About This File

The AVSIM Basic FSX Configuration Guide provides members with a one-stop guide for configuring FSX for optimum performance.  Our goal at AVSIM is to make configuring FSX as simple as possible and to educate.  There are many FSX Configuration Guides published around the Internet and a member only has to do an Internet search using the Google or Bing search engines to find them.

The Microsoft-owned Flight Simulator is possibly the game industry's longest-running continuous franchise. The first Microsoft-branded version was released in 1982 with the most recent version, FSX, released in 2006 and expanded in 2007 with the release of Acceleration/SP2.  FSX is a 32 bit application that can reside in a 64 bit Windows operating environment.  Acceleration and the freeware version SP2 included a preview to DX10 technology as the Microsoft team did not have sufficient time to completely program FSX for DX10.  They had hoped to finalize development in a future update (as well as improve on the FSX engine) but the development team (AKA Aces Studio) was released by Microsoft before those upgrades could be published.  Currently, an add-on developer has fixed many of the issues left behind by FSX.  You can get more information about DX10 in our DX10 Forum.

Hi there, i don't know if it helps but i have noticed that in Windows 10 64 bit the amount of memory for 32bit apps is been reduced compared with Windows 7 (needed near 3.1 Gb of memory to crash "OOM error"). Now crashes around 2.5Gb 2.6Gb.

Hi there, my System is

Z170 Pro Gaming MB, Intel i7 6700K  OC @ 4.6, Memory 16GB @ 2400, Asus GTX 1080 TI FE, SSD EVO 850 250GB

Windows 10 Pro X64, FTX Global BASE Pack,FTX Global VECTOR, FTX Global openLC Europe, AS16 (Proposed Affinity Mask = 84), REX Essential + Overdrive, GSX, Various Airports. Aerosoft A320/321, PMDG 738/739 and PMDG 744.

Although i followed your instructions regarding FSX settings, especially with PMDG 744 my FPS are between 13-29. Do i miss something or is it normal for my hardware?

Regards.

Apologize for late response but Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows 10 provide up to 4GB's of Virtual Address Space for each application.  FSX and P3Dv3 and less, use more than normal because of all of the add-ons.  If your sim is crashing around 2.5 - 2.6GB's then you have a problem with an add-on, not VAS.  For instance, if you have a product not fully compatible with FSX or DX10, it will cause the sim to crash no matter how much VAS you have remaining.

Your system is NOT capable of running FSX with high settings.  If you used my suggestions (fsx.cfg and Nvidia Inspector), your fps will not be high and you may have to lock your FPS to gain smoothness.  You could probably lock your FPS around 25 and have good graphics and an enjoyable flight.  When FSX was first released in 2006, members were extremely happy if their fps exceeded 15 fps and most stayed in the 5-15 fps range but ONLY when they added add-ons.  With your system you can get over 300 fps with the default aircraft and scenery and fsx.cfg settings.  It starts getting bad when installing just one addon and worse when you install two or more.  If you can get a consistent 20 - 25 fps with many add-ons, you are doing well in configuring FSX!

I would say it is normal.  Anything over 15 fps in FSX and with an add-on like the PMDG 747 is great.  I know everyone would like to have fps steady at 30 fps or higher but that is the exception with FSX.  I have FSX installed on my system (i7-7700K OC to 4.5GHz; GTX 1080TI) and have problems maintaining fps above 30.  For that reason I have only installed the PMDG 737 as I know the 777 and 747 are resource intensive and will not allow me to enjoy my flight experience.  I also have the P3Dv4.2 and use it for my more resource intensive add-ons.  For you system I would lock the FPS at 24 (believe me the flight will be smooth but graphics will not immediately render but this is NORMAL as FSX uses the CPU to run things rather than the GPU).  If you had an application that was programmed to let a sim render textures using the GPU and the CPU to do everything else, you would have an exceptional flight experience with textures rendering almost immediately.

Thank you very much for your help, I was work around this days with FSX SE tweaks and nVidia Inspector and now my PMDG 747 v3 works at stable 28-30 FPS. I think this is a good result for my system.

Here some screenshots with FPS counter:

What airport and runway?

LYPG Podgorica Airport in Montenegro, Runaway 36. Im also using a REX 4 Texture Direct Enhanced Edition Steam DLC and I don't have any scenery. I'm buying only the Airplanes for FSX SE. Scenery is not important thing to me. :)

I did test PMDG 747 v3 in FSX Acceleration in LYPG rwy 36 and at all views I had consistency 58.5 - 59.8 FPS

I don't have FSX SE but fs9 and P3Dv4.1 in the same machine. I don't have REX. So, I think you may get higher FPS for FSX.

Why does my FSX crash when I turn on Preview DirectX 10?

You probably should post in the CTD forum.  Evidently your system can't handle DX10.

I agree you should post in the CTD or DX10 Forum with more details.  If you have an add-on aircraft or scenery NOT compatible with DX10, that might create a crash but there are many other factors that need to be looked at.  If you post in the CTD Forum, try to give us a Event Viewer report about the crash or use the AppCrashView App.

Is this guide no longer available?

(I have no clue how long the message at the top saying the link is broken has been there)

Good stuff.

I bought the original version for my Trash 80 in 1980 - Sublogic (Before MS acquired them) - $25 on cassette tape.flightsimulator-trs80.jpg

Banking left.

It was a 6x6 grid.

Then it duplicated although you saw no graphics until it was a full 36x36. Take off, fly North and eventually you emerged south of your takeoff point.

Fantastic !!!   Good old times!   Nice to see how it evoluted in a few 40 years....

well i have figured out my previous problem when installing on my windows xp computer FSX . before like i said on my previous post everytime I tried ti install FSX i got error 1722.

So I openned my C drive then Programs then Microsoft games and then removed and deleted all folders that said FSX. once done I emptied my recicling bins.

I whent to Microsoft.com and in the search bar I wrote ... fix for FSX error 1722

Microsoft then gave me the solution ... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/error-1722-when-reinstalling-flight-simulator-x-de4cfd63-4900-874d-5fc5-020555e62be2

I fallowed all the directions given by Microsoft on how to fix the error 1722.

i downloaded the fix, open and unzipped the file and then i had to open my ms dos program as per microsoft and fallowed the intructions given by Microsoft on what to write in my ms dos window.

Once all the above was done then I tried once again to install FSX on my pc. I noticed that at the beginning of the ins tallation of FSX where it says,,, regestering installation  was fast and didn't take 20 minutes like before it was quite fast. I waited for FSX to install and once it was done I had no error messages and I was also able to register FSX right away and I'm flying in my FSX once again. 🙂 🙂

I hope this may help any one having the same problem I had 🙂

Ari

Hi, would it be possible for the author of this manual to please message me privately? I have a bit of a complicated issue with blurry textures that I haven't been able to solve so far. Thanks in advance!
