No, not really (re. FBW cockpit systems), really doesn't influence the layout and design. There is commonality, all the way down to the early 1960's 737-100, so that Southwest and a couple other carriers can fly them on the same type rating.The 737NG systems are in fact OOoooold, the overhead panel is ancient, all for commonality with older 737s.

So, I wonder if what's better- compatibility with other new aircraft offering crew operational flexibility, or compatibility with older models- also offering the same but in a different way.I guess Airbus had no prior models to need to be compatible with, and I guess that's what the penalty of being "first" (in historical terms) is. A bit like the NTSC TV system. :)I guess I'm getting this thread way off topic and had better cease. Intereseting discussion though!Thanks for your insight, Iz.Bruce.
