Bear's Cave

The world of Flight Simulators

short reviews by Steve "Bear" Cartwright

The uploads into the AVSIM library with files for all sims is rapidly increasing, but the number of quality uploads for FS2002 continues to swell even more so. During the week of March 23rd through the 29th we saw 7 different aircraft (for FS2002) make the grade for number of downloads, but surprisingly it was a small little utility file that was that week's winner with a count of 6,300+ downloads. This was the really terrific Tarmac, Concrete, and Runway texture file runtaxtu.zip from Gerrit Kranenbrag.

Following that was Eric Dantès APM 20 Lionceau apm_20_lionceau.zip; Nick Karatzides & Dirk Fassbender's Aerospatiale AS-332C1 Super Puma as-332c1_haf_v1.zip; Peter Brun and Mario Coelho's Gulfstream G100 g100-moz.zip; and another outstanding ATR 72-500 from Francisco Sánchez-Castañer fsc_atr72500_v101.zip. Rick Brown, Ariel Cimino, Cherar Suarez, and Daniel Gazzano put together a very interesting Pucará twin turboprop pucará.zip; Christian Davi had his Jodel D140C "Mouquetaire" jodel_d140cski.zip; and rounding out this week's download winners was David Friswell's Pilatus PC-7 pc7_v1.zip. Overall a really terrific week for all of you that collect FS aircraft! Despite these excellent choices though, there were three other aircraft that only managed to garnish 500 to 800 downloads each, while they frankly deserve a closer look.

No matter that this aircraft is a bit poly-heavy, overall this is a really outstanding FS version of the Fleet Model 2. This aircraft is of very high quality and very detailed in its external appearance with reflective textures, fully animated components, 2D panel, and a dynamic 3D virtual cockpit-panel. Steven did rely on the default Sopwith for sounds, but those are generally quite acceptable for this aircraft. Paul Clawson gave permission for use of his airfile, so you VFR hedge-hoppers out there that missed this one will love it! ...Bear!

These fellows once again upload another of the Convair line of propliners and this time it's the model CV-440 (the USNavy designation for the CV-440 is the R4Y1). Like their previous Convair uploads, this is a complete package including, Gmax designed aircraft, reflective and very real appearing textures, custom sounds, custom 2D panel, dynamic 3D panel-cockpit (with really sharp and clear gauges I might add), fully animated components, and opening door (with animated folding and extending stairways). Barely exceeding 700 downloads each is not right everyone, as these are really a nice and a very high quality pair of FS2002 aircraft! No matter how full your harddrive is, there is always room for one or two more FS aircraft that are put together at the quality level of these two aircraft! ...Bear!

Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer RAF

Despite the lack of a custom panel or sounds (Vladimir used the default Cessna for both) this is still a very nice flying and appearing version of the Twin Pioneer! Obviously designed with either FSDS2 or Gmax, this FS aircraft sports reflective textures, fully animated components, and a very realistic appearing cockpit with pilots (from an exterior spot view). The originals (realworld) of these aircraft were built in the mid-1950s and Vladimir has painted it in the colors of the RAF. Now we just need to find the appropriate panel and sounds and we'll be set to go! ...Bear!
