High altitude airfield

Recommended Posts

Hi,I'd like to know how to set up the aircraft for take off at high elevation airports. For example LHASA is at 11000ft. and, although the runway is longer than 11000 ft., I find difficult to get airborn.ThanksLorenzo

Use TOPCAT for all your performance calculations (T/O and LDG). You will see that it will require a balance- enough fuel for your destination may require a lower ZFW. Depending on what route you are flying, you may even need a fuel stop- pretty realistic huh? My mate Steve Bell and I love SEQU for the challenges that it provides. Try that sometime- after you look at the A340 overrun photos! http://topcat.ofplan.net/?page=mainBest-Carl F. Well, actually it's a nice tool indeed, but i get an error saying that the max allowable altitude is 8000 ft. I find hard to believe this considering that there are many higher fields.Anyway I have elaborated my own procedure which seems to work nicely.CheersLorenzo

Max T/O Ldg Pressure Alt for the 747-400 = 8,400' (2,560m) with GEs and 10000' for RR variants. That's PRESSURE ALT not MSL- maybe you ought to reconsider.....Best-Carl F. Hi Carl, thanks for clarification, I think I lack some experience in here: would you please explain me the difference between them? (Or point me to where I can gather info)?Thank youLorenzo

Thanks for all information, anyway no matter what I do the program won't give me clearance to take off from Lhasa. Also I can see the 747 equipped with RR and GE engines but not P&W. I personally use RR but it makes no difference. It is simply too high and hot.Lorenzo

Lhasa ICAO: ZULS has a elevation of 13,136 ft the 747-400 is certified for a max T/O and landing alt of 10000FT I'm pretty sure Bogota and Quito are the highest fields used for the 744 and then your still climb weight limited.Rob

I tried the take off again with the 20 degree flap setting. lifted off nicely, gear up, then I had to start flap retraction sorta quickly, if you know what i mean.

I make every T/O at Flaps 20- BA SOPs- utilize SPD INTV- makes correctly scheduled flap retraction a breeze.Best-Carl F. Although the weakness of the engines is simulated pretty well, I could leave LHASA even at max ZFW. The trick (for me) is not to use flaps at all (or at 1).This allows to build speed more rapidly, then, once airborn, gear-up and flaps 5. Slowly but constantly the airpseed will increase up to normal .But again I don't think this is possible in real world.Lorenzo

I'm surprised that works but it's a desktop sim after all. Less flaps increase your take off roll. A real world flaps up departure in a 744 at MTOW even at sea level would be front page news across the world due to gross incompetence of the crew. Also dont you get a Config Warning?Rob

Of course I get a config warning, it goes away after 80kts. And yes I admit it's completely out of head a thing like that. Anyway it's curious to see that in the sim you can do something similar...on one side I think that the dynamics of the "Queen" are perfect, but maybe there is some other limitations I don't know.Lorenzo
