Help in intercepting VOR

Recommended Posts

Guest gilbnx

Hi,I was the other day trying to comply with a departure procedure which requires to cross SMO VORTAC (110.80) at 160 Radial and turn left.I set VOR L for 110.80/160 (and it showed the correct frequency and radial in the radio screen in FMC) and at the same time I saw the VOR L showing DME of 5.0 in the Inboard (Navigation display) which means I did receive the VORTAC signal.I switched to "VOR" in the ND mode selection and saw the details of the VOR but I was NEVER able to see either "FROM" or "TO" indication from the VORTAC and was never intercepted the VOR. I am sure I was on the track to intercept it as it is part of the departure procedure (taking off from KLAX at runway heading of 250 and waiting to intercept 110.80 at radial 160).Am I doing something wrong? Why the VOR shows only DME value but never show TO/FROM and showing the needle for radial intercept? Thanks,Gil.

Gil,You should see a TO/FROM indicator on the right side of the display... let me go try this and I'll post back. Which exact DP is it?

Thanks,This is the LOOP4 SID out of KLAXBTW, DME was shown also from the ground. Let me know if you have any TO/FROM when you are parked. I'll load PMDG now as well...

BTW, this is an image of the Navigation screen in VOR mode at LAX parking (gate 74).I can see the DME but not the TO/FROM (should indicate "FROM")

Will try it in a sec... got caught up with something else. That does look odd, the CDI isn't there either. Does it remain this way when you get up in the air too?

Hi, Thanks for testing this :-)It is the same when I'm in the air as well.I fly with PMDG for a long time but never actually got to use the VOR display as everything was entered through the route plan (via the LEGS screen on FMC).

Gil,I see the FROM marker and the CDI sitting on 25R ready for takeoff. Are you using FSInn or anything like that? It's known to cause problems with our NAV radios due to an issue with how they're coded.

Yes, I do use FSInn (It was not running at the time I tried it though).I can replace it with something else - any recommendation for an alternative s/w other than FSInn?

YES! you were right!Uninstalling FSInn and installing SB3 instead - the VOR is working fine. Thanks.I liked FSInn... too bad it cannot co-exist. Any plans to work on compatibility later on?Thanks for the quick support,Gil.

Gil,>Any plans to work on compatibility later on?As I understand it the above question should be addressed to the FSInn authors. You can do a search on FSInn in this forum and get the full story.Glad you got up and running,

Yeah, we have actually offered many times to help the author of FSInn fix this and he chose to respond with wild accusations against us instead of fixing the problem. Any aircraft using the sort of advanced programming around the FS nav radio system like we do would also have the issue. It's totally up to him to fix it and I wouldn't hold your breath, it's been an issue forever.I'd recommend using SB3.By the way, there's another way to do these sorts of procedures if you didn't know, and that's by using the FMC's FIX page. Just enter SMO and then 160 into the next line down and the radial will be drawn on the ND in MAP mode. You can draw DME circles around any fix using / and then the DME as well, or a combination of both by entering radial/DME.

If you're interested, I have a LOOP4 DP coded that programs the departure in the FMC (select LOOP4.NOATC), as done with most of my SIDSTARS. It also includes the altitude crossing restriction after takeoff until pass the charted SMO radial. You can get the KLAX procedures from either http://navdata.at or with the current CYCLE 0708 COLLECTION in the AVISM library.

Thanks guys for all the help!Ryan - I'm with SB3 now and will probably stay with it (as my flights are all around PMDG's B744). I will also use the FIX page; I never actually used that page much as my flight plans were prepared with FSbuild and were loaded into FMC with some modification I did through the LEGS page.Dan - Yes, I downloaded yesterday the new AIRAC 0708 with the terminal procedures (if you are referring to that). I'll take a look how LOOP4 SID for example is showing...Again, thanks allot for a quick response and help.Gil.

Gil: The AIRAC data does not include SIDSTARS. For an explanation of the difference see: http://ops.precisionmanuals.com/wiki/SIDSTARSIf you download cycle_0708_sidstars.zip from the AVSIM library you'll get the current procedures for 60 locations. Or, you can go to http://navdata.at and download just klas.txt.AIRAC data includes the location of airports, runways, fixes and navaids and airways. SIDSTARS are the procedures used for arrivals, departures (such as LOOP4 at KLAX) and approaches. Two different sets of data but they operate together.

Thanks Dan,I know what SID/DP/STAR are :-)The latest AIRAC update from navigraph includes also "Terminal Procedures" for PMDG products (http://www.navigraph.com/www/fmsdata.asp) So I thought you refer to these as well. I noticed quite few more Arrival/departure procedures after the last ("AIRAC 0708B" (notice the "B" as it was modified after the usual 0708 release) ).I will look at navadata.at for some other SID/STARs. Thanks!Gil.
