What is the best way to shut down a 747 engine?

Featured Replies

To understand how the 747-400 flies with only three engines is there a "best" way to shut one of them down while in flight?Cliff

For training practice on three engines. I would suggest shutdown Engine 2 or 3 since they have the least HYD. System Redundancy. Also, do not forget to open all crossfeed valves (if not already open). Set the Transponder to TA only. And you can start a practice for flying 3 engines. If necesary you might need to trim the a/c.

Ramon I'm not yet able to start from Cold and Dark and hence am not well aquainted with the engine switches.May I ask you to tell me what switches I should use to shut down one of those engines?Cliff (In Spain)

Bingo...I found it under the throttles! And thanks for the advice about the cross feed valves and the need to trimRegards,Cliff

Ofcourse. On the throttle panel, below the throttles there are 4 fuel control switches. They are numbered from, left to right, 1,2,3 and 4.Switch number 3 to cutoff and a few seconds later you will hear a master caution and on the EICAS y'll see >ENG 3 SHUTDOWN

Excellent idea Ramon. I'll watch that video. But I have another question please. Why do I have to trim the aircraft after an engine shut down if the Autopilot is engaged?

Why do I have to trim the>aircraft after an engine shut down if the Autopilot is>engaged?Thats the 'if neccessary' bit - i.e. if you didn't have the AutoPilot on you would probably trim it to compensate for the asymetrical thrust.
