"Access denied" issue adding repaints to FSX aircraft.cfg?

Recommended Posts

I am installing aircraft to FSX on my new computer. While adding repaints with my old computer I had no issues saving the changes I made to the aircraft.cfg file, it always asked if I wanted to save the changes and I said yes, done deal.

Now with my new computer running windows 7 it asked if I want to save the changes I made to the cfg file and then when I hit yes a window pops up that says access denied.

There must be something I can change to allow me to make changes to the cfg but I have not got a clue how to do that. Can anybody instruct me? Thanks.

Most FSX users run with User Account Control disabled since it can disallow certain actions such as editing files and makes installations more prone to error. I would try disabling UAC first, and if that doesn't help try looking at the file permission for the cfg in question.

Yep you nailed it, UAC. Works great now. Thanks again.

...and then there are still folks who wonder why so many of us recommend installing FSX anywhere except in the default path... :He He:

If you would rather not compromise the safety of your PC you can always copy the file to your Desktop, make the edits, save, then copy back to the aircraft folder.

Joe

Some of us installed FS to a custom location outside of Program Files, run with UAC on and never have problems editing files or installing addons.

I have FSX on a separate drive, but still keep UAC off to avoid the constant alerts. But I can understand why some people might prefer to keep UAC on.

Well since you guys mentioned it I have to ask. What is the concern here, or what safety is compromised by not keeping UAC on? Thanks.

I'm a real daredevil. I've been running for years with UAC off and no anti-virus, but I am behind a firewall and don't do any Web based activity on my FSX rig.

This is Microsoft's explanation of what it does.  Basically an extra Firewall for Program Files.

I see, thanks for the link.

I guess I've been living on the edge running with UAC off and no anti-virus for the last 7 years. It could bite me at some point in the future though.

You guys mentioned some alternatives, however could I not just leave UAC on and then simply turn it off the when I add to the aircraft.cfg, and then turn UAC back on again?

If you Google search for "Windows 7 UAC on an off" you will get the above link plus others that you can

disable UAC for 1 program while keeping it on for the rest.
