Understanding flight path data - Live example

Recommended Posts

My cousin is currently flying from KATL to SBGR (Brazil). According to FlightAware, this is his route of travel:PNUTT5 MCN AMG J85 SUESS J85 TAY ORL PBI BR54V ZQA A555 DUKKY A756 ZIN A315 JOSES UA315 PJG UG446 MIQ UA315 UGRUL UA315 MAN UW9 SAMAR UW9 NILON UL795 PSNHow can I tell which of the above are waypoints, jet routes, and SIDs or STARs?Appreciate guidance, thanks!Jonathan

Jonathan,SIDS and STARS will be at the beginning and end of the flight plan.PNUTT5 is the SID in this case. If you look at the KATL airport info page on FlightAware you can bring up the chart for it.The airways are the stuff like J85, A756, A315 etc.You want to read these like this:PNUTT5 SIDdirect to MCNdirect to AMGAMG to TAY along J85 airway (don't know why J85 is in there twice)direct to ORLetc...It's basically read like what the VIA and TO columns in the FMC RTE pages are.Transitions on SIDs and STARs are normally shown with a period - so like BXK2.PKE is the KPHX Buckeye 2 departure, Parker transition.I actually prefer the period method of writing routes - two periods indicates a direct routing and a single period indicates a connection, so something like this:KTUS.BURRO2.CIE..SSO.J104.ONM..ALS.LARKS5So there's direct routings (not via an airway) between CIE and SSO, and between ONM and ALS.If this is the full flight plan then there is no SID, it's just the PSN VOR and then into the airport via ATC vectors.
