REF Speeds

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I just wanted to confirm something for my own sake about REF speeds. It says in the manual to add 1/2 steady wind plus full gust of wind factor to the REF speed. Say I was landing an ILS approach (with 8 kts wind with 10 kts gust) and the approach page says that 30REF is 150 kts, would it then become 30REF+14 because you need to add the wind correction? One thing thats always gotten me confused are the approach speeds. I usually dont fly in more than 2 kts approaches but I want to make it more windy so I need to confirm this first.Nick B.Continental Airlines Virtual 737NG Pilothttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpg--AMD Athlon XP 3200+ @ 2.2 Ghz (Equal to 2.8 ghz)400W Power supply3x 80 mm Case FansSoyo VIA KT600 Dragon PlusnVidia GeForce FX 5200 128 mb2 x 512 PC400100 GB Western DigitalMicrosoft Sidewinder Precision 2

Good question, I believe that the displayed APP REF already has +5 REF for headwind componate "added". So your 150 is really 145 + 5 for headwind automatically but I could be wrong hehe. Lol, thanks for your reply Randy. REF speeds always got me confused, especially on landing.Nick B.Continental Airlines Virtual 737NG Pilothttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpg--AMD Athlon XP 3200+ @ 2.2 Ghz (Equal to 2.8 ghz)400W Power supply3x 80 mm Case FansSoyo VIA KT600 Dragon PlusnVidia GeForce FX 5200 128 mb2 x 512 PC400100 GB Western DigitalMicrosoft Sidewinder Precision 2

Out of Continental's 737 POH, Target speed is the minimum maneuvering speed for the selected landing flaps.Target approach speed is VREF + 5 knots for landing in reported winds of zeroto light and variable (up to 10 knots). When landing in higher wind conditions, add

VREF+14 just seems to fast to me. On an autoland at 30REF I sometimes bounce, but not often. Anyways, thanks for that, it helped me confirm it.One more question, anyone know anything about the "Wind Corr" field in the Approach REF page? The default is 5, but if you try to change it you get no difference in the REF speeds. There's no information about it in the PMDG manual. Also, can I ask where you got?Nick B.Continental Airlines Virtual 737NG Pilothttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpg--AMD Athlon XP 3200+ @ 2.2 Ghz (Equal to 2.8 ghz)400W Power supply3x 80 mm Case FansSoyo VIA KT600 Dragon PlusnVidia GeForce FX 5200 128 mb2 x 512 PC400100 GB Western DigitalMicrosoft Sidewinder Precision 2

The correction for gusts is actually the difference between gusts and steady wind. So, for you example, Vref+6 ((8/4) + 10-8). Also, to Randy's comment, I believe the FMC displays the VREF for the flap setting without the +5. A VNAV approach however should automatically add the +5 to the VREF.Hope this is clear!

I guess the Wind Corr field is just as remind for you to correct it. Once again, thanks for the help Jeff.(You do truly learn something new everyday)Nick B.Continental Airlines Virtual 737NG Pilothttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpg--AMD Athlon XP 3200+ @ 2.2 Ghz (Equal to 2.8 ghz)400W Power supply3x 80 mm Case FansSoyo VIA KT600 Dragon PlusnVidia GeForce FX 5200 128 mb2 x 512 PC400100 GB Western DigitalMicrosoft Sidewinder Precision 2
