Inflight engine start 747

Hi captains :-)I am flying the great Queen from Lima to Palma... uh! a long flight... about 4800nm. I had a wonderfoul take-off out of Lima, and after a beautyful circle over the airport I haeaded over the top of the Andes mountains... and climbed to my initial altitude of 31000ft. Everything seems to be allright but then - I do not know why - suddenly my Engine #1 failed and it shutted down - perhaps a flame out (there wasnt any fire alarm...).My porblem: how to restart that engine so that I do not continue the flight

Greetings,I'm only just starting to learn more about the failures and inflight restarts myself so I may not be of much help, but I'll see if I can't offer some suggestions. It's quite possible that what ever caused the engine to fail may also be preventing the restart. However, two things I would suggest checking would be the fuel section on the overhead panel. I'd guess for a flight that far you'll have more than 120,000lbs of fuel on board so make sure all the crossfeeds are open. Secondly, try moving the fuel control switch to run before pulling the starter, making sure of course that the autostart switch is on.I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me will be able to offer more suggestions but hopefully this may help in the meantime. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

well where shell I start,at first, you need to verify wether you have fuel pumps on and fuel in the respective tanks.To make it clear: the amber readings wich appeared on the EICAS at the time the engine died display the engine in flight restart limits you should not exceed them if you want that engine back! Perhaps you will need to descend if the upper FL limit is under your current altitude.Now bring up the lower EICAS and select the engine page. Now if you see the message "x-bleed" displayed above the failed engine, this means you will have to provide bleed air for the starter in order to restart the engine.For this turn on autostart run that fuel cutoff switch and pull the starter switch. This should bring the engine back alive ,if not, that engine needs to be taken care of by maintanceIf you dont get the "x-bleed" message, you can perform a "windmill" start, this means that you dont need to provide any bleed air for the starter since the engine has alrdy enough rpm for a proper start up.( due to the wind streaming through that engine and as a result rotating it) The only thing left for you to do now is to run that fuel cutoff switch and turn on continous ignition by pressing the con switch right under engine start switch no.2.If this doesnt work check whether you are inside the flight limits displayed on upper EICAS. If you are ,than it means that engine has taken some serious damage and cannot be used anymore.Hope that helps

Mmmmhhh,I've still a long flight ahead, and a few alternates over the amazon yet... but I am wonder why I cannot start it :-(If I "run" the fuel cutoff, the amber text disappear, but that's all, no luck with the engine. If I try to pull the engine start switch on the OE (without autostart), N1 rises to about 5.2 and N2 rises to about 34 but stay there.I am a bit wonder about the "Drive" thing. Yuppe!Thank for the help, but at last it was pilot error! :-rollI must have pulled the fire fire/shutoff Handle on the OE, but beeing dark I overlooked it all the time (you see it on my pics above... if you look in the dark)! My fault.Anyway, great aircraft, thanks for the helpNow returning on my FL... just in time before the atlantic, hoping naturally without further "incident" :-)Happy flying to all :-wavePascal

Hi,I did not pull it intentionally, it must be in clicking around* :-roll... In fact, I did not know it was pulled, and overlooked it all the time.It is with the help of the abnormal procedures manual that I saw the error: in the interpretation of the EICAS messages... there was the answer all the time...Anyway... i finished the flight successfully and I am now enjoying the sunny island :-)))ThanksPascalhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/147999.jpg
