Hey John,i know it wouldn't be a fullcrash but a scratching sound would be nice to realize a tail strikeor how does a Pilot observe a tail strike?kind regardsJ

The mx guy on the next walk around would probably be the one to spot a tail drag on one of these 747s. Just FYI, tips of the outflow valves are the tails kid on these beasts. Twice now, I've seen those valves ground down . . . to various degrees. . . and not a word in the book. In once case, it took a 3 foot graze of belly skin too. They didn't know it happened at all. Always look for that big, sheet metal patch on the belly forward of the outflow valves and aft of the gear. This is where the airplane really grinds on the runway. Boeing has that repair patch down pat. This is not uncommon. It doesn't just happen on take-off either. San Diego had a real reputation for luring a crew into over-flare events during an unstable, OMG! landing attempt. When in doubt, go around. Speed taping these things up for a ferry flight to Everett is a thrill I found fun . . . once upon a time.
