South Pacific Ocean (SPA) Basin Operations Center: Auckland, New Zealand (West of 160E)
The southern Pacific is handled from this base of operations. Roughly, 19% of annual cyclones occur in this region. The Australian/Southwest Pacific Cyclone Season runs from late October to early May. This center serves the northern and eastern coasts of Australia, along with the islands of French Polynesia, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Fuji and others. It is also a launching point for Antarctic weather research projects. (Papeete, Tahiti; Suva, Fiji; Pago Pago, Samoa)
