Cabin altitude

Rayek,The cabin altitude is measured in feet. So if it shows say 6000ft in cruise it means your cabin's air is as thin as if you'd be standing on a mountain 6000ft high.Regards,Markus

As already said it is the level at which the cabin maintains during the cruise. When the aircraft is sitting on the ground, the cabin pressure is the same as the ambient pressure and the outflow valves are fully open. However as the air gets thinner as the plane climbs, there is less oxygen to breathe, so the outflow valves begin to close to stop the air escaping. This increases the cabin pressure compaired to the ambient pressure and will usually maintain a level of between 6000-8000ft and is also known as delta pressure of around 8-9.Also note that the cabin will climb more rapidly than it will descend in descent to allow the body to equalise to the changing pressures (that pain you get in your ears during descent) - not that this can be modelled in FS :(

On the ITVV 767 DVD the Captain explains that the 'worst case' scenario for them as a twin engine on ETOPS is not an engine out, but a cabin depressurization.With an engine out they can descend at a leisurely pace from their FL300+ altitude to the nearest sutable airfield.But with a depressurization they need to immediately descend to below 10,000 feet or risk loss of conciousness due to lack of oxygen at such high flight levels. Increased fuel burn at this lower altitude is such that it becomes a significant factor in selecting alternate airports enroute.
