Great real world Cathay cockpit 744 video

There is only one A/T motor and each lever is connected to it via a friction clutch. If one of these slips a severe asymmetry would be generated as the levers advanced. The crew follow up on the throttles in case of this, or in case the throttle hold function does not work. As there is no F/E to fine tune the power, using TOGA mode makes sense. It saves crew workload and so it's usually part of the SOP. Also the autothrottles are already engaged in TO then CLB mode ready for the AP to be connected. After the "EPR set" call, the Pilot Flying must keep a hand on the throttles whether the A/T is engaged or not in case of a takeoff abort. The 747 EEC (or more usually FADEC on later aircraft) cannot control power as you suggest unless the A/T is engaged. If A/T is not engaged it will simply set the EPR/N1 corresponding to the selected thrust lever position, not the selected rated power. The FADEC/EEC EPR/N1 demand is shown on the EPR/N1 indications. So if you took off without using TOGA A/T you would have to align each thrust lever so the command index aligned with the thrust limit index marks on EICAS.Kevin

Actually there appears to be quite a lot of runway left at rotation (LHR runways are very long).Although the Captain says "max thrust" thrust is derated to TO-1 (at 80 knots there is a close up of EICAS showing this). The thrust reduction to CLB-1 at Flap 5 is automatic. The F/O is merely ensuring the autothrottle doesn't reduce thrust below the CLB setting (his hand is flat behind the levers).Kevin

OK, I got the ITVV Boeing 747-400 Virgin Atlantic London Heathrow to San Francisco.I like it very much..it was also almost 2.30 hrs. WOW... and very detailed. The Q I have is.. Would it also add value if I get the Cathay pacific to Kai Tak? Its only 1 hrs I think. I saw one post here about the Cathay pacific Kai Tak is not very good. Hmmm.,...Manny

>The Q I have is.. Would it also add value if I get the Cathay>pacific to Kai Tak? Its only 1 hrs I think. Added value... yes. On this Cathay DVD you have Don Grange showing you some manoeuvres in the simulator. Things that - for obvious reasons - could not be shown on the Virgin DVD.And, not everyone would agree with me on this, there's another reason for buying this DVD; You get to see the times when Kai Tak was still in use and thus you see that great approach into that airport. The days when Cathay still had their old colours flying and Concorde was still flying. It's kind of a classic really. But as I said not everyone would see that as "added value" :)Regards,Markus
