Bear's Cave

The world of Flight Simulators

short reviews by Steve "Bear" Cartwright

Well, another week has slipped by and as usual it was another busy week for the AVSIM library (which is now on its own server, which should speed things up for us all) and that 30,000 file count total is getting ever closer and closer.

There were numerous files enjoying a high download count from the week of March 16th through the 22nd, with the Antonov AN-24B (antonov_an-24b.zip) by Dimitri Samborski being the week's winner at just over 4,300 downloads to-date. Dimitri's AN-24B was followed up by the RSDG's Lake Renegade 270 Turbo (rsdgrenegade270.zip), Michael Pietzsch's Concorde Pack (concorde_pack_ver_1.zip), a Eurocopter AS-332 Super Puma Helog AG by Dirk E. Fassbender (as32hel.zip), and finally there was another outstanding Douglas DC-3 (cpabetsy.zip) in Cathay Pacific colors from the team of Jan Visser, Mark Beaumont, and Jorge Salas.

Despite the busy library and above outstanding downloads, I did manage to locate a couple or three files that slipped by many of you, so let's take a look at what I found:

Harald Nehring uploaded three versions of the Airbus A310 (322, 324, and the 325 series), each painted in house colors and each designed using Gmax. These aircraft do include the full spectrum of animation (except for opening passenger doors), do possess reflective textures, and are compatible with the paint kit 32xPNTv1.zip by Harald Neharing and Frank Weiss. I took one of these aircraft for a quick spin around the block at San Francisco International and they fly quite well, thank you, and they look very detailed and very sharp in their appearance from the spot view.

Lacking an included custom panel or sounds, you will need to do a quick search here at the AVSIM library for the appropriate replacements, but in the end these are beautiful aircraft that deserve a second look by you Airbus fans! ...Bear!

FS2002 Scenery

Not being a regular flyer to Finland, I normally would have missed this really outstanding scenery package by B. Fabricius and T. Högström, but thankfully I did notice it and it is really outstanding and I suggest everyone take a look at what I found.

This is a photorealistic version of the airport at Hanko, Finland (EFHN) and it provides for many VFR flight features and objects for the surrounding area as well as the airport itself. The package includes the textures for all seasons and even includes some custom autogen, but there are little or no night textures for the airport buildings. Overall, this scenery package is somewhat reminiscent of the GeoRender scenery from LAGO, except of course that it is freeware and available from the AVSIM library. ...Bear!

FS2002 Scenery

Utilizing the NOVA Gold airport textures, Sabino Yacobone has put together a scenery package that covers the Arturo Michelena International Airport in Valencia, Venezuela (that's in South America for all you geography challenged flight simmers like me).

Sabino's Arturo Michelena airport scenery is very realistic appearing and includes night lighting and night textures. Also included is a Aserca Virtual Airline hanger (fictional) that has opening doors, as you taxi up to them, kinda cool actually. By improving the auto generation, Sabino has also improved the appearance of the nearby city of Valencia, plus there are custom ground textures surrounding the airport. The default FS2002 had not included the VOR at Arturo, so Sabino added this with his scenery upload; so overall, a quite nice package that all of our South American flight simming friends should not overlook. ...Bear!
