During the second week of September (8th through the 14th) the total number of uploaded files dropped a bit, but the quality of those that were uploaded was absolutely outstanding. One of the FS aircraft uploaded has prompted over 13,000 downloads to date (plus an additional 12,000+ downloads for the repaint files), which has got to be some kind of record! This was a good week for some choice files, so you might want to take a look at what I found right here!
With the outstanding FS aircraft like the Dash 7 and the POSKY CRJ-200 being uploaded on the same day as this aircraft, it seems that everyone apparently overlooked it. Jose Mena and Bejae Taylor have modeled a pretty decent example of the Saab340B in Pan Am Express billboard colors. Completely designed using Gmax this aircraft has most of the standard animations and Gmax textures, but Jose and Bejae did rely on the default panel (Learjet) and sounds (Kingair); suitable replacements are available with a library search.
In general I do like the work of these two fellows and I know there are a number of individuals that have been looking for a good example of the Saab340 for their collection. ...Bear!
Bill Molony has only released a few scenery add-ons to date (other files he's released include Stone Mountain, GA and Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria), but his sceneries are all quite interesting and frankly, quite well done. Bill's latest release, 'Atlanta Motor Speedway', brings much more to the experience of flying in this area, particularly if you have installed his scenery, Atlanta Skyline, which was uploaded into the AVSIM library last month. Using real world photographs to develop the building and-or structure textures, everything is very real-world like. Although Bill has titled his scenery 'Atlanta Motor Speedway', it in fact also includes the regional Air Traffic Control Center and several buildings at the nearby Tara Field airport (shades of Gone With the Wind).
Bill's Atlanta Skyline and Atlanta Motor Speedway sceneries add over 100 buildings and structures to the Atlanta downtown and surrounding areas and I believe any of you that fly along the Eastern Seaboard of the USA will find these scenery addons to greatly enhance the experience of flying in this very popular area. Well done Bill! ...Bear!
Bill Melichar just keeps cranking out one set of beautiful island sceneries after anotherfirst he started with the Hawaiian Islands and then he moved south to French Polynesia and the Society Island Group (Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, etc). Bill has a real knack at designing these island paradise style scenery add-ons and his trademark soft dusk lighting really creates a feeling of warm tropical breezes and warm water lagoons. The Huahine airport (Huahine Island) is only a short hop over from Papeete (Tahiti) and Bill is really beginning to round out a complete package of sceneries for each of the major islands among the beautiful Tahitian islands. Absolutely excellent scenery Bill! ...Bear!
Honorable Mention! During the second week of September (8th thru 21st), two of the finest examples of freeware aircraft designs ever, were uploaded into the AVSIM library. The two following files have prompted over 30,000 downloads in less than 3 weeks between them (not counting the repaints) and these aircraft would easily achieve 4+ AVSIM Stars had they been commercial releases, which easily qualifies them for my Gold Award.
de Havilland DASH 7 A full Gmax designed and animated example of the DASH 7, with sounds by Aaron Swindle. No 3D virtual panel, but the quality of the 2D panel makes up for it. A solid Gold Award winner from Milton Shupe, Scott Thomas, Joao Paz, and Team 7!
South African Express Canadair CL-600 RJ-200BER The boys at Project Opensky are really a class act and their latest release is a prime example of the skill the designers in the Project Opensky group possess! The list of unique features of this incredible upload are too many to mention (dynamic 3D virtual cockpit, Gmax animation, opening doors with stairs, reflective textures, unique night lighting, and on and on), so this FS aircraft certainly is another solid "Gold Award" winner!
