Bear's Cave

The world of Flight Simulators

short reviews by Steve "Bear" Cartwright

Believe it or not, it is coming up on my 2nd anniversary at doing my Bear Picks from the Bear Cave, so this month marks something of a special occasion for me and the AVSIM Library. Not only was August a record setting month for the number of uploads into the AVSIM library, but my picks have garnered 13, yes you did read that correctly, 13 Bear Gold Awards, along with my first dual Gold winner! You see, August was not only a record month for files uploaded to the AVSIM library (nearly 300 files were uploaded in one day as an example), it was also a record month for files that I downloaded in consideration of my August picks (88 separate files downloaded, installed, and tested) and from these 88 I've picked the top 20, plus included a bonus pick from September (BAC 1-11 Panel) to get us started for next months picks as well.

Last month we had just about everything under the sun uploaded including: All of Project Opensky's aircraft, FFG's version of the DC-10 updated to FS2002, many FDE improvement files, more repaints of existing aircraft than you can shake a stick at (I even got into the act of repainting FS aircraft last month), Landclass files, scenery packages, new autogen files from Gerrish Gray, unique utilities, and the list just goes on and on! Well, enough babbling, here are my picks for the month of August!

Greg Pepper has designed several excellent FS aircraft (his Grumman Albatross comes immediately to mind), but I'm of the opinion that his latest, the Beechcraft Super G18, is easily his absolute best yet!

Designed with Gmax, Greg has included: custom 2D panel, 3D dynamic virtual cockpit/panel, fully animated parts, weather worn & reflective textures, and opening doorway with passenger steps. The only compromise Greg made was with the sounds, as he did rely on the default Baron for these, but that is easily updated by installing many of the fine sound files available out there that more accurately depict the radial engines the Beech was originally equipped with.

Based on the number of downloads within the first week or two after Greg uploaded it, it would appear that I am covering familiar ground with most of you. Since its release, there have also been a number of repaints, so you might want to check those out as well and don't forget to download Greg's fixit file (b18gfix.zip). Greg, you get my Bear Gold Award on this one, very nicely done! ...Bear!

A few weeks ago, Mark and company took one of Mikko Maliniemi's BAe Hawk designs and combined them into a flyable 4 member Red Arrows team. Now they have returned, but with a new package that includes a single aircraft, a 4-member team, and a 9-member aircraft flight demonstration team. Also they have included an all new 2D panel (Mark Beaumont), custom HUD (Eric Marciano), full cockpit views (including being able to see the other team member aircraft from the 2D cockpit), and custom smoke from each aircraft. Mark has also set it up so that you can fly from the lead or Red 7 positions, giving you a number of different views. Included also are a lite version (minus the cockpit views), for those with smaller or lower performing computers.

Click for full size image

The single aircraft displays blue smoke, with the 4 member team displaying red smoke, and the 9 member team having white smoke.

The nice thing about this package is that you do get the single version of the excellent BAe Hawk by Mikko Maliniemi, with the new panel by Mark and Eric and then on occasion you can fly one of the two group configurations if you so desire! Those are a screenshot looking to happen and they are quite interesting from either the tower or spot views to watch! Considering the number of downloads for this package, I see that many of you out there agree with me on this one. It is the combination of the aircraft and panel upgrade that has prompted me to award these fellows my Gold Award. ...Bear!

Henschel HsP 75 Heavy Fighter

FS2002 Aircraft

Click for full size image

During the dark days of World War II, nearly all combative nations (Axis and Allies) were busy designing and building newer, faster, bigger, and heavier aircraft, but none took as much risk in their designs than did the German designers. The Henschel Aircraft Company took two Daimler Benz DB610 engines and mated them end to end (and developing almost 3,000 hp), then with this power-house of an engine driving counter-rotating propellers in a pusher airframe design, they had an aircraft capable of just over 420 mph in level flight. Having a rear mounted swept main wing (no horizontal stabilizer), forward mounted canard winglets, and a vertical fin pointed down rather than up, the Henschel Hsp75 was clearly a design ahead of its time. This is not a fictional aircraft&#it really did exist—but it never made it much beyond the prototype stage, as the jets over-shadowed it.

Steven Robinson has, using Gmax, designed an outstanding example of this obscure aircraft and it features all that FS2002 and Gmax allows, plus a bit more. This FS aircraft is fully animated (even compression struts and opening-closing canopy) and Steven has included 3 different paint schemes (one is a fictional Lara Croft air racer paint scheme) along with the original Gmax files. Steven has also included a custom panel, 3D dynamic virtual panel, custom sounds (actually the sounds are really very good), and special effects (hot exhaust flames).

Click for full size image

The handling (FDE) is also kind of interesting, in that it is rare that you can jump into an FS aircraft and simply taxi out to the end of the runway, just as easily and as realistic as in a real aircraft (most FS aircraft simply don't taxi very well or very realistically), but this aircraft taxis very well and the view from the virtual cockpit is also the best way to taxi (the view forward and down is excellent from the virtual cockpit). On takeoff you'll notice a tendency to pull right, this is an effect caused by FS not being able to understand a single engine with counter-rotating props and 3,000 hp! Once in the air though this aircraft is stable, powerful, and not full of weird surprises. My first attempt at approach and landing (when flying any new aircraft for the first time, I always practice my approach to landing at altitude) yielded another surprise in that this aircraft does react very much as a canard equipped aircraft should (I have flown a Vari-Eze in real life, so I've a little bit of experience with aircraft so equipped). As you approach stall, the nose will drop gently, then the canard takes over and the nose will level off; if you hold the stick back with no power, you will have this gentle proposing effect until you add power and you simply fly away.

Steven has put together a very nice package with his wonderful Hsp75 design that is nice to look at, easy to taxi and fly, yet gives you outstanding performance; but when you power up those mated Daimler Benz engines the sound is awesome! ...Bear!

Considering that there are many more aircraft uploaded every month into the AVSIM library than anyone can ever hope to download, install, and fly (them all that is), so it becomes very difficult to know which file to choose and which to pass over. My monthly picking of available downloads is designed to weed through the piles of new files for you and then to pick 10 to 20 that are noteworthy (in my opinion) and occasionally I will put my Bear Approved stamp on one of the better files and if I should happen to run across something really extraordinary, it (the file) just may be subject to receiving my Bear Gold Award.

Click for full size image

This file, Francisco Sánchez-Castañer's ATR 42-500, is one of those truly outstanding files that sometimes it seems my Gold Award just isn't enough. This aircraft proves that high quality and freeware can be had in the same aircraft, because everything is there; a beautiful custom 2D panel, fully dynamic 3D virtual panel-cockpit, custom sounds, beautifully designed exterior with fully animated components (including dual opening doors and stairs) and it is obvious this aircraft was designed with Gmax as noted by the reflective textures. This aircraft does require that you have the Professional Edition of FS2002 installed to function properly, but other than that, this aircraft is as near perfect as you could hope for and you commercial guys might want to take a look and see what your competition is! ...Bear!

Sandro has taken one of Project Opensky's 747-123s and modified it, including adding the Shuttle, to the specifications of the early trans-continental transport method when the Shuttle landings were still being done at Edwards AFB, California. Edwards was no longer used after STS-20 or there about and the returning Shuttles began using the Shuttle landing facility in Florida, so the NASA modified 747-100s were no longer needed.

Sandro has combined two already existing freeware packages to bring back the rather awesome sight of the Shuttle mounted on top of the giant Boeing 747! I personally have witnessed these early Shuttle transport aircraft, taking off from Edwards AFB, and believe me it was something to see! Last month (July), Heather Sherman uploaded her first version of the Grumman Duck, which was a basic makeover of a Grumman Duck designed by the late Tom Schaad for FS2000 and Heather's version included modifications for use in FS2002 along with additional repaints. What Heather and the DDG have now done is nothing short of astonishing and I feel this is now one of the most delightful uploads I've had the privilege of using for some time. (the Duck Design Group is made up of at least 28 additional people, so be sure to read through the documentation to see who was involved at making up the DDG and at assisting Heather)

With addition of even more repaints, sounds by Mike Hambly, an 8-channel radio that plays big band songs of the 1940s era, dynamic and highly realistic appearing exhaust flames, a greatly improved FDE, waterland water effects added, a working windshield wiper, and then of course, there's 'Lulu'! For those of you that missed the movie 'Space Cowboys', Lulu is a dash mounted dancing hawaiian girl!

Click for full size image

The new liveries include; authentic WWII paint and markings, Bush Flyers Unlimited colors, Navy Blue, a tribute to Mel Blanc and looney tunes, the 'Pink Lady', and my personal favorite, 'The Star-Spangled Duck'! I did think the pink smoke was a bit much, but I'll give that one to Heather....hehehe!

To date there have been more extraordinary and unusual uploads for FS2002 than anyone could have hoped for or imagined and considering all the available uploads covering just about every jetliner, propliner, military aircraft, warbird, or GA aircraft that have ever been made—it was about time something came along for the sheer fun of it. Now don't get me wrong because I think that all the aircraft that have been uploaded into the library are great, but it was a real joy to download a file that was simply designed to just be delightful and fun to fly, and I personally want to thank Heather and the DDG team for their hard work, so Heather and the DDG's 'Duck' get my Gold Award for providing one of the very best uploads this summer! ...Bear!

Over the last few years, Mike Stone has been very busy designing aircraft for Flight Simulator and this isn't the first time that I have noted two different aircraft from Mike that has been uploaded in the same month. Mike has stated in the forums that he most certainly prefers to work with designing the heavies (he released his Lockheed L-1011 and Airbus A320 earlier this year, plus he is about to release his 757 as well) and Mike began his August uploads with an excellent example of the Boeing 727-200! This download includes a custom panel and the single file includes multiple liveries: Alitala, Air France, Condor, Eastern, and Piedmont. (I would strongly suggest installing Richard Probst's latest panel upload; rp727pn3.zip, which is also one of my Gold Award winners this month) If you prefer another livery, then there is no need to worry, as I believe Mike's 727 upload has prompted more repaints of an FS aircraft than just about anything I've seen lately! This an outstanding design of Mike's and he certainly continues his tradition of outstanding FS aircraft design quality. [Editor's Note: The current file, sb7223.zip appears to have replaced the file upon which this review is based, sb7222.zip]

Click for full size image

Again using Gmax, Mike has also uploaded an aircraft right off my personal wish list, with his Grumman G21 Goose! It hasn't been since the early days of FS98 that anyone has attempted to design the Goose and I must say that Mike's version is easily far more than I could have hoped for. As usual, Mike included the base textures, so that anyone can do their own repaints (why even I got into doing textures using the default Windows MSPaint program to produce some basic repaints) and like his 727, there have been nearly 30 different repaints uploaded into the AVSIM library. As with his 727, Mike has included a basic panel, but Dorian Davis took a FS98 goose panel, originally designed by J.L. Stubbs, and modified it for use in FS2002 and Mike Stone's G21 Goose.

This is the first time that I have awarded anyone a double Gold Award, but in consideration of Mike's two excellent FS Aircraft uploaded in August, I felt it necessary to award each of his efforts separately! ...Bear!

This is (as Dimitri states in his readme file) his final update or version of his Tupolev Tu-95 'Bear'! During the long years of the cold war, it was the Soviet 'Bear' that become the symbol of the Soviets whereas the B-52 best symbolized the Americans. Dimitri's latest (and seemly his last) Tu-95 is easily his best; with fully animated parts, counter-rotating propellers, realistic external texturing, custom panel, and custom sounds this is a true standout among the many FS aircraft uploaded last month.

Click for full size image

My attached screenshots here are of the 'Bear' at Yelsevo AB near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Siberia, Russia. I point that out for two reasons, one; the Soviet Tu-95s flew out of that air base and secondly; I was one of the very first Americans to have been issued a Visa to visit there (a few years ago), following the collapse of the Soviet Union. We all have our list of favorite aircraft to fly in Flight Simulator and considering that I have nearly 1,000 different aircraft on my harddrive, it's interesting to note that of my top 10 personal favorites, this is one of them. This FS version of the Tupolev Tu-95 'Bear' looks, sounds, and feels great and I'm now going to give Dimitri my Gold Award for his finished work! Thanks Dimitri! ...Bear!

Tom Woods has put together a photorealistic panel for the Jetstream 41 and his panel (2D only) is designed to display a digital integrated flight control system and all engine gauges, which are functional as well. It also gives you a choice of arc or rose for the directional display and of course he took advantage of the default GPS. Included with the panel is a Gmax designed Jetstream 41 that includes animated components (rolling wheels, working suspension, etc.), a revised aircraft.cfg file, and is painted in the livery of United Airlines.

In general I found this file to be a bit rough around the edges, but for those that are looking for a pretty fair example of the JS41 with a photorealistic panel, this file just might be for you. ...Bear!

Don Moser (Alaska by Don) has been a regular scenery designer and aircraft repainter for some time now and of course his specially has been sceneries or aircraft repaints involving Bush Country flying. Unlike his sceneries in the past, Don has moved up another notch with his latest scenery package, as he now uses the latest in photorealistic macros and includes dynamic scenery effects as well.

This latest package from Don includes 10 separate sceneries across the island of Kodiak, including the USCG base near the town of Kodiak; and he has also included the LAGO Soundscape files for those that have that program installed. Don also packed in a repaint texture set for Mike Stone's Grumman Goose in a beautiful reflective and polished aluminum look, in the livery of 'Miss Kodiak' (Alaska Bush Charters). This is a complete package for the Kodiak Island and frankly I believe it is Don's best work to date!

Because Don's package is somewhat unique and is complete (10 site sceneries, FSSoundscape files, and the Goose repaint), I am awarding Don my Gold Award! Well done Don! ...Bear!

Grumman has been building aircraft nearly as long as Boeing aircraft and it is nice to see that Grumman has been very well represented in Flight Simulator. Of their (Grumman's) civilian amphibious line, the Albatross, Duck, and Goose have both been previously designed (Gregg Pepper, Heather Sherman, and Mike Stone) and I was hoping that someone would fill the gap between the Goose and the Albatross with the Mallard.

Click for full size image

Grumman had a lot of success with their Albatross, Duck, and Goose designs (mostly because the military used them), but the Mallard was less than successful with their intended market group, which was directed at the business or executive flyer-owners. Chalk's Airline (the livery this FS Mallard is painted in) did have a couple of Mallards in their stable, but it never really was a highly popular aircraft and only very few were built. Gary, FSAviator, and Dave have captured the look and feel of the Mallard and I do highly recommend it for those of you that enjoy the classic amphibians. ...Bear!

Microsoft has had a default helicopter since the days of FS98 and over the years there have been more 3rd party helos developed that you can ever download and use, but with FS2002, it seems that MS somewhat dropped the ball. By that I mean that the flight modeling and aircraft configuring was left pretty much to what was available in FS2000 and with some of the fundamental changes in FS2002, a few items were omitted or forgotten about concerning helo operation. Antti has successfully worked around these difficulties and has incorporated many unique ideas into one package, many ideas that most designers claimed weren't possible to do. Like for example retractable landing gear, working 4-axis autopilot, or the fact that Antti designed his helo with two engines (which the Dauphin has in real life, but FS 2002 doesn't allow for them in their helicopter configurations)!

Click for full size image

Using Gmax, Antti has now released his version 1.1 of this outstanding aircraft and it is this aircraft that I would suggest the FS design team at Microsoft take a long serious look at. Despite the obstacles, Antti has put together one of the most realistic aircraft ever for FS2002, realistic in appearance, panel-cockpit appearance and functions, and most importantly – its flight characteristics. There were some bumps in the road for the earlier versions of Antti's helo (getting it to work properly on all system configurations for example), but those problems seem to be behind him now and this version seems to be as near perfect as is possible, within the limitations of FS2002. Antti did not included any sounds with his upload, but he does give a short tutorial (readme file) on changing the file names so that the sounds from another favorite helo of yours will work here (I suggest you use the sounds from last month's Aerospatiale SA.365C1 Dauphin 2 by Uplink Productions, filename: up_air491.zip).

For me not to give Antti my Gold Award would be a crime, because among the hundreds of aircraft available (3rd party), this truly is one of the very best FS aircraft available, payware or freeware! Outstanding work Antti! ...Bear!

In a bit of move away from Flight Simulator, August also marked an upload of a file for MSTS into the AVSIM library (this route and activity pack is an exclusive upload here at AVSIM) that I just couldn't pass over with making note of it. Richard (Rich) Garber has been designing MSTS route and activity packages (freeware) for some time (his prior work was East Metro RR) and this latest build of his Ohio RR route is now up to version 9.1.

The amount of work involved in designing a complete route in MSTS is one thing, but to do it in a fashion that is superior to the default versions from the MSTS design team, well that's something else. Not only has Rich included a very highly detailed and complete route (based on a real world rail route through Ohio from the 1940s era), he has managed to include rolling hills with distance forests and wide green pastures, complete towns and villages, and people—yes people are now standing at the various train stations throughout, cool!

At a total download size of 82,464Kb, this 4 file package includes over 100 miles of highly detailed rail route, a complete set of custom painted locomotives and freight cars along with their consists, 15 activities & 12 tutorial activities (developed in partnership with Leith Platten), and a complete Ohio Rail Manual (PDF file) with 5 mp3 foot stompin' Blue Grass tunes so you listen to the proper music while running the rail across Ohio!

Richard Probst is no mystery to those of us that have been flying any of the Boeing aircraft in Flight Simulator. It was Richard (along with design partner Chris Arington) that had previously designed Boeing 727 and 707 panels (best known as the CARP panels) for Flight Simulator, starting some time ago with FS98—Richard and Chris were providing some of the very best in freeware panels and with each subsequent edition of Flight Simulator, their panels were updated or modified for use in FS2000 and FS2002 (mostly by other panel designers).

Click for full size image

Now what we have is a completely all new 727 panel design from Richard and it is truly a new landmark in 2D panel design. Just when the rage is for the dynamic 3D virtual panels, Richard reminds us that the old tried and true 2D panel is still superior in many ways. With authentic working systems, unique panel sounds, photorealistic subpanels, full cockpit (authentic) views, and even a short height landing panel (referred to as a VFR landing view), why even the auto-pilot (Sperry SP-50) is true to its origin and works exactly as it was designed. You'll also find that the fire handles function correctly right along with the FD-108 flight director, but don't look for auto throttles or speed control, because those aircraft (727s) didn't have them! It is freeware panels of this quality that will make the commercial guys rethink how they can justify charging any price for theirs! This panel more than rates my Bear Gold Award and it almost seems that my Gold Award is not nearly enough! Absolutely outstanding work Richard! ...Bear!

With this panel download, Paul has also thought to include a Project Freeware BAC 1-11 (Bahamas Livery) that has had the FDE designed by Ron Freimuth, which makes for an outstanding package. Paul once again receives my Gold Award for his outstanding work. ...Bear!
