A good supplementary GPS for p3d 3.4.9+?

Recommended Posts

So i've finally got my VR setup working fairly well and the immersion is great.. but i'm thinking i may want to get a supplementary GPS for future flights.. granted i havent even dug in very far into the existing built in ones, i guess the g1000 etc.. or the one with a2a 172 (same maybe i forget)..

I've read people recommending the g650 and 750 from flight1.. are these fairly solid, no major fps hits?  Do they work easier, more intuitive than the stock ones or a2a stock ones?

Secondarily, which are more likely to be found in a real aircraft for training these days or maybe in the future.. or do learning pilots bring their own.. ie: would i likely see something like a 650/750 in the cockpit in the next 3-5 years if I jump to the real world again some day soon?

Curious for any input here.. so far, i was thinking of getting the flight1 750.

Thanks in advance

Don't get anything unless it says it is compatible with P3D v3.4 is my advice.

I'm finding that some aircraft gauges (or sometimes their sound effects) aren't working 100% in v3.4.9, when they did in earlier versions.  I'm still testing this - it's early days to check the detail of what's  working and what's not - but it seems that I now get odd effects with some add-on aircraft gauges.  Perhaps it's because I'm an IFR flyer who need the details to be right!  It has sure got complicated these days.

I have the GTN750 from Flight 1, and run P3D V3.4, and I have it working well with my Kodiak add-on from Lionhart  and Phenon 300 from Carenado (using Bert P's mods from this forum). I fly using IFR through the SE Alaska and Pacific NW from Orbx.

I am using the GTN750 versions of these aircraft almost exclusively.  Benefits include:

1.  Much better interface (touchscreen) compared to G1000.  I still haven't master the pages between menus and the page between menus options in the G1000, and the cursor seems to be unpredictable.

2.  The terrain avoidance system (TAWS) in the GTN 750 is very helpful since I'm often flying through clouds in the mountains.  However, can be annoyingly difficulty to shut up.

3.  When I select an approach, correct NAV frequency is selected for the runway and loaded.  Not sure if this happens with the G1000.

Some 3rd party aircraft  have some out of the box compatibility, some require mods.  I highly recommend.

I'm quite happy with the Flight1 GTN 750, the downside is you only get new Navdata databases when Garmin releases a new trainer version (I also could import database files from Garmin trainers which Flight1 skipped).

And Garmin does not include airports with runways less than 4000ft outside North America anymore with the trainer since the beginning of the year.

So I'm probably stuck with cycle 1513 (forever?), at least if I fly outside NA or give up smaller airports.

If there would be a way to convert e.g. the Navigraph data into the Garmin format that would be great.

So I can not recommend it 100% for everyone, if you need the recent cycles (e.g. because you fly online) that could be a problem.

But this is the only noteworthy problem I've encountered.

Thanks for these suggestions so far..

I guess i should have mentioned the other aircraft I use mostly..

A2A 172

A2A 182

Aerosoft Airbus/PMDG planes (i guess no real need here, use the ones that come with these for sure?)

Ants p92

Real Air Legacy (built in one just as good?)

RealAir duke

Carenado various (Phenom 300, v35b, 208b, c90, mooney 201, f33, malibu)

Twin Otter X

Realair duke

I'm guess i'm just wondering if any of these are redundant with the 750GTN.. guessing definitely useful on the a172/182 etc

The F1 GTN 750 and / or 650 in the Duke and Legacy is a fantastic combination. The stock Realair GPS is just basically a reskin of the default GPS.

The GTN 750 is fantastic

That's my personal preference

You probably won't find a 750 in a rental though

You will however find a 650

Other options are the F1 GNS 530/430W

GTN 650/760 is the best. Works with A2A, and pretty much any aircraft, and with P3D 3.4

I believe the RealAir Duke has compatibility with the GTN750 right out of the box

Yes, the turbine duke does.  The piston hasn't been upgraded for the GTN yet.

Well, at that rate i'm going it may be 10 years before lessons again, so by then they may have the 750 :D

Yeah i'm thinking ill get the 650 or 750.. i guess there is no combo, they appeared to be 50 each.

I guess noone would use them on a pmdg 737/747, not purists anyway right?  For me it would be for GA simming.

I'm not sure it would even work.  For fun you could try I guess.

If you want no impact on performance and full flexibility, go for an external solution: I run Foreflight (electronic flight bag for RW flying in the US and Canada) on my iPad which is connected to P3D with a program called "FSXflight" which simulates GPS signal. In Foreflight you have everything you need: moving map, route finder, all frequencies, weather overlay, hazard advisor, traffic, Synthetic vision....everything. Downside is the costs of course (199$ per year for the pro version).

Or you can buy the GTN750 from flight1tech, which is a standalone version of the flight1 GTN750. It can run on a separate computer with a touch screen...very nice and no performance hit at all, and no limitation on panels.

Same goes for the GNS530.

And last but not least: The super duper GPS solution: An external Garmin G1000 with hardware (flight1tech plus Emuteq) - if you can afford it. (Around 5k$ in total). But nothing gets closer to real flying, I use it for flight training.

That would be awesome to do in the 2D sense, but not so much for the VR experience which is primarily what i'm aiming at at this point (already sold off my saitek panels, hopefully not too hasty :) )
