Ohe of our readers Phil Shaw has sent this VFR flight for us to publish. He has created a great VFR flight in the Super Cub 180.  His flight takes us through the Lake district which is one of the most beautiful scenic areas in the United Kingdom.  So, jump in your aircraft and see for yourself what you have been missing!

The Flight

We start our trip from Barrow-in-furness an airfield used as a gunnery training station during world war 2.

As you depart from Barrow turn NE and fly along the A592 the middle of the 3 roads leaving Barrow, one goes north, one south and then northeast along the coast, its the middle road we want heading towards the town of Ulverstone.

Keep flying along the road northeast just before the town of Ulverstone a road will join from the south.
The river Estuary will turn north to meet the road at the town of Greenodd, the road departing to the north will meet Coniston Water which you should be able to see in the valley if you look along the road (A5084).

Departing Barrow Looking North towards Coniston Windermere

As you cross over the town of Greenodd you should see a large lake the southern tip of which we are heading for the lake is Windermere and on its southern tip is Newby Bridge, turn north and fly up the lake.

----------------------------------------

Fly along the western bank so the eastern bank is in view, on the eastern bank at about the lakes widest point is the town of Bowness, to the north of the town you should see a fork in the road, the left fork continues along the shores of the lake the other heads of north, follow this right hand fork.

Kirkstone Pass Helvellyn and Grisedale Ullswater and Helvellyn M6 & A6 North of Penrith

The road we are following is the A592 over Kirkstone pass, the highest point is 2547 feet, so make sure you have enough altitude.

The next lake along our trip is Ullswater, as we approach the southern tip the high ground on our left is Helvellyn at some 3116 feet, as the road follows the lake round towards the northeast and the town of Penrith keep following it.

At Penrith we meet the M6 Motorway and the land will flatten out somewhat, fly north up the M6 towards Carlisle.
