AVSIM's VFR Flight Center  - News

Monday June 3rd 2002 NEW Its been a while since an update has been added to the site, thought it about time for some news.  Some of you may be using the new FSFlightMax software that has recently been released by John Hnidec.  Its an ideal tool for those of you who are VFR Junkies.  One of the features it provides is integration with real world aviation charts. The folks over at Aeroplanner have made available a superb offer aimed specifically towards the simulator pilot.  You can purchase 50...yes 50 charts for a very small price.  Used in conjunction with FSFlightMax, it opens a whole new world to you. Pop over and take a look, I am sure something will wet your appetite. To get direct to just the simulator charts click here

A new flight posted today...hurraaaayy !!! Aidan is back and took his Canuck 80 to make a trip in Alaska. Check it out on the front page !

And you are probably going to see more Alaska flights in the future since I am spending a lot of time in two virtual airlines, both of them Bush outfits in Alaska. I have added them to the Special Links section on the Simulation Links page of the site. They are Don Moser's Alaskan Bush Charter and the Bush Flying Unlimited company.

I have also been spending quite some time in their forums and in the Flightsim Veterans Club's forum. All great fun, but somewhat distracting me from the actual flying. And writing.

I am currently finishing my review on Lago's FS Scenery Enhancer, due out soon on AVSIM, and you can also read a report about it in Computer Pilot Magazine due out next month.

Stay tuned for more flights soon and thanks for having a look here !

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all !!!

Bit late, but I just returned from a skiing trip over X-mas and New Year.
Not much news yet on the VFR site I'm afraid. We did post Ken Peckham's first FS2002 flight. This is a little bit different concept than the one we started with. Ken has provided a very detailed written account of his flight and we invite you to use it as a 'route manual' to follow.
Hopefully this new year will bring us more time so we can bring YOU more flights.

One last thing I would like to draw your attention to are two great sites I subscribe to myself (and their forums): The first is the Flight Sim Veterans Club (FSVC) run by John Consterdine. It has a very extensive Tips & Tricks section for FS2002 and a friendly forum. You can find it here.

The other is a sub-site of Don Moser's Bush pilot site and it's called Alaskan Bush Charters (or ABC). It's a virtual airline without rules... a refreshing concept. Don provides a forum, some nicely painted bush aircraft, Alaskan airfields... and the rest is up to you. Just fly and file your report - umm, well, stories - on the Forum (Pirep). Have a look here.

Woops ! The VFR Center has been very, very quiet for too long. Reasons plenty for that. Not in the last the September 11th events. The effects of this crime have been truly incredible and have touched on so many people. Aidan has been sent off to somewhere, being in the British Forces. I myself have been tasked investigating an beefing up security in Europe for our company. And then FS2002 was released and it took 6 weeks of frantic testing and writing to give you the 8 part review ! Some other reviews, the new AER on AVSIM, and little bits and pieces of private life filled up the rest of the time.

But we have some news too. A few new links in the simulation links page. And we will be featuring a new item on the flights pages. Ken Peckham, aka Blowhole in the forums, will be providing us with a different way of flight descriptions. We'll post the first of such flights later this week, so stay tuned !

Look on all the pages...noticed something? Yup, a new logo. The AVSIM Educational Resource is a new initiative of AVSIM aimed at collecting all sites that in any way provide educational value to the hobby of flight simulation. The VFR Center is proud to be among the first to be included in this new venture. But have a look at all those other great sites too !! Everyone of them is worth more than one visit, I can assure you !!!!

Because of all this activity, and also because of the recent distressful events, I have not been flying much. So please bear with us for some new VFR flights.... it's just a matter of time :-)

New. Yes, but no news from me. Just silence after this mind boggling event in the US......

I use this space to convey my condoleances to all victims and their families.
And to all citizens of the free world. A free world that has lost a battle this week. A battle in the war of sanity and reason.

Fortunately history teaches us that we will always win that war, no matter how many battles we may loose. I just wished these attackers had studied their history a little bit better. They would have understood that this outrageous crime does not serve any purpose and will not bring any good to any of their misguided beliefs and goals.

Well, busy times as you might have gathered. 2 new flights added today, one by Aidan, flying in his favorite Alaska, and another FlyII flight in California from Chris.

I have been deeply intrenched in work on Abacus Private Pilot Training, doing the test and writing a review. The results will be posted on Avsim wthin the next few weeks.

I took down the link to Smart Groups because that didn't seem to work. We'll have to work out something else to get your comments.

Next thing on my agenda is adding new links to the links pages, and getting ready for the FS2002 review that I will take part in.

Finally! Vacation is over ! So back to work.... I saw from the statistics that some die-hard VFR fans still clicked on the site.. sorry for not putting anything new on lately, but it does not really work over a GSM connection <g>.

What do we have for you? First a flight in Latin America (our first !) brought to you by Peter Schues of Brasil. He flies one of the Tradewind DC-3's from Brasil to Venezuela. And he's added some interesting links too !! Go and have a look.

Second, a tour of the French Riviera in a Mooney. A flight I did a while ago, testing Olivier Bochu's addition for FS2000 in that area. I have also added a few links AND some real pictures of the area. I hope you like it.

Other news:
I am currently working on using a new web building software (Dreamweaver by Macromedia), so you might see some hicups from time to time in my web links. Sorr in advance.
I am also working on a number of reviews (now with the main TrainSim review out of the way).

And.... I made another real flight at the controls of a Jodel Mousquetaire.... I will post a report here on AVSIM within the next few weeks.

Keep visiting...more new flights are coming soon..... Francois.

Last week we published the first Fly! pictures. Today we have the first Fly!-II flight posted on the site. This was just a test flight touring the vicinity of San Diego and admiring the clouds. When I get to grips with flying this sim be sure for many VFR flight proposals to follow.

The other flight posted today is leads from Salzburg in Austria to Klagenfurt, Austria. This flight crosses my favorite mountain region, the Alps. I actually set out to fly to my friend Miro in Ljubljana, Slovenia, but got caught by the descending darkness, so had to land at Klagenfurt. Some beautiful scenery, also included links to scenery for both airports and the mountain mesh, and some links to the real world.  Enjoy !

Tuesday, June 26, 2001 Great news !!!!  Today we have uploaded two flights from a GUEST PILOT. From the outset we planned to have guest pilots contribute to this site and today we have the first volunteer helping us to expand!

Not only do we have a new pilot publishing, but also NEW PLATFORMS, i.e. X-Plane and Fly!

We are now working on providing a template that you can use in future to send us your best VFR flights! To  keep things clear, we want to use the same template for all, so our readers can quickly find and recognize flights. Stay tuned !!!!!

Monday, June 18, 2001 Not a new flight this time (although we have some lined up again for you later this week), but the announcement of the  VFR FC Group. This is a Smart Group that you can join to discuss, comment and ask questions about the VFR site and anything else related to this part of our hobby.

It is a 'protected group', that means only members have access. You can request to join by entering your e-mail address and click on 'Join', either on the front page or on the comments page. Hope to see many of you turn up. Francois

Tuesdsay, June 12, 2001 Fixed a few minor omissions and mistakes today and completed links on all pages. Still working on another flight which I hope to put up later today.
Monday, June 11, 2001 Yes, it has been quiet for some time. I was on holiday to my mountain hide-out. And when I came home I thought I'd quickly re-install FS2000 because it started acting up what with all my add-ons. Quickly...hmhm. It is still not back to where it used to be.. a lot of scenery not re-installed.

So, updating takes some more time these days. New is a flight in Holland, from Maastricht to Hamburg. Sporting a RNZAF C-130.

Also new is the start of the Photo Pages. I have included the index page to give you an idea of what will be coming the next months. Photo's of the real world, to do with aviation and/or scenery.

And I have been working on a few reviews.. one of which was published already (the Combat Squadron by Abacus).

I'm afraid the next few months are not going to be much better. I have a number of things coming up in the private area that will need time and attention......

Sunday, May 27, 2001 Several additions to the site. Two new flights to start with, one in New Zealand, using the excellent mesh scenery (150m) from Christian Stock. The other is over the Greek islands, using Greek mesh scenery from Babis Peribolas and the Greek Airfields from Kyprianos Biris. (there is a new release out today !).
The last flight also sports a nice military jet, very suitable to 'quickly' check out larger areas of scenery.
And talking about that jet... you reall ymust check it out. It flies beautifully and has some interesting cockpit features... recommended !!

There is also a new comment, with an interesting link included !

Off topic.. but have a look at my contribution on Avsim in the Contrails column... ;-)

Thursday May 17, 2001  Added two new flights from Aidan. One is in Utah, checking out the Big bend scenery and the other is a flight in France, from  Aulnat to Thalamy, looking around what the French mesh scenery of Raimondo Taburet does for that region.

Wednesday, May 9th, 2001  Added a new section to the Real Aviation page, called Classic Aviation. In it you will find links to museums and other organizations involved in keeping the history of aviation alive !

Wednesday, May 2, 2001 2 new flights uploaded, one in Switzerland, one in Greece.

Check out the headlines.... there will be a report on the Dutch FS Weekend and on our visit to the DDA in Amsterdam !!

Some flights that are in the pipeline:
  • a flight to Tromso
  • a tour along the French Riviera
  • a trip from Kodiak to Seward in Alaska
  • an ULV flight in Holland
  • a KLM flight from Nice to Frankfurt

Sunday April 22, 2001  We will be covering the Dutch Flight Sim Days at Schiphol Airport, Netherlands, next weekend for you. Watch Avsim for a full report on this major event !
Sunday April 22, 2001  Yes, Avsim has redesigned it's download library system. Which is good news for all of us! There is just one little problem... we use copies of library entries in the VFR Flight Center and now have to redo many of our pages to make sure they will link to the proper files. You might run into some link problems in the next few weeks while we are getting things changed. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience.
Sunday April 22, 2001  Both Aidan and I are back on base. Aidan has been helping with the Foot and Mouth Disease problems in the UK (unexpected), I have been on a family visit in Romania (planned). All is well and we'll be updating the site again starting today.

Wednesday April 11, 2001  Webmaster on Holiday

Yep, you read it correctly.. sorry... no updates for the next two weeks I'm afraid... but !!! Some great flights have already been prepared, so stay tuned, I am back on April 23rd !!!
Francois

Saturday April 7, 2001 New flights added, 1 in Alaska and 1 in Scotland

Also new additions to the Useful Files page..... some of our favorite aircraft !

Monday April 4, 2001
Since not everybody will have the (payware) FSNavigator 4, we have now included flight plans in the FSNavigator 3 format as well and will continue to do so in future. FSNavigator 3 was the last free version of this program and is still available (see our Useful Files page).
Monday April 2, 2001
Finally.... we have added the 'About Us' page so you can now read all about us and see our ugly faces as well.... access at your own risk !!
Monday April 2, 2001
New pages added... again, this is the beginning of something, so please be patient while we fill it up. New pages include the Hint & Tips (with excerpts from the Screenshot forum of Steve 'Bear' Cartwright's tips on clouds and screenshots), and Useful Files... here we will post links to much used add-on files and utilities.
Monday April 2,  2001
Another change as to the looks of the site. Ideas kept coming up and the navigation bar at the top of the screen just wasn't big enough. So I changed things around and moved the navigation bar to the left... with a lot more to click on !!!

Thursday 29 March 2001

More news... we will be adding pages (such as this one) with News, Your comments and experiences and we are also planning a Specials page where we could have things such as Military VFR flights, conducted in low-fly zones for instance. We have more ideas and plans than spare time, but we intend to make this a lively area of Avsim.
Thursday 29 March 2001

Here is the first news item since going live:  We have already changed the lay-out of the site ! Judging from all the reactions it is clear that the site will grow quickly, with the number of flights in different parts of the world increasing. After some experimenting we have come up with the concept of the world map, where you can choose the region you want flights from.

It will take a while before there are flights available of course, so bear with us....
