SIDs - STARs NOT read in? Read this...

Gents-it seems that for those of you who have problems reading in the SID and STAR files, we might have the reason:To be consistent with FSUIPC-style file paths, we read in the SIDSTARS folder location using a NETBIOS-style path (i.e. MYMACHINECfs2002PMDGSIDSTARS).As such, if your machine does not have NETBIOS installed, you might have problems with this...We'll be fixing it in the update, but for now, just install NETBIOS ;-).

I was the one :). Thanks to you and Anthony to track this down, really incredible support behind the scene by Email !Looks like XPPro doesn't have NETBIOS installed by default ?However, glad it's working now and I can enjoy the flexibility regarding programming of state-of-the-art SIDs, STARs, DME Arcs and so on. Can't find words to describe how much I enjoy this product, so I don't even try :)Mike

Mike -Net BIOS should be installed by default. It is on mine(if it isn't, I can read the SID/STARS just fine)

I;m on Windows XP...Should it be installed? Also if not where can I get it?Regards,OZE-202 (Sean)

Sean,Yes, it should be installed. Look in control panel network under your network adapter properties. You should have something called like "Microsoft Network Client" or something like that. If not, add it.anthonyAnthony MertonPrecision Manuals Developmenthttp://www.precisionmanuals.com

Thanks Anthony..However YMML SIDS didnt work for me :(Regards,Sean

ha....???I only have a sample for kloten.Do you mean there is more than that?I'm using DSL (no local network or network cards, just an external DSL modem). Should I have netbios?am I missing here something??thanx//Mike

Mike,Downloads on Main PMDG Site, SID/STARS download :)Regards,Sean

LefterisSorry, but I'm completely confused about this now...Please show a link to get/install NETBIOS for Windows XP Pro.Thanks for the help,Toni.

i've copied them in the sid star directory. How do i use them? is it in the FMC and would i be right in saying that the FMC can't be used until navdata is released? Thanks.Kev

(Edited by Lefteris, to clarify and make into paragraphs):Hi ToniYou must install netbios to view the SIDS and STARS:I will give you the setup of windows XP os.a) Click on "My Computer" - in the lefthand column, you will see "My network places" - click on this to open.:( Again on the lefthand column you will now see "view network connections" - click on this.c) Here you should find a "local area connection" setup. Double click on the "local area connection" icon, then click the "advanced" tab.d) Go down to the bottom, you will see a lead to the network wizard - double click this to run and follow this.e) Once windows XP has setup your network, double click the "local area connection" icon and click the "install" button.f) You will now see "service and protocol".g) First click "service" and install "file and print sharing for microsoft networks".h) when this is done, click "install" button again, but this time click on "protocol" and select "ipxspx" protocol. This will install NWlink Netbios.(Next go to PMDG folder in the root directory of FS2002 and locate the SIDSTARS folder, right click on this to access the sharing and security.Click this to open and tick boxes to share.A hand should now be under the folder icon showing it is shared. If you right click my computer icon you will see map network drive,This opens a drive letter and path box.If you have FS2002 installed in the default directory i.e c:program filesmicrosoft gamesFS2002 then type as follows in the path box your computer name which you gave it when you ran the network wizardfs2002pmdgsidstars.If you go back and open My computer you should see this as a network drive. If you forgot what you named the computer right click my computer select properties and select computer name tab.Make sure you use full computer name and not description mine for example would be paulcoopfs2002pmdgsidstars.) <--- All this unecessary, really.---I know this is long winded process but if you find this a problem you can wait to the patch comes out to solve this.I hope this helps. NetBIOS is used for Windows File & Print sharing. If port 139 is open, your computer is open to sharing files over the Internet. Other components of NetBIOS can expose your computer name, workgroup, user name, and other information. Dear Martin-installing NetBIOS does NOT mean that you need to leave port 139 open for external IP addresses. The average IT administrator will explain to you that you can block that port inside your firewall (as it's blocked by DEFAULT in most firewalls, i.e. ZoneAlarm, etc.). As such, you do yourself NO HARM installing it - and in our case, it's necessary for UNC name resolution (such as "MYPCCProgram Files", etc.)Hope this clarifies things.
