Using Autoland in the 737

Recommended Posts

While flying the 737 tutorial by Tim Metzinger I was practicing the approach to KTNT rw 09 in the second flight. I can not seem to get the second AP to engage and end up making a manual landing. The tutorial says to press CMD B at flaps 30, but by then the approach light is off and I seem committed to a single channel AP landing. How do I activate both APs for the autoland?? Thanks. Tom

Tom,You will need to have the second A/P engaged prior to reaching 1500' Radio altitude in order to engage the Autoland feature. I suspect you may be getting your flaps out a little late in the approach. Have you tuned the ILS frequency in BOTH Nav-1 and Nav-2 radios ?If not, you will never get to engage the second autopilot. And also, APP button light turns off when glideslope has been captured. Jose Luis.

I had both NAV radios tuned to the ILS, although my CRS and MCP HDG were set to different values: is that relevant?Your tip makes a lot of sense! I'll give it a go tonight and report back.Best regards,Pedro Venda.

>>The same happened to me.a couple of weeks ago. I had both NAV>radios tuned to the ILS, although my CRS and MCP HDG were set>to different values: is that relevant?>No, it is not relevant as you are not flying in an active HDG mode and the ILS has only one possible COURSE to intercept(the one of the localizer). And if you fly the 744 you even don't have to dial the ILS course into the MCP, the big machine will do it for you !!Jose Luis.
