Can someone provide me with the link to download updates for XP Home so I can burn them to CD? Much appreciated! I have a crappy dialup connection and if I should happen to hose my installation, I'd like to be able to quickly install the updates.

Hi Gary,Unfortunately, read this:MS 'retires' corporate Windows Update in favour of SUShttp://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/26093.htmlWhile the individual files were available earlier today when I checked, I have no idea if they still are (and surely won't be for very long). I also have no idea if the latest ones are there... No new ones will be thats for sure.Damn Microsoft. :-fume I HATE automated crap - you have absolutely NO idea whats being done to your system and where, (and what new holes are being ripped open in the background!).Good luck,http://members.rogers.com/eelvish/elrondlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif

Well, I don't think thats the reason specifically. They do it (and have been doing like things increasingly for years) to obtain absolute control of the market. This is just another step in that direction... You being forced to update via pushed "patches" with MS Update or the background Dynamic Update process (enabled in XP by default - without user requested permission to boot) makes sure that any DRM or other type of "fix" is applied to the largest set of Windows boxes possible. Even when half the time new vulnerabilities are introduced. Its classic Microsoft (when it comes to Windows, that is).Anyway, in the meantime, you can still get whats available in individual files to be installed as you desire - but I'd do it pretty quick before they disappear completely:http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.aspGood luck, http://members.rogers.com/eelvish/elrondlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif

Point taken, Eric. What exact security issues are you talking about?I'm a private user, am only online via dialup modem.Have you any personal experience of a security breachon your home system or have you personally known anyonewho has? What are they going to take?I'd appreciate your advice.I took some security advice from Microsoft with XP Home and ending upwrecking things for weeks, couldn't get into mysecure sites, etc.Peter Sydney Australia

I'm talking about updates that are labelled Critical by MS. I'd have to load the list of installed updates to give you specifics. Mainly it depends on what software you run. You probably use Internet Explorer and there are security updates for it. Basically prevents people from gaining access to your system. There are many things that can be done by gaining access to your computer, and the first thing that comes to mind is stealing your passwords to shopping sites, credit cards numbers and the likes. Just that is worth using the updates.__________________________________________________________EricList of all airlines, aircraft manufacturers and aircraft types recognised by ATC:http://www.geocities.com/eric_2203/orhttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/esearch.php?D...atID=fs2002misc

Here is how you can download updates for installation at a later time. I am using Win XP Pro but it should be the same for you.1. I am assuming your online for this. Go to start menu, all programs, windows update.2. Windows update will open up, on the right side are a bunch of options, go to windows update catalog.3. A new screen comes up with updates for windows operating system or find driver updates for hardware devices. Select updates for windows operating systems.4. Now select which operating system you have and the language you use. (XP is at the bottom of the list so scroll down) Select search.5. Another menu comes up with critical updates and recommended updates. You can select either one and add which updates you want to download. Once you are finished selecting which updates you want, select go to download basket.6. You can type in the location you want to download the files to, or browse to find a folder to put your downloads in.7. Select download and you will be prompted to agree to the wonderfull license terms, and your off and running.Hope this helps :)Scott...

I thought I'd append my previous post to add some additional information that may be needed. If on the right side of the screen there is no windows update catalog selection, you will need to go to personalize windows update. The new screen that comes up will have a setting at the top to add windows update catalog to the see also menu, select that setting and save. Go back to the main update screen and continue as outlined above.THIS OUTLINED PROCEDURE ALLOWS YOU TO DOWNLOAD IN A SIMILAR MATTER TO THE CORPORATE UPDATE DOWNLOADS. Scott...
