A New Phase

blog-0818016001328396456.gifIt came much faster than I had anticipated. At the ripe old age of 61, I am now retired. I woke up on Wednesday, February 2nd, a retired dude with no meetings, conferences, customers, or anyone or anything putting demands on me. Got up, fed the cats, and went back to bed. Amazing...

I suppose I will eventually adapt, but thinking of your "to do" list without a job to populate it takes a bit of getting used to. We'll see how long that lasts. I can certainly say that with four days of retirement under my belt as I write this, the hardest thing I will have to do is separate myself from whatever I am doing at the time and force myself to get up and walk or do something else physical. Sitting behind a computer (or worse, becoming an expert on day time soap operas) is a sure way to an early grave. And I am too early in my retirement for that to happen.

Anyway, I am looking forward to sharing this experience that many of you do.

Tom if part of your new phase is to stop the bush lawyers messing up would-be developers, esp of add-ons for FLIGHT and P3D then you have already started retirement well.

But if you are a healthy 61 you will find those firms that are worried by the cost of permanent employees will hire you quicker than a flash as a contractor or a casual. This shoves the employment costs on to the employee.

ps I retired at 71, now 73, not 100% fit, but still take my boat out - and ration my time at the computer much as my sim-addiction will let me.

Ian, thank you for your thoughts. I am not in tip top health - you know, rode hard and put away wet, as they say.

You and I share the same thought at least in regard to "bush lawyers". We'll see how that turns out... :)

I retired for medical reasons 10 years ago and spend 12+ hours a day on the computer. The secret to staying healthy is to avoid stress and don't put a mini-fridge in your computer room. :)

Minifridge is definitely out, but like you, I suspect I am going to be spending a lot of time behind the computer (and that has held true for the last three weeks or so of retirement). I feel I have to get disciplined about getting up and doing something physical... minifridge or otherwise.

Tom congratulations on retiring from Northrop Grumman! (Is that true?)

That's true (that I did both retire and that I retired from NG...)

Congratulations on your retirement Tom! If you remember me I'm a Charlottesville native (actually grew up in Crozet) so have been lurking on your blog for a while picking up on the Cville tidbits. Live next door to Melbourne FL now, did you ever get down here to the NG facilities during your time?

Anyway, enjoy your "leisure" time in one of the best places on earth! My better half and I hope to move home and maybe join you at TGIF or The Nook on the Downtown Mall in 3 years, 9 months, 16 days...

Tom, I retired a couple of years ago from UK hospital medicine. Since then I've not had a dull moment! To offset simulator flying time, I try to swim hard (800 m) x3 per week and on the other days to take a 2-3 mile brisk walk. My wife and I manage to keep a middle-size garden under control and grow some of our own veggies. If she would allow it, I would keep hens, bees and two or three goats. My wife, being a vastly wiser person than me, knows who would end up looking after them and has banned all livestock from the premises.

The main thing is to keep body and mind active, and above all, never feel guilty about a lie-in in the mornings!

I have a heart condition which stops me exersizing except for walkin g my GSD. I spend a lot of time on the computer as it keeps my mind active. Watching the television usually ends with my eyes shutting and snoozing.

While on my P.C I fly FSX and also race on-line with 'Live for Speed' and of lately 'RFactor 2 beta'. I used to race moptorcycles years ago and this still gives me the adreneline rush I used to get doing it in reality. All good brian food and it is that, that will stop you getting older. Haha.

I'm 70 now and I still beat youngsters more than half my age. That is a great buzz.

Now 60 I have another 5 years to go, Tom, and without wishing my life away, am already looking forward to it.

Have a ball in retirement and many thanks for Avsim!
