I
promised Kyprianos Biris and Babis Peribolas some time ago to take up flying in
their beautiful country. I downloaded the Greek mesh scenery and various other
scenery files and airports and did a few test flights a while ago. Kyprianos was
kind enough to send me some tips on where to fly and today you can see the first
result of that.
It also gave me a chance to test-fly the new DC-3 by Jan Visser, Roy Chaffin and
Bill Rambow, the PH-DDZ in the DDA colors. It has been in Malta for some 10
years before it was acquired and subsequently restored by the DDA in Amsterdam
and the model will be shortly available from the major flightsim sites.
Have a look at the incredible detail, it even shows with my very modest old 16
Mb Riva TNT card !!
The flight I did here is one of several proposed, and there will be more to
follow. I took off from the big airforce base at Souda, Crete, to fly along the
northern coast of Crete to Sitia. I took the old DC-3 up to some 4500 feet for
the most part of the flight. There was a lot of turbulence (I use FSMeteo) and
since I usually fly the DC-3 manual (not on autopilot) it was good to be VFR.
Although the clouds came in pretty thick at times. Not being familiar with the
terrain, and wanting to make nice screenshots, I decided to come in from the
land side at Sitia. That was a mistake as it turned out, because there is a hill
at this side of the runway. And I was admiring the boats and harbor at Sitia
when turning on final, so I almost hit that hill. The landing was a bit of a
thrill this way and luckily the DC-3 is pretty docile and has good brakes, so I
was able to dive down just behind the hill, flare in time and apply full brakes
to get it stopped before dumping it into the sea at the other end. Next time I
will approach from the sea !
| and Francois for your info
this is the real Sitia harbor |

| Bad picture (found in the
web) looking West On top of town you can see the end of the runway (ladfill to gain as much length as possible) !!! The cafes in the main square is were we hangout in the summer when we go there :-) Only traffic visiting Sitia is the Do 228 of Olympic Airways and some PPL trainers from Iraklion & Souda The are curently constructing a new 1200 m rwy (visible in scenery) to accomodate regional turboprop airliners Yes the other side of the rwy end falls down the same steep as this side. Aircraft Carrier style !! Kyprianos Biris Athens, Greece |
