Kai Tak..........the definitive post.........adding a l...

Recommended Posts

Hi All-This is a topic that comes up at least a few times each week. I am in pursuit of the "Holy Grail" of approaches, and a a bit confused with all the various postings on this topic. Could we develop "An Idiot's Guide to adding Kai Tak to the PMDG FMS?" I already have the scenery file (using Kai Tak 98) and it looks wonderful. BTW I am hoping to add Mr. Kwong's Chep Lok today (will it work together with the Kai Tak scenery without issue?).I'm thinking af a step by step procedure, with all necessary insertion text in correct font and spacing, SID/STAR info and helpful tips- all in one reference compliation.Anyway, if we could get our best minds together to help the rest of us dim-wits accomplish this I would be most grateful. There seems to be enough interest to work on this project so..........thank-you in advance!Carl F. Avari-Cooper BAW0225http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/supporter.jpg

Carl,This is a long one but stay with it....I have made my own hybrid SID/STAR file, but where possible I have used current STARs as I have found that this makes my flight planning to Kai Tak much easier (I am still on AIRAC 0806)& I do still fly there regularly.I have also created a very accurate (well in my opinion??) rendition of the IGS proceedure, with all the correct DME fixes etc, this was created in conjunction with my own AFCAD file, during a few late nights at the sim.You can find some excellent apprach charts for Kai Tak by visiting the Cathay Pacific Airways Virtual website & following the link to Kai Tak.I have found that most of the addon scenery can be a frame rate killer (just when you don't need it!!) so if anybody knows where I can find JUST the approach lighting it would be useful. As for the IGS approach....well long post but here goes....its not the diffinitive by a long shot but it works for me!!!Lets assume you have the a/c (B744) set up for a flap 30 ldg, autobrake 2, with the IGS 111.90/088 manually tuned into the FMC Nav Rad page, MDA set to 680. Its also handy to have your comm panel set up so you are able to hear the approach markers, CH & TH VORs tuned as well as the RW NDB (377) I also suggest you use fairly clear weather the first couple of times. You decend inbound to the CH VOR overhead at 8000' the continuing the decent initially to 6000' outbound on the 270 radial to waypoint 'Golf' at the 7 DME/270R from CH, at this stage I am slowing the a/c down to 220kts & getting Flap 1 deployed. Then its down to 4500' turning right onto HDG 045 to intercept the IGS inbound cse of 088, further slowing below 200kts & getting back to Flap 10 - not forgetting to arm the LOC mode on the MCP!!If you time this segment nicely you will intercepting the LOC beam at about 10-11 NM out at 180kts with Flap 10, arming the G/S mode on your MCP, well before the G/S beam comes alive. You will also get a nice view of Chep Lap Kok (VHHH) below you during the turn!!Continue down the LOC & intercept the G/S normally (once gear down/Flap 20 ARM those spoilers!!!) aiming to be at VREF + 10 kts with Flap 25 as you decend through approx 9 DME prior to the OM. You should then be in a perfect position to get back to Flap 30 & VREF + 10 Kts overhead the OM at approx 1720'. Complete the landing checklist & once you have Flap 30 Green reset your HDG on the MCP to 136, ensure you still have 4500 still dialed into the ALT window just in case of the Go -Around.Once your happy you have her in a stable approach configuration get rid of the A/P, FD & the A/T & continue the approach until minimums. You can push left of the LOC centre-line in good visual condidtions in order to give you a shallower turn onto short final, but if the conditions are marginal keep it on the numbers down to 680'.At MDA (or before) commence the right turn.As for the turn try to set her up into a constant rate initially, adjusting as you go with a bit more or less bank as required. I normally input 17-20 degrees initially, depending on the wind, you may need less or slightly more, 25 degs is the most I have ever needed.Keep that rate of decent at 600-700 fpm, no more or you will get low obviously. Use your throttles, with a slight nose pitch up for decent rate control in the turn. Always try to maintain VREF + 10 Kts.You should roll out of the turn at approx 400-350 AGL lined up on a very short final. Make your adjustments at this stage small ones as you are very near to the ground.Flare & land normally, or if it does'nt look right execute a G/A immediately. Do not try & will her onto the rwy or you will look like the KAL 744 we have all watched in the video!!!!The bottom line is if you cannot see the RWY environment by MDA, or if you are not happy at any stage - execute a G/A immediately. This must be by the MM during the MDA segment anyway.During the G/A get the F/D back on to give you the correct pitch indications.Cannot say more than that really, its just simple plain old 'seat of the pants' stuff, not forgetting the huge amount of inertia you have with a 250 ton piece of metal behind you, I wish that bit could be replicated in the virtual world!!It took me plenty of practice to get any where near an acceptable standard of accuracy, but just like the real world you need to be prepared that you will not get it right every time!!! This is what makes it so much FUN!!!If you want to have a look at my AFCAD & SID STAR file send me an e-mail.Regards

Ok some more success- here's what I have done so far......FIRSTGot the scenery from Avsim- search for Kiatak98.zipSECONDGot the SID/STARS from NavData (Old Hong Kong VHHX)http://www.navdata.at/php/sidstar/dl_list.php?addon=PMDGTHIRDBacked-up the WpNavAPT.txt AND airports.dat fileFOURTHFollowed the instructions in this post....http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...28457&mode=fullFIFTHFlew the approach!Still having an issue with auto-tuning, CH and SL both show on the Nav Display, however the radio does not auto tune....despite the IGS13 approach available in APPDEP.....?? I was able to manually tune 111.9/088 and execute....?? Also, when forming route VHHXVHHX the CO and SL and IGS Procedure show ok (incluging magenta confirmed FP for LNAV), but FMS calculated 700 odd miles to VHHX and with the fuel load set for a light approach, kept giving me INSUFFICIENT FUEL messages. I knew the actual distance so I kept clearing the message- just annoying......... The FMS read all the other distances, including TH fine.....Maybe one of our experts can look at my files.....or hazard a guess as to what the issue is.....anyway success in the Baron....total disaster in the 400F...........WONDERFUL!!!!!Thanks to all- and esp. to PMDG- nothing beats this bird!Carl F. Wow..what a rush, cajoling 600,000 lbs of airframe on to a curved approach and actually touching down without incident. Turning off 13 I saw the Fire Trucks, and just for a moment found myself in the cockpit of Cathay 561 (from the Google Video)....Still a mess as far as radio tuning/FMS, but at CG I disconnected everything and hand flew to to the runway..........WOW!Some pics for fun.......anyone know, is it an afcad, file edit or ??? issue re. the radio/fms probs....... Carl,Nice one mate, BTW what sort of frame rate were you getting with the scenery????With regard to the auto tuning of the IGS (KL), an entry must be added to one of the files in your AIRAC, can't remember which one though. This should then auto tune once rwy selection is made. Have not done this myself yet, I will have to use the same co-ordinate info as in my AFCAD file, will have a look at it tomorrow night.I will paste my SID/STAR file into a post tomorrow night, but as I said it will only work with my AFCAD unless I reprogramme the co-ordinates from the addon scenery AFCAD (time consuming!!!).Keep on flying the approach until you feel relaxed & can anticipate your next move.Regards

The ILS info is included with each runway in the wpNavAPT.txt file. The two entries I have left over from last time this came up are:Hong Kong VHHX31 10930316 22.304401 114.216064000.0031600000Hong Kong VHHX13 10930136 22.324850 114.193176000.0013600000Adjust the spacing with space bar (not tab key) to line up with existing entries. These need to be inserted into the file as separate lines after each cycle updates because it is an inactive airport and not included in current data. The airports.dat file needs the following line inserted:VHHX 22.316959 114.202621The third file is the VHHX.txt file for sidstars.Hope this helps.

Carl,As promised here is my SID/STAR file for VHHX, make a copy of your current file & stick it somewhere safe, then copy the data below into your VHHX file. This also includes the direct feed & racetrack feeds to the Rwy 13 Visual approach - even more fun.The STARs are more recent & the same as those for VHHH ending at the CH VOR for the IGS 13 Approach.Same detail with the AFCAD, SAVE THE ORIGINAL somewhere safe then add mine & away you go!!EnjoySteve B// VHXX - HONG KONG KAI TAK INTL// Copyrighted 25/04/2006 by Steve BELL// Data from Carl,Did you get the file vhxx.zip from the Avsim library? It has some of the SID/STARS for Kai Tak runway 13 and 31 tells you where to install them into your PMDG database for use with the FMS and it should work since you have the Kai Tak 98 file installed in FS9. I've been flying these approaches while using the 747 FMS with the above files. You can even use the holding pattern at the CH VOR when coming into Kai Tak in preparation for final approach to runway 13. Fun!Kim

Thanks Steve. Just a quick question about adding your details to the AFCAD file. I have the "af2_VHHX_ils_jv.bgl" which has come together with the scenery. Do I really have to add all your text to that file, and if yes, where, on top or at the bottom?Roland

Does anyone know of any GOOD Kai Tak (VHHX) freeware scenery available on the net? If you could provide a website name and filename to assist with locating it, I'd be most grateful! Thanks,
