Luckey's Landing scenery is included in the download page for the the companion Cessna 120). It is situated near Bangor, Maine in the US, and incorporates many features. There is good documentation included in the zip that explains how to get this set working. Make sure you get the update for the scenery as well. If you already have the "Luckey's Landing" scenery, the update will take away the tree lines, and replace them with individual trees. It will also help with frame rates.

There is an abundance of aircraft and buildings at the landing. The area is quite large in size; there is plenty of room for the C-120 wheeled version to take off and land. The detail of the buildings is great, as you can see from the hanger in the picture. As the sun begins to set, the lights on the cabin illuminate—yet another touch to the realism. One really neat feature Tom has added is the animated aircraft that flies around the area. At first I was taken by surprise, and couldn't quite work out what exactly it was. Eventually it came in to land and stopped by the docking platform. Now isn't that a nice touch!

The Finalists ...

Well, this year the Scenery category was certainly dominated by the commercial offerings—so you may want to head over to our Commercial Scenery section for those. It seems that scenery development, particularly in the FS2000 environment, is just too time consuming for most freeware developers to offer – perhaps excepting local airport sceneries "Bearracing" and "Tailhook" often cover in AVSIM's "Weekly Top 5" mini-reviews. So the number of large scale freeware sceneries released this year was pretty much limited compared to previous years. Two of my personal favorites of this year's freeware offerings I do recommend are Gary Widup's Denver International Airport. and Christopher Gilbert's Orlando International Airport.

We should note a very ambitious project we didn't have the opportunity to review by year-end: the just-released "The Netherlands 2000" which is sure to be a contender in next year's Bravo Zulu Awards. Don't miss AVSIM's "The Netherlands 2000 Preview" for a preliminary description and some amazing screenshots!

Of the several freeware sceneries we reviewed this year, unfortunately only Tom Constantine's Lucky's Landing scenery met our minimum 4½ star Bravo Zulu selection criteria. However, please see TerraScene for Fly! – a mesh generation based scenery development tool – in the Flight & Navigation Utilities section.
