robert Erskine has designed a very beautiful and very realistic appearing grass airfield. The scenery package does include Chapel Carn Brea (a nearby hill) and the St. Michaels Mount (just off the southern beach from the airport). This is a great little airport for a taildragger, an ultra-light, or any other light aircraft you prefer to fly! Get this scenery package; it's small, it's free, and Robert Erskine deserves a standing ovation for his excellent work! ...Bear!
