Migrating FS9 from XP 32Bit to Windows 7 64Bit

Recommended Posts

OK, there is a major issue of conflict which will not be resolved through this medium - sorry!

Some of you may know of Microsoft's collaboration with Laplink PCmover for corporate users who have to transfer from XP to W7 or 8 (8.1) and that corporates do not accept the issues with W8 (8.1) and are reluctant to move OS, etc.

The decision, here, was to move temporary to W7 prior to W9. This itself does not pose a problem - or what we, Laplink and MS had thought. The conundrum is this: The XP computer is 'version francaise' and transferring to an English language OS - it corrupts certain elements that cause major issues and, alas, placing certain software that becomes corrupt and this includes placing FS9 as we have been attempting to do for the past solid 24 hours!

The laplink is reversible to delete all the files/folders it transferred, etc, but there are remnants that cannot be removed. Unfortunately this means that FS9 cannot be installed at present and move folders across.  It will have to be not only a clean install, but every aspect of my setup here has to be re-installed manually.

Not a happy bunny at present, but on the upside, it allows me to install as I would like it now, A LIGHT VERSION! I am currently organizing a full motion B747-400 for delivery later this year if planning permission is authorized, Will provide details when contracts have been signed off.

Dillon, I will respond on the thread topic when I am in a position to do so.

Thank You and Take Care.

Sounds like major things you guys are trying to do.  I'd love to see your setup when your done.  Also if your starting from scratch you may as well look at the best we have to offer now and that's Lockheed Martin's P3D v2.

Dillon, the FS9 issue in its own context is an historical one. Overall its a corporate issue changing from XP to W7 and has nothing directly to do with FS. It is just that FS9 has been installed on the same computer since 2004, which the computer in question just happens to have FS9 on it. The down side is that my FS9 is a victim of the change by way that it is on a French operating system!

Anyway, now in my sixties and flew in the 1960s in the military, I travel globally and fly very frequently. I am purchasing commercially a B747-400 full motion simulator. As I live on an island, planning permission is not straightforward, nor the power supply requirements. I cannot house it at my local airport.

Let you knoz how I get on.

Regards

Update! :Praying:

The external drive where I placed the FS9/W7 set up was, unfortunately, the same drive as the original FS9 that was attached to the XP computer in version francaise! This may have conflicted when the external drive was then connected to the W7 computer.

As the W7 computer does not have a 'D' drive, only the 'C', I recommenced as per Dillon's notes and uninstalled FS9 completely etc, etc. The new vanilla install is sitting at C:Flight Simulator 9 and has loaded and flown with the default Cessna 172  and now renamed with 'Flight Simulator 9New' .

I have now copied across the FS9 and placed theFS9. CFG in the required location, having renamed the original vanilla as FS9.CFGNew.

To ensure that there was no conflict with aircraft, as to my last flight on the XP machine, I ensured that no aircraft was mentioned in the FS9.CFG I copied across.

FS9 was loaded and the splash screen stayed on the screen for some time (30 seconds or so), but when it got to the point to select plane/airport etc, it disappeared off the screen. :O

I believe it has to be a simple solution, but what? Will the FS9.CFG hold the secret?

Any ideas please?

Put the new FS9.exe file back in place and re-run the large address aware patch.  It sounds like you may be using the wrong utility for large addressing the .exe file.

This is the application that I am using; 4gb_patch.exe  and having run it again still no luck. although the set up screen stayed a couple of seconds longer!.

If this is not the patch, which was from NTCore, is there a stronger version?

That looks like the right one.  Your issue is really weird because all of us have used this for both FSX and FS9 to work in W7 64bit.

Have now looked at this from the perspective of the flights in the Flight Simulator Files, in the My Documents Folder. I took the 'previous flight' from FS9 XP and copied it to the W7 Flight Simulator Files in the Documents Folder.

I launched FS9 and the splash screen appeared and remained for an eternity (1 minute) followd by FS9 opening and showing the loading progress bar with 'loading scenery objects 0%'. It did not populate further than 0% and closed itself down.

Well, that is further than all else we have tried - so is it possible to narrow the search for the issue?

Thank you.

I'll try to look more into this this weekend.  I'm pretty busy these days.  The issues you are reporting I have not heard of.  Since the release of W7 no has reported anything remotely like what your experiencing.  When things become this hard is when I start over meaning use a newer version.  FSX usually has these kinds of issues especially during the first five years it was on the market.  Today we have an option that would give you a bigger bang for your buck if your having ridicules issues with FS9.  For the type of solution your building FS9 is an old platform.  If the only other options was FSX then I'd say go with it.   I'll recommend again P3D v2.2 as that platform is being designed for more serious applications/solutions (Level-D sims, etc) for real world training.  If your having continued unexplained issues with products like FS9/FSX these days it's best to get something current as you have nothing to loose but a headache.

While appreciating your assistance, or anyone that provides the same, it has to be taken on an as and when basis, because that's what makes these threads a friendly place to turn to. I am pottering away at this end, because I want to understand why there seems to be a block in loading FS9 on W7.

I have FSX Gold still packed in its cellophane wrapping and it has been there since the date on the invoice (23/08/2012). As for Lockheed Martin I am an investor there and it is part of my US portfolio. I receive all the updated data from LM on the Prepar3D via a direct RSS feed, but it is not in my sights to use it, while I am planning the bigger picture for the B747-400 commercial simulator. That software will be the same as for BA, Quantas and KLM, etc..

Probably like you and a lot of other simmers here, FS9 has been built up over a lot of years and if it can be kept then so it should. FS9 obviously works on W7, but the nut has to be cracked here for more than just peace of mind. It can continue to be used on the XP machine, but not attached to the network/broadband for security purposes.

I have gone back to my 2005 archive Flight Simulator Files and tried loading from there, but still having the same issue!

For now I live in hope!

Regards

Agreed, I still use FS9 allot.  A little off topic, Guernsey looks like an amazing place to live.  I looked it up on Google Earth and honestly didn't know the place existed.

The biggest change is with the OS and the User Account control.
It's recommend that the FS9 program be installed outside of the %program files% area.

For best results, install in the root of the drive - eg C:\FS9, D:\FS9 etc.

Naw, the cats out the bag now.  We just need Aerosoft to develop some scenery for the area at the same time the rest of us can book some flights to go to the real world location (possibly hang out with you and get your setup working).  Next we all make suggestions around the web this is a great vacation spot next it'll be previewed on CNN's 'Parts Unknown'.

In the past year the runway was brought into line with international regs, while we now have our own plane registry starting with 2-xxxx. We have just had an A319 Elite register - probably the largest that can use the runway and empty!. I have asked for Dassault Falcon 7X but would be very restrictive on weight, etc. For chartering it is necessary to fly to France or the UK for long distance charters.

I have scenery for FS9 for the Channel Islands, but I suspect the commercial firms would probably not be interested in creating it.
