FS2002 & Frame rates

Recommended Posts

Guest

Hi Folks,Could I ask what most people see as 'acceptable' frame rates for FS2002. The reason, I have a new PC - XP2000, 512 mb, nvidia 64mb card and with all the settings at max I get the following:1. Flying across country 29-302. Flying over non-US cities ie London - 15-203. Flying over US cities 27-304. Taxi-way at Major airports - 10 - 15I have the framelock set at 30 - the default. Now whilst I am quite happy with the frame rates, sometimes the images do flicker a wee bit.So i was just interested really.Cheers,Keith

I have a P3/800, and I do a bit better-24/25 fps average (locked at 25), with 15-20 at major airports like LAX. With the fps unlocked, I've clocked between 50-60 fps in level flight, away from major cities and airports. How do I accomplish this sleight of hand with a slower PC?1) I leave AI either off, or at a low level.2) I leave A/C reflections off, unless I'm taking a screenshot.3) Autogen I either leave off, or never set it above normal when I want it on (which is usually when I'm flying a microlight).4) Water detail and reflections are off.... I fly mostly over land. More interesting than seeing the sun shining on the water.5) Number of lighting effects I leave at 1. This is most dramatic if you try out the new Simubuild A340 lighting effects kit. You need to raise the number to 8 to see it in it's glory, but the tradeoff is a fall in fps.I picked the 25fps lock, because I found that the most acceptable in terms of making my senses believe that the motion is fluid. If the fps fall below 20, I really begin to notice. If you run with many of the "Bells and whistles" turned on, lowering the fps lock to 25 or so may help make the drops in fps more acceptable to the senses.-John

I'm running close to what you are. If I had my preference, I'd like to see frame rates in the 40's & 50's like I get with CFS2 or the X-Plane demo. But in both those cases, the scenery usually isn't near as detailed, when the fps are that high.L.AdamsonAthlon 1900XPGeforce3Ti500512DDRram

Many thanks folks.I think I will lower some of the settings, auotgen for example and reduce the traffic AI. Seeting the FLS lock to 40 gives me 37-39 in level flight, so clearly the drops are at the major airfields with the AI traffic and autogen.Keith

Hi:My principle is: If 20FPS is enough to make you see it smooth, why lock it any higher? THe lower you lock it, the more that is left for FS to render autogen and other features. I lock to 30, which is still higher than I need, and never drop from 15, in which case it's still smooth. I don't get people who say "muhaha, I got 60FPS" because honestly, getting such high FPS has no sense, when the performance could be focused on getting better graphics. Then again, that's me. Each to his own.
