How do I set NAV freq for ILS in the 747.

OKHere is the deal. I am new to heavies (I generally fly only GAs). and I want to fly the 747 like a GA for now. Meaning.. I'll use the auto pilot (which seems to work as expected for the most part) or hand fly.Except... I want to use the NAV radio's ILS for eg.I don't want to use the FMC.For now, I start with the 747 all started and ready to go, hand fly the take off...then use the auto pilot with auto throttle to fly it to my destination and then tune to the ILS or VOR frequency and try to land the sucker. Thats what I want to do for now.Can this be done? if so..how do I tune the ILS frequency?I have the flightlink Avionics and the Radio comm frequency seems to work with my h/w avionics.. but when I tune in the NAV freq, I don't see the ILS being accepted by the PFD.Thanks for the help.MannyPS: Baby steps... slowly I may move into the deeper aspects of this beast.I have been doing the same with Flight1 ATR72-500 too. :(

Guess what? you have to use FMC to tune radios. Search the forum for radio tuning.:-yellow1

Hiya Manny,Sadly you are going to have to use the FMC, it's not just there to impress the Flight Attendants with. (they aren't usually impressed by such tecnhical wizardry anyway, try a nice car or an appreciation of fine wine for that)You can use the NAVRAD page of the FMC to tune the radios, have a look through the manual and the forum.BUT...If you don't use the FMC to set up other things like your performance data and takeoff speeds, you're going to struggle in a big way, seriously.Rest assured there are plenty of us here who WILL help you, the only requirement being that you read the manual in advance and provide as much info as you can on the circumstances of your flight as and when you run into trouble.The rest of us are just ordinary Joes/Janes and with practice we can handle the systems with our eyes tied behind our backs and our hands closed (as my instructor once said), it isn't hard once you master it but it sure is rewarding.EDIT: I should have pointed out that the ILS is handled on a different radio to your NAV1 and NAV2. Again, info on this will be located in the manual under ther NAVRAD page section of the FMC guide.

Can you tune the NAV radios only and use them to navigate with. Does the 747-400 have backup NAVS in case the FMC has a failure? Thanks Frank C

You would need lots of failures to prevent you tuning at least one of the three ILS (or Multi-Mode) receivers.Cheers.Q>
