This Boeing 747-200 (B747) joined the airline on 6 November 1971 at the cost of ZAR17 milion (Euro 1.9 million) Did you read the above at the bottom of that page?Am I to understand that the price of the 747 in 1971 was only Euro 1.9 million? That would be like 1% of today's price. Probably impossible. Or was it just the downpayment? It is possible to land on a 3400ft long rwy with a B747 (at Basic operation weight with a very small amoud of fuel) but it can't depart anymore.

Hi all,The 747-200 weighed 391,600 pounds when it landed. Did you noticed the slow landing speed the pilot elected of 115 knots? In 1973, I remember a 747-200 would come and praticed touch-and-goes at the Birmingham International airport. At the time, it was only a municipal airport. The runway was 10,000 X 150 feet. The take-offs and landing speeds were very slow because it carried no passengers and probably weighed at around 400,000lbs. I loved to watch this giant bird fly. Ken.
