New - PMDG 747-400 Tutorial

Recommended Posts

I have written quite an extensive tutorial about flying the 747-400 PAX version of the PMDG Queen. It's my attempt at putting down most of my knowledge when it comes to flying the Queen.I wrote it because most of the tutorials that I have read/seen.. tend to concentrate on button pressing.. rather than actually saying what these buttons actually do.. Which I think really defeats the point of the explaination.. The PMDG simulation is very rich and complex.. and it's much more complicated than it often gets credit for.. I think button pressing tutorials are useful for the more experienced simmer, but those that are starting out and are new to airliners in general, this I hope.. will help them understand and operate the Queen. There is another purpose of this tutorial though, and that is to fine tune my knowledge and update the document as I find out things are wrong.. (which they will be).. That's where I'd like your help..The tutorial can be found on AVSIM library.. search for "PMDG Craig Read" and you should find it.. it is titled.."PMDG 747-400 PAX Tutorial Long Haul Flight"Please feel free to comment on the content and for those newbies to the 747... let me know what you think.. If you want to post comments after reading it.. please do so.. Some might find it a bit wordy but I've tried to keep it informal but informative.. I also would like to say.. I used some of the ideas in the PMDG tutorials, although did not copy any of their material as this is copyrighted... But without those tutorials some of this detail would have been omitted.. I have credited PMDG for this in the references..If people have questions feel free to post them here.. or PM them to me..ThanksCraig

CraigIt's taken me quite a while to read through this - I always read before I try - and I have to say a HUGE thank you - that is one of the most comprehensive and in depth laymans tutorials that I have ever come across. A suggestion to the PMDG crew - you might want to put this on the download page or on the Ops pages.Mark

Mark,Thanks.. I'm glad you liked it.. I tried to make it as comprehensive as possible and not a button push procedure manual.. I never found those all that useful.. There are additions I want to make in the next cut..1 - Improve the images and format..2 - Try to add the charts to it..3 - Include more detailed descriptions of they hydraulics and other systems.I'm also thinking about generating one for missed approaches.. other types of approach and abnormal procedures.. and then generating an additional document for these.. but it's a potential works really..I was just tired of tutorials telling me WHAT to do.. rather than.. WHY I was doing it..ThanksCraig

I would really like to include diagrams of Heathrow.. and the WOBUN departures in the tutorial... and I am picking up errors every hour now.. So 1.1 should be a vast improvement.. This is by no means perfect.. but as an initial stab it's not bad at all..If someone could point me to FREE.. and non copyright charts for Heathrow taxiways.. and the WOBUN 2F and 2G departure SIDs.. I'd really apprecaite that.. I removed the original charts.. as I was not sure if they infringed copyright or not..Thanks..Craig

Hi Craig,It's an excellent piece of work. I have started reading it and I think its a must for understanding this very complex plane, for the most experienced simmer aas well as the movice. For the EGLL charts, you can check the AIS site of the UK.http://www.ais.org.uk/aes/login.jsp.I also second to the offer that this valuable tutorial should find its plcae in the downloads pager of PMDG website.CheersMusashi

Looks very impressive indeed, with many very wonderful and colorful screenshots. The WHY is at least as important as the WHAT--I've reflected on this for years now. Well done and thanks very much!Jonathan

Thanks everyone for the encouragement.. I am glad you all like it.. I know it needs more work here and there.. but in 1.1 I plan to put a lot of that right.. please.. feel free to e-mail me with suggestions and comments.. I'd like to make it as accurate as possible..Current AVSIM count is 1102.. I had no idea it would be that popular!CheersCraig

First of all, Congrats on writing such an excellent tutorial, I'm impressed.Second of all, it would be great if you released a change log that depicts the changes from 1.0 to 1.1 to 1.2, etc so that those of us that have printed/will print version 1.0 can change/add in or correct mistakes. That would save us from printing the whole tutorial again.Keep up the good work

Nice work on the tutorial Craig .Are you planning to release a turorial for the 744F ? A tutuorial for that 744F would be nice to. Suggestion for the 1.1 update use higher resolution pictures in the tutorial it will look a lot better and sharper also.http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/747400.jpg http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/checkcapt.jpghttp://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u132/REVO321/lsd1.jpg http://www.captainsim.com/user/dl/b757/752_users_banner.gif

Yes.. I'm going to include a suppliment document that will detail all the changes and the respective versions the changes were part of.. It will be very comprehensive so don't worry.... The next update will change a lot of things I think.. and tidy up some of the loose ends.. I'd like to incorporate a portion of NATS in the revision.. so that's covered in more detail.. As for the images.. I have them at a very high resolution on the original document.. but size of the tutorial made giving you that version too difficult.. it was over 350MB in size.. I edit that.. and then compress as much as I can to get it to the size that it is now.. I do want to improve some images though..I might do a supplimental for the 747F.. essentially the avionics are the same.. there are some changes in ECS and other systems but the flight controls are more or less identical.. I'm not sure yet.. I thought I would concentrate on some abnormal procedures for my next project.. do different approaches.. etc.. perhaps even some manual training routines for laps of airfields etc.. I think it would be nice to detail some of the emergency systems too.. their functionality etc.. Who knows.. perhaps 744 aerobatics? lol.. joking :)Cheers Craig

Well what ever you decide as your next tutorial I am pretty shure that it will be great.Craig I have a question did you ever consider making a turorail for the PMDG 737? There are a lot of tutorials outthere for the 737 but you can make a better one than all of theose out there.:-) but for real,a realistic turorial for the 737 would be nice also.Maybee you can try to make some realistic repaints for the 744 like for exmaple LUFTHANSA CARGO for the 744F. That would be nice. :-)==================================== REVO.http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/747400.jpg http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/checkcapt.jpghttp://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u132/REVO321/lsd1.jpg http://www.captainsim.com/user/dl/b757/752_users_banner.gif
