Attendant Call Button Procedures

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,I'm curious about what the different Call Button "ding-dongs" actually communicate to the flight attendants. Depending on the phase of flight, I know that one "ding-dong" can be very different than three or four "ding-dongs". Are there any real-life pilots that can help me out? I try to make my 737 flights as realistic as possible, but I've never been able to find a guide on how to signal the cabin crew about what is going on in the cockpit. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,Marc

I know on my experience with Virgin Blue, the more ding-dongs you ring, the more flight attendants come running.....;)

Bump.C'mon - I know somebody has to know what the "ding-dongs" mean. Rob, you fly for an airline, give us the scoop on the "ding-dongs". :-)Marc

I fly on Delta every week and they cycle the No Smoking onoff 2 cycles (4 rings) when going through 10,000 up and down. I also fly NorthwestContinental occasionally and they do 1 cycle (2 rings) for 10k.ComairASA (Delta Connection) do 2 rings when cleared to land.Hope this helps.

Okay guys..... Here are the VOZ Virtual standard "ding-dong" operating procedures :)1. Once the aircraft has received take-off clearance or when entering a runway for take-off (whichever is sooner) the flight crew will cycle the fasten belts switch, to give two audible chimes in the cabin.2. Once the aircraft is above 5000ft and conditions are anticipated to be smooth enough to allow the cabin crew to work safely, the flight crew shall signal for the cabin crew to commence duties by cycling the fasten belts switch, to give two audible chimes in the cabin.3. On descending through 5000 ft, the flight crew shall signal for the cabin crew to be seated for landing by cycling the fasten belt switch to give two audible chimes in the cabin.I hope this helps you out...Skip

I know KLM and Finnair used the "ding-dong ding-dong" to signal cabin crew to be seated. However, Finnair uses the "cabin crew please be seated for takeoff/landing" these days instead of the chimes.

I know that on all airlines the before takeoof bit is true - cycling the fasten seat belts switch. All the airlines I have ever been on though have just used the captain saying'Cabin Crew seats for landing, thank you' over the PA.

Sometimes it just means : " I am hungry, need a drink, need company..." ;-)

This is how we do it, it might differ on other airlines.2 ding, before takeof + through speaker "Cabin crew takeoff in xx minutes."1 ding after takeoff to let cabin crew start service (not necessarily seatbelts off. Since we do some short hops as well cabin crew has to start serving as fast as permisseable)above 10,000 seat signs off or at less altitude on short hops and if no passenger significant wx (e.g. clear of low level cumulus, etc.)1 ding, signs on, when expecting/encountering turbulence + on speaker message (in case of some heavier wx also warning for cabin crew to take seats. If not then cabin crew is still moving but pax have to be seated)2 dings sign on during descent (passing 10,000 or lower on short hops), followed by flight attendants pax landing briefing1 ding when 10min from landing to inform cain crew of final approach as well through speaker "Cabin crew landing in 10min" followed by cabin crew's standard speech to pax.Oh I almost forgot the infamous 2 ding "could I please get some diet coke" call that we harras our cabin crew with ;)Time for some sleep now :) I am dozing while writing this so I may have omitted some dings! ;)
