California - North Coast Mountains

Recommended Posts

The flight plan is a modified version of a route we flew last year. Starting at Ruth California near the headwaters of the Mad River our route will cross the Mad River, Eel River, and South Fork of the Trinity River. The route is up and down over mountain ridges and features three full stop landings and one touch-and-go before heading to the Pacific Coast at Eureka. From there we proceed down Humboldt Bay to Fortuna, and then over the Lost Coast wilderness to Shelter Cove. The last leg will take us back inland to finish at Ells Field-Willits Municipal.

The route is 190 nm with 7 full stop landings and 2 touch-and-go landings.  All of the fields have hard surfaces and the final three have some lighting. The Cessna 182 Skylane, Piper Comanche, Beech Bonanza would all be good choices for this tour.

I have a spot vacant at 14:33 if that's OK. otherwise it means waiting until 14:37. Sorry for the inconvenience, your call IS important to us.

Now this is interesting, I have recently bought Murray and Rohnerville (KFOT).

And my wife and I spend a month in our RV touring much of this area in September-October, cruising along the Eel River (Redwoods Avenue of the Giants), AND later this afternoon, before the hockey game, I fired up FSX and flew all over this same area for about two hours.  What a coincidence.

"Short -n- Sweet" this time.

The group at T42 (Ruth) just before my BSOD, caused by my co-pilots dander clogging the CPU cooler. (from 11:00) Nick, Mike, Stew, Ron, Jeff and myself. All in Comanches except Ron in a RV-7, myself in a V-35B, and Josh (not shown) in a RV-7A. We also had Klas flying off-line in a Comanche.

Mike coming into the 1-Way, postage stamp sized, O16 (Garberville). Looking good.

SS_05Dec15_141035.jpg?dl=0

Ron at Garberville. This one was rather tough. Nothing like coming in with ~25 knot headwinds over a cliff. The low groundspeed & high headwinds caused a lot of "floaters".

Josh touching down @ Garberville.

SS_05Dec15_141356.jpg?dl=0

Another group shot. We waited here a bit as others sorted out elevation issues and a strange, nearly OOM as VAS was at it's limit.

SS_05Dec15_141854.jpg?dl=0

It's going to be a dark arrival at our final destination. Only 1/3rd there as the Sun is dipping.

SS_05Dec15_142808.jpg?dl=0

Stew in the ground effect, again with ~25 knot headwinds at KEKA (Murray). IIRC he went "Go Around".

SS_05Dec15_143749.jpg?dl=0

Ron at Murray with a "2 pointer", keeping "######ing betty" quiet. (the AOA indicator) Half way there and Sun giving us pink sky.

SS_05Dec15_145536.jpg?dl=0

Stew on his second try (successful) with Nick following closely.

SS_05Dec15_145657.jpg?dl=0

Nick giving us a "3 pointer".

SS_05Dec15_145733.jpg?dl=0

That's about it for light. On the way to 0Q5 (Shelter Cove)

SS_05Dec15_150911.jpg?dl=0

Ron on his way into Shelter Cove. Over the radio - I can't see it!

SS_05Dec15_151921.jpg?dl=0

He didn't see the runway until just above the ground requiring a last minute adjustment and a bunch of "oohs & aahhhs" over the radio. Then .....

SS_05Dec15_151950.jpg?dl=0

Nailing it.

SS_05Dec15_151952.jpg?dl=0

Nick just about touching down at O28 (Ells-Willits). The bright beacon and bonfire in sight. The beacon was a good sight to see but it didn't gaurantee locating the runway - at all.

SS_05Dec15_154401.jpg?dl=0

Jeff had that exact problem, over the airport without runway in sight while doing the RNAV(GPS) 16 approach. A go around and straight back to LEFOR got him in with no problems. In sight this time.

SS_05Dec15_155228.jpg?dl=0

Just a few feet above the ground... Again, very strong headwinds, bringing on the "floater".

Its getting harder and harder to attend, all this month I will have grand children visiting, helping out the parents and this past weekend was dedicated to shopping and wrapping and mailing parcels to points in eastern Canada and Boston.
