'Kodiak Adventures' Gamepack Addon for FS2004

Next Generation STOL Bush Aircraft Features Garmin G-1000 Panel

Press Release
August 12, 2006: Lionheart Creations Ltd.

The Actual Kodiak:

The Kodiak is a 10-place single engine turboprop utility airplane, both land and float capable. This plane is the first backcountry aircraft designed for the 21st century. It is essentially a replacement for the Cessna Caravan for both commercial and “mission” use throughout the world. Its essential characteristics are that it uses jet fuel rather than aviation gasoline (which has become virtually unavailable in most 3rd world countries) and has state-of-the-art STOL capabilities.

The Kodiak combines superior STOL performance and high useful load. It offers turbine reliability with the Pratt & Whitney PT6 750 shp turbine engine, and has the ability to land on unimproved surfaces. The creative wing design allows the Kodiak to take off in under 700 feet at full gross takeoff weight of 6750 lbs with a useful load of 3450 lbs and climb at over 1700 feet per minute.

The Kodiak is also the first production aircraft to be fitted with the Garmin G1000 glass panel—pilot and co-pilot PFDs, plus a center-mounted MFD that displays ND/GPS data; engine, electrical and fuel management information (EICAS); and/or weather radar/TCAS data—as original equipment.

Quest Aircraft has its origins in the humanitarian and mission aviation market where rugged design for highly reliable remote operations is essential. The mission for which the aircraft was developed is reflected in the values and purpose of the company and its personnel [see “The Kodiak Story” at Quest’s website for descriptions and pictures of various locales in the Pacific Northwest where the Kodiak is being tested].

Quest Aircraft has taken a unique approach to funding the Kodiak’s development, manufacture and sale. While charitable foundation and personal contributions have brought it to the point of current FAA certification (which is expected this Fall), profits from commercial sales will be used to discount the aircraft’s cost to Christian ministries, such as MAF – Mission Aviation Fellowship.

Lionheart Creations' Implementation:

The Quest Kodiak for Flight Simulator, FS2004 is a detailed and multi platform package with 9 models ranging from Cargo models to Passenger mini-liners, to rescue air ambulance-style models. Each of these models has an optional belly pod that you can bring up during selection of your Kodiak. There are also a set of Amphibian models of Kodiaks to choose from, each with the various models mentioned above. The pontoons sport retractable gear for both land and sea capabilities, just as the actual Kodiak features.

There are 7 unique texture packs for the various Kodiak platforms, which span from the wild Yellow and Black factory paint scheme, to a sporty bright Red livery, to a Island hopper with a cool caribbean look, to a Red Cross version with weathered effects, as well as a brightly painted United States Coast Gaurd edition. The textures for the exteriors are in 32bit high resolution format and feature realistic riveted panel textures and some dynamic shine and reflection as well. If you add together all the platform models of the Kodiak to each having the 7 paint schemes available, you have 63 versions of Kodiaks to choose from in this package alone. Note that for slower computers, the Kodiak's 7 texture packs also come with low resolution DXT3 exterior textures so you can change out the textures for faster frame rate performance.

Various animations in the Kodiak include; all animated control surfaces, opening front pilot doors on right and left, opening cargo door at left rear, animated controls at the instrument panel in the virtual cockpit mode, fowler flaps animation, seats that slide backwards when the front doors open, and a pilot that disappears when the engines prop comes to a full halt. Some of the details on the Kodiak model by Lionheart Creations were done to precision, such as the wild high lift leading edge wing design that is a composite of two different wing cords for STOL operation, wing surface airflow tabs at the elevators top surface, the cool Shark like turbine intake scoop in the front nose, high detail landing gear, and precision airframe model shape. Even the Fowler flap retraction tracks under the flaps are identical to factory drawings. You will also find the Kodiak flight models to feature a full exterior on the VC models for those that have programs that allow you to walk around your aircraft.

The panel comes with the new state of the art Garmin G-1000 Avionics package. This panel, which has massively captivated the Aviation sector and is now found in planes such as Cessna and Beechcraft, is now 'standard equipment' on this new aircraft. The Garmin system was desgned from scratch for this project by renown gauge designer Nick Pike and features authentic operations and menu's with smoothness in operation and little to no frame rate loss. The Garmin's dual screen setup, (3 screens if you count the co-pilot's PFD) comprise a brilliant PFD and MFD combination for both Navigation and GPS terrain following capabilities.

Scenery:

The Kodiak Adventure Gamepack doesn't stop there. This package comes with a large scenery pack that is is vast, wild, and challenging and will put you through the paces of what a Bush plane can really do. The 'adventure' pack is based on flights that Missionary pilots actually fly in remote parts of the world. The flights start out at a fictional airport in the western rainforest mountains of Bolivia west of the Amazon. You are a Missionary pilot at a base called Todos Santos airfield. From there, you have 14 flight missions that assign you to fly to the surrounding 6 villages that range from being in a box end canyon forest to an Amazon river village, to a mountain lake village. The various flight missions include dropping off National Geographic photographers, to shipping out flu vaccines and medical supplies as well as a rescue mission to find a downed antique aircraft on a remote mountain top.

The scenery is large as each village is its own creation and layout. Some of the grass strips are 'carved out' of the forest, so you might wish to turn off 'Detect Colision' as you might be touching some branches with wingtips. You will find a pop-up map of Bolivia in the cockpit that has your villages marked out for reference. When you click on a 'Kodiak Adventure' flight, you come to a detailed HTML Flight Intro that also features screen shots, chart layout of your flight, and some cool music to get you in the mood for a wild adventure.
