Is it possible to fly a GPS approach Plate w/the 757?

Featured Replies

Every time I try to enter a 5 letter identifier from the GPS approach plate, it says that it is "not in the database". :-(Am I doing something wrong?(Example - Las Vegas GPS approach RWY 1L - need the final approach fix "DAMDE". FMC does not recognize this fix)Thanks,Chris

Chris,The same problem exists in the MSFS world. Unless someone proves me wrong there is no sim on the market (don't now about Elite) that lets you fly *TRUE* GPS approaches.Michael J.

Gents-you can define your own universal waypoints (UDW.txt is the file that they should go in, in folder rootFly!2folderPMDG). There is no restriction in how many waypoints you can have with the same name. Just add them all in...I will *try* to find additional info on this, but I am not the right person within PMDG regarding the FMC (Anthony is).Lemme see what I can find...Edit:Looks like the syntax for UDW.txt is as follows: (But I haven't verified it - you can give it your own try)USER_DEFINED_WAYPOINTS udwsEND_USER_DEFINED_WAYPOINTSwhere "udws" stands for one or more user defined waypoint, with the following syntax:WPT NAME LATLON LAT NB NB LON NB NB MAGVAR NBas an example (but, again, I haven't verified this)USER_DEFINED_WAYPOINTSWPT LKWPT LATLON N 37 40.42 E 28 45.32 MAGVAR 3.034WPT LKPT2 LATLON S 20 23.12 W 22 12.14 MAGVAR -13.034WPT LKPT2 LATLON N 33 32.11 E 34 32.87 MAGVAR 2.002END_USER_DEFINED_WAYPOINTSThis way, anyone can go ahead and add whichever waypoints they wish, based simply on LAT/LON and Mag Variation.

Lefteris,Setting up waypoints is only part of the problem. IFR-approved GPS recievers not only properly sequence the waypoints you are passing or are about to pass, they also modify CDI sensitivity to reflect closing distance from the runway. I don't know of any such GPS receiver being programmed for a sim, the same about FMS (not sure if new FMS-es even allow for a GPS approach).Michael J.

Michael-you may be correct. I cannot say that for sure. However, I was merely pointing out that the capability of adding user-defined waypoints is indeed there for our FMC, which will allow one to add a GPS-only waypoint (one that's not a navaid-based one).
