PFPX - flight plan from KIAH to KDFW, need help

Recommended Posts

Okay guys I need some help. I made a flight plan from KIAH to KDFW in PFPX... it gave me this route

BLTWY2 CFIED WHINY4

So I go to 'edit' just so I can get a breakdown of all the waypoints that it's made of.

Sigh I wrote a very detailed summary explaining my problem, but somehow it didn't save, sigh...

Basically can you guys check to see what I'm doing wrong. What flight level should I use in the FMC? It says FL320 in the flight plan, but KIAH-KDFW is about an 1hr flight. Seems kinda high. In the BLTW2 SID chart it says TOP ALTITUDE 16000, does that mean I will be flying at that level until descending into KDFW?

Should I be loading the exported route from PFPX by choosing CO ROUTE or ROUTE REQUEST in the FMC, whats the difference between the 2?

On the PERF INIT page there's an option on the FMS for PERF REQUEST, do I need to do this?

I notice that on my 1st attempt at flying this plan, that when entering in the transitions into my FMC, that during approach into KDFW, it reached a TD waypoint, and from then on it took my plane off path. On my second attempt, I left out adding in the transitions, and I was finally able to get my plane all the way down to the runway, although with a lot of speed problems, such as drag required, which I armed the speedbrakes/spoilers.... I was on the LOC/GS, and had my speed selectof set to 160kts, but my PFD still shows 239kts. Despite of what I did, my plane just wouldn't slow down. I thought that the plane was suppose to automatically follow the speed restrictions that are on the LEGS page until I touch down on the runway? Once I've captured the LOC/GS I have to manage the speed and altitude myself? I was trying to get the plane to AUTOLAND, but not sure why it didn't do it.

Also when loading fuel and payload into the PMDG 777. The information that I get from PFPX's flight plan. How do I know how much fuel to load? What do I need to look at? Is it the RELEASE FUEL? and also what value do I need to use for my RESERVE FUEL?

Once I enter in the ZFW from my flight plan into the FMS, that will take care of my payload values right? I'm guessing I load the plane up with 10,441kg of fuel, and for reserve i put 4.6? and 180,433kg for the ZFW?

I'm not sure your going to get someone with enough patience to answer all these questions as the answers are all available in both the PMDG manuals and in various YouTube tutorials. In a lot of the questions you posted over the past few days, I think it might lead people to believe that you don't want to read manuals and want people to hand walk you through a lot of things.

Having said that you answered your own question on fuel and payload in the last paragraph.

Not sure you would want to bother loading this as a Co Route as it only has one way point and would probably be easier to just enter CRIED and then select your SID and STAR and trim from there.

On the FL320, yes that's too high and the T7 probably won't even let you select that altitude. Check flightaware and you'll see that this will be flown in the low 20000 feet flight levels.

On the procedures I'm not going to spend time on that since its in the T7 manuals.

I'd suggest you fly the T7 tutorials and watch some of Kyle Rodgers YouTube videos on the T7 and PFPX.

Thanks for your suggestions, but I've done those PMDG tutorials numerous times already, and watched a ton of videos on youtube. I still don't understand some of this stuff.

The tutorials are easy to follow, but when it comes to me, it's just always confusion on certain things. Only if every flight can be so simple and straight forward as the PMDG 777 tutorial. No vectors, just a simple flight plan straight into Dubai.

Not sure why you purchased such sophisticated addons that seem difficult for you. Jim was quite correct and maybe you need to simplify your flight sim experience. Maybe go back to basics and work your way up.

You can not beat the Aerosoft airbuses. Way easier for you to fly than PMDG. Even have checklists and a co-pilot to help you. Also very forgiving. You can have terrible landings and still make it to the gate unlike with PMDG where you would show crashed and flight end.

I recommend mastering these and the FMC's then switch to PMDG Boeings when you have a better understanding.

i was curious about this airport lately, the WHINY4 arrival is very sophisticated and features numerous very specific altitude and speed restrictions. when i tried it in the sim on 777 it required a lot of use of the speedbrakes and this will trigger the drag required advisory message that you saw. at the end it will end with you needing to take over with hdg control to get yourself to whatever runway you are using. frankly it is a very advanced arrival procedure to fly .. if you are not confident with setting up your approaches and transitions, going to one of the most complex and busy airports in the world is maybe not the easiest place to learn it hehe!!

i would suggest trying some simpler airports that have only a few departure or arrival procedures. at major usa airports many of the stars end in vectors these days, you might have better luck with some euro ones or trying smaller airports.

try to make sure you really understand each page in teh FMS and set them up because most likely something that isn't working was just a missed step along the way

I just finished flying this route to see the issues you encounter. I did not fly in P3D or PMDG but with the Aerowinx 747 simulator.

I loaded 270 tons with around 75 tons fuel. It was able to achieve FL320 leaving about 15 nm until TOD. Approach with landing on 13R went without any issues. The aircraft handled all altitude and speed restrictions without the use of speedbrakes. I did have some minor use of speedbrakes when slowing to 240 kts below 10000 but afterwards speed stayed in check. Approaching the FAF I was at 170 with gear down and flaps going to 20.

Just keep practicing and reading and watching. You will learn something each time you fly the route.

Good luck.

sgreen, so did you load up the exact same flight plan as in my screenshots? At which point did you hit the LOC/GS to capture them? Were you able to perform an AUTOLAND?

Where you enter in the Reserves in the FMC, it is XXX.X format. does this mean if I enter in 3.0, will that mean 3kg (I'm using kg vs lbs btw).

I would agree, especially after he said this in another one of his similar posts.

I want the entire process to be as automated as possible. Just have an app make me a flight plan, load it up into the CDU, and have the plane fly and land the entire route without much fuss on my end. That's my true enjoyment of flight simming for me.

I think he'd be better off just watching YouTube videos or using simple aircraft to slew around if he doesn't want to actually fly the plane or have an pilot input.

I respect his desires even though I don't understand why you'd want the plane to essential do everything while you just sit there and watch.

For his purposes, buying sophisticated aircraft and planners seems like a waste of money and time.

Yes.  I used the exact flightplan you posted.  The STAR does not directly lead you to a IAF to intercept the approach.  It ends at HILLZZ at 6000.  From there you will need to self vector yourself to the active landing runway if you do not have ATC.

In PSX the ATIS stated runway 13R was the active so from HILLZZ I flew a downwind heading of 315 about 10 miles abeam of the rwy.  Abeam the IAF I turned base then turned 100 to intercept the ILS.   Performed a LAND3 due to being at work with no controllers to use for PSX.

Unlike Europe approaches which lead you directly to the approach US approaches usually require some form of vectors to aquire the ILS.

Diving in at the deep end so to speak is always a big risk. Because there are steep learning curves regarding handling of the a/c, procedures and how to construct flight plans. With regard to flight plans you need to think of them in five ways.

1. Route A to B

2. Weather

3. Aircraft weight

4. Aircraft performance

5. Vertical profile

All of these factors affect how a flight plan is executed and have to be understood before your fpl begins to work properly.

Why are you asking about an Autoland?  If you fly using real world weather, Autoland won't be required for at least 6 months from now.

See my quote in a post above this. He said he wants the whole flight to be as automated as possible requiring as little input from him as possible. If auto takeoff was an option, he'd probably use it as well.

It's his choice but I feel like your cheating yourself by not learning how to fly the plane.

Okay.  He needs to update his database.  The route will require him to fly the Beree 1.  If he's using FSX, I suggest using 18R.  17C at DFW doesn't display the correct visuals.

I'm already using the latest AIRAC cycle already.

Jim, no need for those remarks. To each their own. If you can't respect others, don't expect the same in return.
