  1. Something to consider regarding performance. The files being read from the drive are rather small, so thinking in terms of what large-file sequential-read performance is for a given drive (some approaching 200MB/s), well, you probably won't attain anything close to that for this application. You might try to establish a baseline, when launching XP, look at what throughput you are currently getting from the drive itself (use a free program like HwInfo64 which captures the min/max/avg). For my system, ortho reading peaks at 30MB/s. So at 1Gb/s network speed (of which you'd expect between 110 and 120 MB/s), you'll still have plenty of bandwidth available. My tests are done on a WD Red 5TB 5400 drive. Cheers. -- Greg
  2. I agree with CarlosF...extra RAM (starting at 16GB) won't buy you anything in the FPS area. I believe his explanation is correct. Also, DDR3 won't transfer to your next system (you'll need DDR4) so save the cash for your next motherboard (about the same cost at the lower end). That's my strategy. And it doesn't hurt to have your swap file assigned to your SSD(s).
  3. To add to Jim's response about how it works in 11. It mostly works fine, I haven't found any major issues. The one issue is that engines are much more powerful than they were in v10. Taxiing can be a challenge, but in-flight you can go a bit faster.
  4. That's exactly the problem. This bug was introduced around 10.5x so it has been broken for quite a while and I asked ben last september when this would be fixed. He made it sound like it was a rather large issue. But it used to work fine. So when we build a custom runway texture to better resemble the runway at the airport being modeled and set the default runway to transparent (transparent is useful because XP still manages all the runway lights), XP AI looks at the airport and says in the log (when logging for AI is enabled) something like there is no runway long enough. I've tried overlaying non-transparent runways but ran into some other issue with that, can't recall at the moment what it was. Hoping it gets fixed soon.
  5. Just as a follow-up to my early post stating "confirmed"...I may not have been having an issue, my test was very basic and really didn't confirm anything. I checked two locations including where I live when it was overcast but with XE showing clear skies. Assumption was XE was having an issue...have no idea if that was true or weather reports were delayed or something else. Haven't seen it since...and I did check the log and it was working. When the server is down (happened once during a maintenance period), XP gets angry and crashes. For me XE was money well-spent.
  6. I used to have steam for v10 but the new digital download option has been great. I can't comment on DVDs but that seems like a static option whereas with the digital download, if they make scenery changes (which they did recently) I don't know how you'd get them with the DVDs. That said, Steam should provide the same data as the digital download and since you've paid for that I'd try to make it work. If you can't figure why it's doing that, drop them a support ticket and see if they can get you fixed up
  7. I would say again, missing scenery tiles do cause XP to crash. I checked my log file and I have the download 404 failure in mine as well (also use xenviro) so it's not that. I do not have the SASL errors. Googling they may be related to sound issues with certain aircraft.
  8. Confirmed...but the servers may not be down...certainly serving up clear skies either way.
  9. Nice going! We've seen that happen before with bad scenery tiles. When an overclock is bad, it doesn't just crash an application (I mean, it's possible) but what normally happens is you get a BSOD. And if intel didn't want you to overclock they wouldn't sell "K" versions of the chips with the unlocked clock and utilities for tuning and testing such settings. Granted they were sort of forced into the former position since there were plenty of work-arounds, but they didn't have to build utilities for such support. -- Greg PS - Another thing that will cause XP to crash (and fortunately this is rare)...if xEnviro servers are off-line...I think this happened to me just once.
  10. OK, somehow I missed that. If it were me I'd try to get the scenery tiles sorted out via re-install or try flying in a different area.
  11. Earlier you stated you were not overclocking. Now you say you are?
  12. Actually, that's not true. Prime95 does test memory as it compares output with pre-defined solutions. The GPU is not overclocked on most systems so that is moot, but that can be done with other tools independently unless you're also overclocking system busses. I've had memory failures (when overclocking RAM) using Prime95 that did not show up using tools like MemTest86. Thanks. UPS's don't generally do that function. Mine is offline until power is interrupted. They're good to have if your local power company is giving you fits, but it's not going to make an unstable system stable.
  13. It's a tedious process and there are plenty of tutorials on the web for this. There's a learning curve and quite a bit of trial and error. Also, some hardware changes may be necessary as far as cooling goes depending on how your rig is set up. If you bought the computer pre-built I wouldn't attempt it. If you built it yourself, then you probably have enough knowledge to search out the specifics for the CPU/motherboard brand, etc. that you have, make the necessary bios changes, etc. That would be possible if the PC has an unstable overclock...though unlikely because installing is not taxing the system at all...it's just copying files. A normal system boot would certainly be more taxing.
  14. Missing scenery tiles can cause XP to crash...these messages seem suspect. Bad install...? 0:03:39.329 I/DSF: Warning for missing scenery file: +40-070 0:03:39.329 I/DSF: Warning for missing scenery file: +40-072 0:03:39.329 I/DSF: Warning for missing scenery file: +42-070 0:03:39.329 I/DSF: Warning for missing scenery file: +40-069 0:03:39.329 I/DSF: Warning for missing scenery file: +40-071 0:03:39.329 I/DSF: Warning for missing scenery file: +42-069 OP said he is not overclocking. Though I tend to agree with @westman as once you have a stable overclock you should be fine. Otherwise, it's not a stable overclock. I don't see XP stressing my system as much as tools like Prime95...based on CPU usage and temperatures. -- Greg
  15. Thanks Ryan. The problem is that higher resolution textures and 3D edges will cause more shimmer/jaggies (aliasing) than low resolution (fuzzy) textures or ones that have fake 2D edges. Everything is a trade-off and judgment is required when building scenery. I usually opt for 3D when practical especially if it's on objects placed where you might casually get close to (i.e., taxi past, park in front of, etc)...this way it doesn't get fuzzy and lose resolution and helps the whole immersion thing (also get nice ambient occlusion baked shadows for the textures). Example at SNA is the commuter terminals at each end of the main terminal section. If you look at the windows, they are inset and the frames are 3D and protrude. At distance, they shimmer...but as you pull up to them on the ramp, they look...well...3D. Nothing fuzzy. The windows in the long section of the terminal are high resolution 2D textures...they do not shimmer...but they will get fuzzy if you zoom in close. I haven't tried a 4K monitor here, but on a 2560x1440 with 4AA and still some shimmering, though it's not too distracting. The size of the monitor matters too...I'm at 27". Pixel density is the key. You might try a couple settngs in this article explaining the various methods to reduce them. https://www.lifewire.com/antialiasing-pc-games-831764 Also, there is no real difference between building scenery for XP 10 or 11 except that there are now more texturing options available with 11 with reflection and "metalness". The building of objects is identical. Hope that link helps...I agree shimmering can be very annoying. Hope this helps. -- Greg
