In real-life JETS, how are back course approaches flown

Of course, it can be done by hand.But , if the A/P has the facility to track a back-course localizer, how isthe descent handled in a jetliner when using this facility of the A/P. If itis not used, why does the A/P have the facility?Anybody know

in a back course loc, the descent is flown like a regular localiser approach, down to the mda and then down to the runway.Lobaeux

Hi as a general rule if it's a published approach and meets the requirements for larger(cat C and D) AC then it's legal to usethat approach. So that's why an AP would have the capability.When one engages "Back Course" the senseing is in fact reversed so that you can fly a back course the same way a front course is flownwith out "back course" mode your needle(CDI)works in reverse(to regain your final approach course you would turn away from the CDIrather than towards it.
