AVSIM is once again pleased to announce, with this fifth in a series, a 10 week expose of the soon to be released Flight Unlimited III by Looking Glass Studios. AVSIM and 4CDS, along with Looking Glass, have teamed to bring you in the next 7 weeks a complete look at the FU3 product, it's planes, panels and scenery. During this remaining 6 week period, 4CDS is holding a contest, the winners of which will receive a free copy of Flight Unlimited III each week of the next 6 weeks. The Yoke and a free copy of FU3 will be awarded the final week of the review period. You can enter the contest here. In addition to the contest, 4CDS is also providing additional screen shots of FU3. You can view those here.

AVSIM has opened a special forum just for discussing the Flight Unlimited III material you will see here. Looking Glass has promised that FU3 design team members will frequent the forum and answer questions and provide more information as their time allows. You can access the new forum here.

By no means should this be considered an AVSIM review. We have not received our review copies of this product yet, and the material included here is from Looking Glass. We hope you enjoy the information and the images and the glimpse they provide into this about-to-be-released simulator!

Here is what Looking Glass has to say of the Muskrat Seaplane:

Created in the 1940's for use in the Canadian bush, the Muskrat is a durable aircraft well suited for exploration. A six-seater, it has the capacity for fairly heavy loads. The Muskrat was originally developed with a radial Pratt & Whitney R-98 engine, producing a maximum of 400 horsepower. Later, the design was upgraded to a 450 hp engine. The first Muskrat flight took place in 1947, marking 1997 the Muskrat's fiftieth anniversary with the release of the Turbo Yoosun Muskrat. The Turbo Muskrat has a more powerful and reliable turbocharged engine produced by Yoosun Industries. This gives the new Muskrat a more streamlined appearance as well as a much faster cruise and climb speed. In the years to follow this aircraft's maiden flight, 986 were purchased by the United States Army and Air Force. The Muskrat's all-metal construction, high-lift wing, and versatile flap system has made it a successfully rugged flying machine. Its capacity for short takeoffs and landings is unmatched in its class. Although often fitted with floats or skis, it is equally at home with wheels.

Pilots new to the Muskrat are advised to keep a watchful eye on airspeed and bank angles during climb as the aircraft in Flight III is equipped solely with floats. The resulting additional vertical surface can cause some directional instability.

Here are some further comments by Peter James, Lead Designer of Flight Unlimited III, on the Muskrat:

"The Muskrat is the newly updated version of the original Yoosun Industries' 1950's Catfish. This modernized version includes most noticeably a high performance turbo charged engine that will propel the Muskrat through the skies at over 120kts. Improved climb performance will help the bush pilot get his load up and out of tight mountain creeks, lakes and rivers. Takeoff at 55kts and land as low as 40k. Higher service ceilings will enable the Muskrat to fly high over the mountains - something most seaplanes can not do. It's "truck like" handling is a reminder of how sturdy and rugged the Muskrat is. Extendable pontoon wheels will enable landing on paved fields. Steering is done thru differential braking which is tied to the nosewheels in this case. While not the most graceful airplane in the world, the Yoosun Turbo Muskrat is number one for getting the job done."
